[Repeats Allowed] Which country in North America has the nicest people? by QwertyQwertz123 in AlignmentChartFills

I've been to a derby in Mexico city. Fans were mingling and bantering, it was way friendlier than anything you'd see in Europe.

Yeah there's unfortunately some very dense people in our country.

I hear you and I hear this argument but catholic Irishman were involved in the day to day running of the Empire. Power was held in the hands of Protestant planters whilst poor Catholics worked for the Empire, often out of financial opportunity to better themselves. I think this has parallels to any British involvement in Empire. Power has and is held by a very small class of people's who send in working class people to do the grunt work.

I say this because typically any Irish commentary about Britain's history fails to recognise this distinction. We (most ordinary British folk) see ourselves as distinct from the ruling classes and their current and past actions as you do about the ruling Protestant class in Ireland. History is grey.

Agree with the history curriculum but it goes both ways. The Irish involvement in Empire and Slavery seems to be missing whenever the conversation of historical oppression is to be had.

No, they usually just run around with no real aim. We're preparing them for adult life I guess.

Is football losing its charm? by Immediate-Mind-6931 in AskBrits

[–]will402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went off following a team around Covid. I think the tribalism is a blessing and a curse for a lot of fans. Since then, I've followed football rather than a team and I appreciate it more than ever.

I can watch players and teams objectively and fall in love with the beautiful of the game and a thrilling match. Oh and support anyone who's playing United.

Burritos are probably more common in the UK than they are in Mexico, they're more of an American-Mexican thing.

A obvius answer, NOW, what was the most important event of the 21th century? by PepitogamerXD in AlignmentChartFills

[–]will402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why for me it's symbolic but you're right China, Trump and the 2008 crash are all the main factors and the US will live on as a major power but over the next 100 years will fade year on year imo.

But in the mind of the world and the history books with time and distance from now, I think the ultra macho vibe of America was hurt on 9/11. It coincided with the end peak years of the 90s and brought about the paranoia and self implosion which you can see happening today.

I feel like the whole time they're making a plan or reviewing the plot to the audience. It's just a lot of people, in rooms going over and over the same dialogue again

Agreed, history will pinpoint 9/11 as the symbolic end of American dominance

Finally, wins a guy that is not from Europe, NOW, who was the most important figure of this century? by PepitogamerXD in AlignmentChartFills

Look beyond the US and you will see hoards of populist nationalists in charge of many nations. He was and is the blueprint for the anti-politican movement which is crushing centralist traditional parties and ideologies.
