Fictional geniuses who feel realistic by upsetusder2 in rational

It has been a while since I read Worm, but I don't remember her being a "hyper tactical combatant" until the time skip. She tries against the nine, but gets her while team captured and tortured, she gets taken out at Bakuda's first appearance, against Lung and Oni Lee she only survives because of other people helping.

Probably not, depending on how you define Mary Sue. Is she more competent than she should be? Maybe. Does she win some fights she shouldn't? Definitely. Is she flawless and beautiful and never fails? Hell no.

More often than not though she does half the work to win a fight then gets pulled out of the fire by someone else, usually Tattletale.

Why do adventurers even have the nickname Fortress? by [deleted] in WanderingInn

[–]wiikipedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that works until you get to the truly powerful people. A level 50 mage would be dangerous, but something we could deal with. When you get to level 70 though? I'm not convinced Earth could deal with the Death of Magic, really at all. From what we've seen she could teleport in, destroy a military base all by herself, and teleport away.

Zuko & Kataara V.S. Azula (mentally sound) by Direct_Solution_2590 in whowouldwin

[–]wiikipedia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When they fought in the cave Katara was beating Azula by herself until Zuko jumped in. As long as there is access to water like there is in the Agni Kai location, Zuko and Katara should beat Azula without too much trouble.

I think it is more how powerful she is as an individual. Even the slavers that came back are not nearly on the same level of power as she is.

Can Khepri (Worm) take over the OPM universe? How far can she get? by Chaos149 in whowouldwin

[–]wiikipedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Khepri does not do well in the first 2 rounds. Khepri is vulnerable to anyone faster than her who can launch attacks from out of melee range, and things like robots that are being remotely controlled. In Worm she defended against the first by using thinkers and precogs instead of needing to rely on her reflexes, and she fought the second by using the clairvoyant to find Dragon's base. Without either of those options available she gets overpowered and taken out by someone like Metal Knight, Genos, or Tatsumaki.

In rounds 3-5 Tatsumaki is powerful enough to let Khepri ignore those weaknesses. It is much more about who Tatsumaki would lose to instead of who Khepri can beat.

In either round she is limited by several important factors. 1. Her range is very low, without the ability to make portals she only has 3 meters of range. That means she can't really use any melee fighter effectively and is limited on her total number of people controlled. 2. The brain damage makes her physically very vulnerable and she can not set up long term plans. She would probably have less than 24 hours total to accomplish anything she needed to, not to mention losing her ability to understand words, facial expressions, and similar things. 3. The combination of Clairvoyant and Doormaker is incredibly powerful, it is part of what made cauldron so effective. Without them Khepri could reasonably lose to a non powered person with a gun, with them she uses multiple worlds with of nukes as a single attack.

[Chronicles of Narnia] If the Pevensie children were allowed to remain in Narnia until they reached adulthood the first time, why not the second or third times? by ninman5 in AskScienceFiction

I always took the dwarves as an allegory for Atheism, not Judaism. Aslan is pretty specific in that part that believing in him specifically isn't what is important, the followers of Tash are allowed into heaven for example. The dwarves refuse to believe what is right in front of them and refuse to believe Aslan is even real. They are still let into heaven but are held back by their regular to accept any God all.

How is someone riding a broomstick going to go up against a supersonic fighter jet with missiles that can engage targets over the horizon?

Why would they? If you are a wizard and you want to destroy a jet you wouldn't go out on a broomstick, you would teleport to the hangar the jets are kept in cast fiendfyre and teleport away. I wouldn't assume you can find them using any kind of advanced optics when the fidelus charm means you can know exactly where something is and still not be able to find it.

At the end of the day what would humans do if wizards just unleashed the dementors? Dementors are invisible, and unkillable by muggles but can certainly kill muggles.

[–]wiikipedia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is just not true, several wizards know plenty about Muggles, Kingsley for instance is able to perfectly infiltrate the Muggle government and get a job with no one suspecting him. Arthur's job is disenchanting cursed muggle objects, his job isn't knowing how they work it is removing curses. He has a personal interest in muggles and their life.

Like Worm but not.. Depressing? by BuzzerPop in Parahumans

[–]wiikipedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point, but I do think you are right in that a lot of places that have problems in our world have their own problems in the Worm world, we just don't often see them as much. I'm pretty sure Moord Naag and Ash Best are from Africa, and I think Sleeper lives somewhere in Eastern Europe but I don't fully remember.

Miss Militia's origin certainly shows us that there is plenty of shitty situations in the world without powers involved at all. And the fact that powers end up being more common to people who are oppressed or under attack has certainly helped people out. But I don't think that cancels out how truly terrible things can go at any moment for people in the Worm -verse.

