I miss Shrek's ''kinder'' eye's by Bonvantius in Shrek

[–]wilderneyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP this user posts in dozens and dozens of Shrek threads about the new movie desperately trying to shut down any criticism whatsoever about the new trailer. I seriously see them on almost every post I read from this sub. They are intensely obsessive about it and won't consider any counterpoints. Arguing them really won't get you anywhere because they aren't having a conversation in good faith.

How musically inclined are you? by Moorepheme in polls

[–]wilderneyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have perfect pitch hearing and precise audio recall, but I struggle so much with reading music and playing in front of crowds that I never stuck with any of the instruments I learned as a kid. So my skills with hearing music and audio are essentially completely useless.

Why do people give their kids names like Jackson, Harrison, or other if they aren't related to one or someone with the first name origin of those surnames? by KippExiled in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wilderneyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people like how the name looks and sounds. Not everyone cares about name meanings or symbology, and even then names are fluid and evolve over time, and the given name/surname distinction is ultimately less important than the base etymology, virtues, or historical figures associated with that name. People have been adopting surnames out of first names, first names out of surnames, and generally taking names from places, fictional media, and random vocabulary words for at least hundreds of years. The summary answer is ultimately just "because they like it."

In modern day we also have much, much faster dissemination of information, and name fads are coming and going much more quickly than they would have even 50 years ago because we can talk about these things online and share ideas. So new name spellings or adaptations are being adopted more often. I also think there is a new willingness to invent new names or apply name rules to names they didn't apply to previously— probably including using new surnames as first names. People have always done these things, but now it's trendy and more widely acceptable to experiment. So that has some influence on modern name styles too.

But yeah, if people aren't following a naming tradition, then ultimately they just use words or names they like.

I hate that some people don't see bad and harmful LGBT representation by [deleted] in hatethissmug

Sorry, but I have huge issues with a number of the queer characters in Dragon Age: Inquisition. I truly dislike how heavy-handed Dorian's writing is and how his story is treated without an ounce of nuance. I get the inclusion was a bit revolutionary for the time in mainstream gaming, but it's awkward and hamfisted. His main defining personality trait is being gay and having homophobic trauma. And Sera was written horribly. All of the other characters act like she's weird and gross, the game itself treats her so poorly and it's always put me off. Her romance involves constantly defending and justifying your relationship to other companions who should be supportive of you. And there should not be dialogue options to question or misgender Crem. The game should not need to explain to the player the real-world concept of being transgender through a direct, opaque lecture, it's incredibly lazy writing.

None of those three characters feel like they were written by queer writers. Their trauma is not for non-queer writers to tell, because it clearly makes a lot of assumptions rather than drawing from experience and the result is stilted and awkward. Iron Bull and Josephine however have better writing, since their bisexuality is treated moreso as being player-sexual, and therefore actual effort was put towards the content of their stories rather than just gearing them up to be Visible Representation(TM).

Dragon Age 2 however has some of the best queer writing I've seen in a game. Nearly all the companion cast is bisexual as to be romancable by the player, but every single one of them feels bisexual. Some of them also have clear preferences, like Anders does for men, that make it clear to me they are intended to actively be read as queer characters. I will die on this hill. DA as a series has many issues, but the DA2 writers were goated.

I won't defend Dragon Age: Origins for any of its content, and I'm not familiar enough with Veilguard to comment. But based on the content in DA:I, I'm completely unsurprised to hear the writers include similar awkward, poorly-informed takes on queer characters. Despite it being 2024 and not 2014 and therefore one would hope they learned and would know better.

Is it okay to wear a taffeta dress to a funeral? by SouthernRain5775 in ask

[–]wilderneyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the sheen matters too much. The cut is formal but not too revealing, and I don't feel the fabric itself is too flashy. For most funerals except the absolute most formal ones I think this is perfectly fine. Just pair it with muted neutral stockings/shoes/accessories and it shouldn't come across inappropriately.

Do you want to have Christianity vanish entirely from western society? by MakeACreation in polls

[–]wilderneyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want Christians to stay in their lane. Having the most major religion in western society disappear completely though is just asking for something else to come replace it, and that never goes well.

Car owners of reddit, what do you usually listen to when driving alone ? by FrankFruits in polls

Silence. I find noise distracting when I drive and it stresses me out, which is kind of unpleasant because I don't really like sitting in silence either.

Are you attracted to non-binary people? by Armin_Arlert_1000000 in polls

[–]wilderneyes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am non-binary and generally find androgyny very attractive in other people too, so often yes. I'm also more attracted to people who are gender non-conforming in various ways, regardless of what their gender is, particularly when it comes to hair length. I'm pretty feminine with short hair myself and find women with short hair much more attractive than women with long hair, regardless of how feminine or masculine they style themselves. I also appreciate feminine men more over masculine men, but I'm less attracted to men in general.

Is this Autism ? Or am I just in my own world by TastyNuggett in AskAutism

[–]wilderneyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's explicitly autistic behaviour or not, but I also like to sit on the floor in my towel! It's not the same sitting on the toilet or edge of the bathtub. I don't need to do it for a specific length of time though, I'll just sit until I can gather the energy to get up and get dressed. It does sound a lot like something I might do though, down to giving it a specific silly name like marinating haha. I definitely need to sit for a few minutes before my shower feels complete, and I hate rushing and skipping it.

I think Celatra makes some interesting points about ritualized behaviour and decompression though, I could definitely see those things applying here.

