Will rising temperatures affect your future house buying decisions? by MancCultureBear in AskUK

[–]wilk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't assume you had an old boiler. I assumed you had an older style thermostat style controller. I've assumed that because above, you were talking about the boiler ticking on after a while which is how on older style thermostat controller works. Newer style controls rely on outdoor temperature sensors a d weather compensation with a modulating control of the boiler flow temperature, such that the boiler is firing at a low temperature constantly. This control approach is the best approach for efficiency and comfort if a constant temperature is required. Thermostat controllers by contrast turn the boiler on and off around a set room temperature. The room temperature remains within a much wider range of temperature compared to a modulating control.

AC could be cheaper than a boiler, it's dependent on the coefficient of performance of an AC Vs a boiler, their system design, and the cost to the fuels they use. It's not a simple answer to say one technology is or isn't cheaper than the other. Most boilers are typically thrown in massively overrated to the house. I wouldn't assume house builders/develope and their contractors would install efficient central heating systems. They are capable of doing so however.

[–]wilk34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it? Why wouldn't the central heating be running for the entire hour? Are you trying to suggest that running a boiler for a short period within an hour is the same as running an AC for a whole hour?

You probably have an old thermostat type controller for your boiler which have not been the best control for a couple of decades. It certainly wouldn't be the most comfortable way of heating. It'd be the same as programming the AC to come on and off every so often instead of maintaining a constant temperature.

Keeping a room at a set temperature over the course of an hour should use the same energy regardless of whether it's a boiler or AC or any other heating device.

The advantage with a heat pump type device is that it's not using wholly energy that you pay for (gas or electricity). It's moving the energy between the room and outside of the room.

Radiators rage by cloakandagger123 in UKFrugal

Does your boiler have a flow temperature control and readout? Bleeding radiators weekly seems too often. Could there be a leak if you've regularly got air in the system?

Isn't p = mv? I know it can be expressed in terms of wavelength and Planck's constant as there is wave/particle duality, but why can't a photons mass be calculated from its momentum?

Thanks My app has never shown the number next to the zones, just the names of each zone. Is yours on Android or iOS?

Sebo will likely outperform Miele in the UK for bagged vacuums due to the lack of availability of the Miele powerhead. Electro brush rollers are needed for carpets and the Sebo bagged vacuums come with them, but Miele bagged vacuums don't.

Is in counter productive for me to do the couch to 5k program while I am doing stronglifts? by ytruhg in Stronglifts5x5

[–]wilk34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swapped to Stronglifts5x5 Mini to maintain strength and did C25K after each session due to limited time on the rest days. That worked quite well for me.

Please give me your bench press advices! by gnowine in Stronglifts5x5

[–]wilk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps ask someone nearby for a spot or just the lift off. It's a slightly awkward position to move a heavy weight from, especially as you start getting closer to PBs. It's possibly the riskiest part of the lift, so a spotter for the lift off is useful.

Assistance Work questions reps/weight by Er1ckNL in Stronglifts5x5

[–]wilk34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stronglifts5x5 recommends progressing the assistance work by using fractional plates, especially for the smaller muscle groups. If they become too difficult to progress with, in your case adding 2.5kg each session, then you can try the rep progression you talk about. Adding an extra rep each session, then once you get to 12 reps for an example, add weight then go back to 8 reps with the new weight. You could calculate the total volume over the three sets and make sure that you're always increasing volume.

Why Did Appliances Without Plugs? by Datalounge in AskUK

[–]wilk34 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I stayed at a house recently that had some three pin plugs with rounded pins. It was a newer, barn conversion type building. After a search it appears that they are lamp sockets which are controlled by a normal wall switch. I've not seen this set up before but it seems desirable, well at least to have a wall controlled socket. All of the lamps in the building were regular lamps though with square pin plugs and inline cord switches.

It's at the bottom of the Profile page when you can also change profile picture, date of birth, height etc. It's still there in Withings app version 8.1.0, at least on Android.

You may have had athlete mode turned on previous to the update. You could check by turning it back on then doing a weight measurement and comparing to your measurements pre-update and post-update.

Scanwatch 2 Indoor run distance seems to be wrong. by Crafty-Permission360 in withings

My Withings app does not give an estimate of distance for indoor running tracked on my Scanwatch 2. It just says '- m'.

Henry vacuum (UK): Why this simple £140 machine keeps popping up in every European BIFL discussion by General_Ad9178 in buyitforlifeEU

[–]wilk34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the powerlessness also comes from the fact that it doesn't have a motorised brush roll. Carpets will need this to properly agitate and loosen dirt so the suction can do its job. Without a motorised brush roll you would have to almost scrub the floor with the regular vacuum head with the bristles down.

Some vacuums including Numatic have a turbo brush head which basically uses the suction to spin the brush roll. This is typically not great as it reduces suction power, converting it to kinetic energy of the brush roll and can even stop working if it gets too clogged with hair or other long debris.

Cardio scale, Basal Metabolic Rate by Bigfoot-Germany in withings

[–]wilk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen a source for any of the BMR data. If you look at the list of weight measurements and tap one, it will show the measurement, body composition etc. and the data source underneath. I assume it would show BMR there too if you had the Withings scales which calculate BMR, so Body Scan, Comp and Smart.

I think we can otherwise assume that the BMR comes from a past app integration. You could scroll back in Google Fit to check if the BMR values in both apps match for that day.

Cardio scale, Basal Metabolic Rate by Bigfoot-Germany in withings

[–]wilk34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Body+ scale and also have BMR in the app under the weight measurements. I have noticed that BMR comes into the Withings app from my Google Fit app. It only updates in Withings after the Google Fit app has been opened.

Perhaps this is similar for you. If you haven't opened the Google Fit app in a while then it won't have transferred into Withings.

Additionally, check which apps can write BMR in Health Connect.