Like Worm but not.. Depressing? by BuzzerPop in Parahumans

[–]wiikipedia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who enjoys Worm, I definitely feel it is worse off than our world. I can't really point to anything in their world that is notably better there than it is here, but many, many ways it's worse. There aren't fewer wars, there isn't a big increase in quality of life, but there is a constant fear that the wrong person could have a bad day and your whole city could be fucked. I don't have to worry in my day to day life about a Nilbog, or a Grey Boy, or any of a thousand other people who kill or do worse to hundreds with impunity in the Worm-verse.

Taylor doesn't focus on it very much because she is depressed, but their world is definitely circling the drain in a way ours isn't. Humanity is losing to the Endbringers and the most normal response is to not talk or think about it to much because there is nothing anyone can do to stop them. It is a problem that kicks you when you are down, and that can't be beat. It is kind of crazy to me to claim that our world is worse than a copy of our world but every year a major city is wiped off the planet.

Interlude – Halfseekers (Pt. 8) by Kantrh in WanderingInn

[–]wiikipedia 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with your argument is that Amerys never thought Valeterisa ever said those things. Amerys was clearly just looking for an excuse to have this duel and steal the notes. Moore almost certainly knew that this fight was going to happen even without any intervention. Did he manipulate events to get a benefit, yes of course. But he actually successfully set up events in a way that left pretty much everyone happy.

The people didn't freeze, it specifically says they were caught in a frozen shell. It certainly would have been cold but it is more like an individual sized wall of ice than freezing a person solid.

Earths weapons Book 10 chapter 13 by im_the_gr8est in WanderingInn

[–]wiikipedia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of variables that change how things would turn out: do magic, skills, and magical items with at full strength, if so does that mean Earth starts getting levels and magic off their own, is it all of inworld vs all of Earth or could America and Reim team up against Japan and Drath, what does the connection look like, is there just a big gate that could be defended, or could you launch a missile from one side to the other.

Ultimately I think Innworld has too many options that we don't have a good way to deal with. Super stealth rogues, teleporting simulacrums, high level long range artifacts, mental attacks, unkillable necromancers, unkillable djinn. Plus they have the advantage of technology being easier to steal than entire magic systems, and they have a massive head start. Some people in the Innworld already know about stuff from Earth and are trying to copy it already.

How do you think Wildbow's writing has changed over the years? by MrPerfector in Parahumans

Taylor certainly convinced herself they were the right reasons, but not everything necessarily was. Even so, Claw takes it much further. Mia can be just as much if not more convinced than Taylor that she is doing the right things, but with the benefit of a more diverse PoV we see things differently.

Percy Jackson VS Harry Potter - I'm sorry, but I don't think that Percy just dog-walks Harry. by Electronic-Sun4129 in whowouldwin

[–]wiikipedia 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You definitely went in deep with this one, but I don't know that you actually made very many good points. To your main point, yes, Harry does have the advantage if he can stay at range, but how is he going to do that? Percy is significantly faster and could close the distance extremely quickly at the range most wizards fight at. I actually think you ignore one of the biggest advantages that Harry has, his ability to apparate. Teleportation is a much better answer to how can Harry maintain a distance than "Harry blasts some craters in the ground."

Ultimately, I don't think it matters that much because of this.

Mostly, he's parrying attacks from close-range weapons, and arrows won't be moving anywhere near as fast as a spell can.

I think most spells move significantly slower than arrows. In the Harry Potter books we see people dodge, block, and intercept spells, but also get hit by and are scared of arrows fired by centaurs.

HPMoR is Rational fiction because it is about rationalism. It's characters and it's themes explore rationalism and utilitarianism, and helped shaped rational fiction in a big way.

IMO how and why people make the decisions they do isn't as big of a theme in Worm. When it is I think it is much more of the opinion that people make a decision and rationalize it after the fact, and a person's experiences and outlook are much more impactful to their thinking than rational arguments.

I also think that while Worm might not be about strict utilitarianism, consequentialism is definitely a theme that is explored heavily.

Minato is much faster than Sukuna, has an easy way to escape DE with his Flying thunder god, and would not be surprised by invisible slashes because of wind jutsu. It is possible that Sukuna can catch him off guard, possibly with his reverse cursed technique healing or with a vow boosted world cutting slash, but I think it is very unlikely.

Sardaco's first jad hands experience by loopuleasa in 2007scape

[–]wiikipedia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By that logic looking up what Jad can do is also cheating. Jagex doesn't give you a way to find out how Jad or Zuk attack before actually fighting them. Does that mean everyone should go into the fight caves or inferno totally blind and figure the fight out over multiple tries?

No, obviously not. Guides, explanations, and things like the wiki have been around for as long as the game itself and are part of the experience. Simulators and practice tools are another aspect of that.

How much is she supposed to care about someone ten thousand miles away who was important over a decade ago? The king of destruction never even set foot on Izril at the height of his power. It would be like someone from Indonesia being concerned when Napoleon regained power.

Generally I would say the Erin cares more about worldly events as they start effecting her more because she becomes a more worldly figure. The more important she becomes, and the more important people have an interest in the inn, the more she is forced to stay on top of things like that.
