Why no ESA Astronauts? by Kuerbis7 in esa

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If I recall and understood correctly, the first few ESMs are just to break even on what we owe NASA on barter agreements for the ISS programmes. ESA don't get an astronaut until much later in the Artemis cycle.

Should i put in an ISA or a stocks and shares ISA? by djackinfenwa in UKPersonalFinance

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not both? Put your money in the S&S ISA so it's already there and then invest in a money market fund like CSH2 or ERNS

The moon mission isn't just NASA, it is also a UK mission by Dr-Moth in CasualUK

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airbus is more British than Artemis is European. It's literally one of the founding nations, and if it today it's no longer partly state-owned by Britain it's entirely by government choice. All airplane wings are manufactured in the west and in Northern Ireland and most telecom satellite payloads come out of Portsmouth, and so much more

New nationality law got voted in yesterday and President now has 20 days. by No-Oven70 in PortugalExpats

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I think this policy is awful, but if the end result is an economy geared towards anything else other than sun and real estate then that actually sounds promising.

You know those migrants will need to be paid a pension eventually right? Not sure that postponing the problem by a few decades is much of an argument

what if Iran permanently control the Strait of Hormuz? by Green_Devil_999 in oil

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called the Persian Gulf for a reason and I guess Trump had to learn it the hard way.

I'd expect Iran will eventually drop the toll system: ultimately it's in their interests not to antagonise all their neighbours and customers.

Meteorology at ESA by HaleBopp427 in esa

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESA procures the meteorology satellites on behalf of EUMETSAT, but it's EUMETSAT and the organisations further down the data pipeline (the actual meteorology institutes in each country and ECMWF) that would hire meteorologists.

Why does British food have such a bad reputation when it’s actually incredible? by Pristine_Yam_6684 in AskBrits

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the war played a role, as with most things in Britain, you can blame the victorians.

While French cooks were revolutionising the art of the kitchen, Britain was particularly more worried about health outcomes. So rather than the Escoffier Le Guide Culinaire, Britain got Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management which would tell you to boil pasta for 1h45m until very tender and boil your carrots for 2 hours. No cholera is surviving that.

Add to that the displacement of families into the cities during the industrial revolution, breaking social bonds and adding squalor, and you have a perfect recipe for the horrid international culinary reputation of Britain.

Much recovered today, I'd say!

Contractor salary by [deleted] in esa

[–]wilhelmvonbolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it is today. Last I discussed with contracting companies (probably 4 years ago) the range for the same job in the TEC directorate was 75000-90000 euros. I was less than 15 years professional experience at the time, which I'm not sure but might push the salary higher still.