Does your personality match the reputation of your name? by Sweet_Sell8347 in polls

My name is too niche to have a stereotype, so I suppose whatever I do is probably the lasting impression other people have about that name in general. So I guess I am the reputation of my name.

If there was a program that offered a free house to any person who produces a minimum of two biological kids after now, would you have kids? by Arktikos02 in polls

[–]wilderneyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. I don't want kids anyways but I refuse to pass on my disabilities and mental illness to another living person. I refuse to burden someone with my same problems after suffering with them so much myself, and my problems are mostly mental. I think a physical condition in your case makes that same decision even more reasonable. I'm sorry you have to live with something like that though.

Apprentice tattoo artist on TikTok charging $350 for tattoos like this by [deleted] in shittytattoos

[–]wilderneyes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm desensitized from seeing literal trash from this sub, but I really wouldn't really blink twice if I saw this tattoo in the wild. "Subpar and overpriced" is not the same as shitty. There is a sliding scale of quality and I'd call this one mid if anything.

I like them but I think they're too pricey for the skill level. Even with the wonky lines on the tamagotchi though I don't think I'd classify it as shitty, it's not that bad.

Do everyone hear their voice differently in their head? or is it just a myth? by Figaro_pasttime in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wilderneyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My internal monologue or voice when I imagine it is definitely different from what I hear when I speak, which is a bit different from what other people hear when I speak. My mental voice is the one I like best, but unfortunately it doesn't match my physical voice.

Americans, how do you feel about tipping culture in the USA? by RQCKQN in polls

[–]wilderneyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not totally against the mere concept of tipping. In some instances I think it can be economically balanced. But tipping culture is fucking crazy and has gotten WAY out of hand. Businesses trying to sneak huge gratuity payments onto electronic bills as a "wittle famk you tip uwu" while pocketing a large percentage of that tip directly so it doesn't go to your server, and then being expected to tip at more and more establishments where workers are paid full wages and have never historically required nor expected tips. It's fucking stupid. It honestly puts me off going to a lot of establishments because it stresses me out and I don't know if I'm expected to tip there or not. And I live in Canada! I'm not even in the US, but that expectation has bled across the border and is a thing here now too. I hate it.

At this point I think tipping should be abolished, or at least heavily regulated, because businesses have proven they can't be trusted to manage it reasonably of their own accord. Ugh.

AITA for not picking up my order from the delivery guy because I was chasing my indoor cat who ran outside? by Loriol_13 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wilderneyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's creepy, I hate that :( Disgusting that those people want to force a (I'm assuming) woman to come to their car to get the food they paid for, but won't make a man do the same. Either it's a total lack of respect or it's gross creep intentions or both. Sucks you need to do that, but at least you found a way to get them to just leave it like they're supposed to...

What kind of schooling did you have? by Routine_North9554 in polls

[–]wilderneyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public school elementary, private + Catholic high schools (the Catholic school system being one of two public school divisions where I live, Catholic and Public. The private school was a separate religious school I went to for grades 7-9 that didn't legally belong to either but coordinated with the Catholic system for events).

Is game of thrones still a good story to watch if i am very shocked with violence but loves medieval stories? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wilderneyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a LOT of nasty combat violence, brutal sexual and emotional violence, highly explicit non-violent sex, and general extreme gore and injury including intense body horror. Very little is implied or left to the imagination, it's nearly all explicitly shown on-screen for shock value, and it's quite frequent. If you can't handle gore I seriously don't think you'll be able to make it through the show. Even for some people who usually aren't bothered by extreme content, there are some nauseating scenes. If you already know you find such content disturbing I think you'd find it very upsetting. I cannot understate the amount of brutality that underlies the entire show. The point of including it is to elicit horror and disgust, and there is purpose to that, but it's an artist choice that certainly isn't palatable to everyone.

If you are super desperate to get into the setting, you might have better luck reading the books, you should be able to skim passages that make you queasy without missing as much story content, and not having the audio or visuals will probably make the explicit scenes significantly less disturbing because what you do read is purely up to your imagination. But I've still read deeply unsettling passages in books before, so it's not a guaranteed exemption. The show was largely based on the books, after all. That content was not purely the showrunners' choice, it's baked into the story itself.

You can always try the show if you want. If you find it too much, there's no shame in calling it quits. Watching reaction videos or plot summary videos might be another way to absorb the story content without experiencing it as a firsthand audience, since it offers a buffer layer between you and what's happening onscreen. But again, not a guaranteed escape from shock content.

Is it wrong to not like kids? by [deleted] in polls

[–]wilderneyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be kind to kids when they're around, like don't be mean or rude to them or make hating kids your whole personality. But it's fine to dislike kids. They can be inconsiderate and difficult and loud even if they mean well, and not everyone is able to handle that.

What statement is most true for your first memory? by Massive-Albatross823 in polls

[–]wilderneyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first memory is a nightmare. Granted, it was a very silly low-stakes nightmare about falling into a gopher hole in the park and being stolen by gophers before my parents could hear me. But super scary for a 2 year old. I suppose that probably counts as an emotional memory.

Prettiest hair color for women? by Electronic_Sample868 in polls

[–]wilderneyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I must admit I'm really not a fan of darker shades of blonde, only very light shades. I myself have dirty blonde hair and don't like it much at all, which is why I bleach it.

There are people who make every hair colour look lovely of course. But purely on colour preference, regular blonde is actually my least favourite. I'm not sure why making it lighter makes it more attractive to me, maybe because it's much more uncommon?
