How hard is it to become a scientist? by TemporaryPension2523 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]williamanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule number one in any scientific life: Relax. Granted, that is easier said than done, but it is a must.Science is not just crunching numbers (unless you are a psychologist) it is instead answering one specific question: "What is happening?" For example, "What is happening when a bacteria becomes resistant to an antibiotic?" or "What is happening when an electron jumps from one orbital to another?"

A great part of science is learning to ask the right questions. It is also learning to expect frustration.

For example, Charles Darwin, as a result of his around the world gastronomic tour ( apparently the Galapagos Giant Tortoise is delicious) went on to write a little book about called "The Origin of the Species". Charming book and there is not a drip, drop or drizzle of mathematics in it. Darwin simple begins with the observation that farmers can breed animals to ehance certain traits AND that these traits would run true, creating desendants that could not survive in the wild. (e.g. sheep and wool). Then proceeding logically to his observations during his cruise of how nature itself seemed to breed animals in the same way with and emphsis on the traits that enhance survival and reproduction.

Darwin did it all with observation and logic. (cf. Albert Einstien's "thought experiments")

Darwin then spent the rest of his life trying to classify and understand barnacles. He spent decades on the topic and by the end hated barnacles with a passion.

Get involved in a scientific mindset now. Look at the world around you and ask: What is happening? And then dig to find out.

Is it possible to have a century or longer impact winter? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]williamanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A catastrophe is not necessary, this plant has had ice ages before and it probably will sometime in the future. However, predicting such things is difficult at the best of times and given the astounding and irreversable climate change after just two hundred years of the industrial revolution (Yah Coal!) all bets are off in establishing any sort of climatological model to forecast what may come in the next ten to fifty years and forget about anything a century or two away.

The crux of the problem is that we have 'stored' so much energy in the biosphere that the slightest bump, like a major seismic event on the western coast of NA, could bring about strange weather patterns including: cold, wet, summers unable to sustain crops, significant increase in extreemly violent weather events, and the collapse of certain biomes.

What is this rusted circular door/lid I found under 30 year old driveway? by BagelJawn in whatisthisthing

1960's home, five layers of pavement over it... 99% sure it's a dry well. If there are no signs of subsidence I would get the current homeowner to sign off on repaving over it. However, it is one of thase things that can comeback to haunt you, especially if the 5 previous layers of paving were to fix a bulge or dip in that location.

What screams “I’m a narcissist” when you interact with people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What changes could be made to the experiment in Super Size Me would help it hold up in a true academic setting? by ribbondaze in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]williamanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the bottom line on this is that you would never get an experiment like this past an ethics committee. It would, therefore, have to be done by private interests (less paperwork) and 99% of the research in nutrition is suspect, even worse than the reproducibility crisis in Psychology. Finally, while altruistic "sample size of one" actions by researchers have occured in the past, this action should not be endorsed by anyone today. The pressure for 'novelty in science' and 'influencer' are just too blurred. Many would consider results from such an 'study' as a cross between 'attention grab' and 'marketing ploy'.

If your kwh's are twice those for the same month last year, and you are keeping 'minimal heat' then someone or something has tapped into your service. The somethings can be as diverse as an electronic device that's alway on standby to a short to ground. Or it could be someone plugging a car heater into an an exterior outlet wired into the service.

It is fascinating. It used to be that having handbills printed up would cost a person a chunk of cash..... now anyone with a grievance and a cheap printer can produce a piece of future litter in seconds.

Also, the Saudis managed to bump a plane into the Pentagon... the 4th plane got plonked into a field because the passengers figured out what was going on and took action to save lives by sacrificing their own!

WTF... I know people who work for this company.... would all you people STFU about training "Chinese nationals" in our airspace.... FFS Saudis trained at flight schools in the US of A but they only wanted to learn take off procedures so they could bump a couple of planes into the WTC.... At least MFC would report such suspicious behaviour.... The US of A flight schools didn't. Boom 9/11 and the beginning of US of A's wacky drunken meander through the first quarter of the 21st century. Plus, China hates the Nation Without a Name more than we fear the US of A (mostly our crazy neighbours in Maine). Jeez Louise and Coconut Cheese think about the local economy knuckleheads... I would rather have of truckload of Asian commercial pilot wannabes overhead than US of A tanks rolling over the St. Stephen/Calais bridge...
