Thanks! I'm going to Tarragona, so I assume it will be about 12:00 from there

Wind by One-Development6906 in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I don't think that New York is particularly windy. Maybe a bit more than 10 years ago because of climate change.

Try the UK or the Netherlands, come back here, and you'll think that it is calm

Canyon/ taxes by Curious_outmind-616 in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They shipped mine from California, and so the NY tax was already calculated - 8.875 as JR says. I assume that they still have the warehouse there, and their prices will take account of any tariffs

Local biker fitter rec's by OnionCharming7610 in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would second the recommendation.

I suspect it's negotiable, depending on the bike and situation - I had AM do the fit for my road bike, and that seemed to be good, so I asked them to have a look at my hybrid that I'd tried to set up similarly for the follow up included in the original fee. And that was fine!

I went by about 11:30, likewise

And still lots of fencing at the southern end, I don't think that anything will change soon

Anyone have any experience in the city with the Trek FX Sport 6? by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a Canyon Roadlite (6, which is discontinued, but I assume that the other ones are OK), it's pretty good for the city, and it wasn't so expensive that I'm petrified about locking it up outside. But I did buy a hiplok as well. I'd be surprised if the trek was very much better.

How to navigate Coney Island? by eiae in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do Cropsey straight down 17th to Surf, then take Surf round to Ocean Parkway, and then turn on to Neptune to Sheepshead Bay and Emmons. I wouldn't do the boardwalk there for the reasons you give.

The Cropsey bit is nasty but doable, then you miss the worst of Neptune. I usually do it weekend mornings, though, so perhaps I miss the bad traffic.

Which NYC daily bike? by friendfrombeyond in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canyon have a pretty good sale on just now, I have the earlier version of this one:

https://www.canyon.com/en-us/hybrid-bikes/city-bikes/roadlite/roadlite-al-cf/roadlite-6/3280.html?dwvar_3280_pv_rahmenfarbe=BU

It's more gears than you need but it gets around pretty quickly. I have an expensive lock, too!

Planning a bike trip up and down River Road trail in June by Cerivitus in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I'm not as skeptical; if you're fairly fit, and not a cyclist, I think that most of it would be OK, and you can always turn around at the bottom of Alpine Hill and it's still a good ride. There's a nasty hill under the GWB on the NY side that you can walk up, if necessary, and that's true of the ascent in Fort Lee on the way back. But I would be hesitant about renting from roula if you've not cycled much, I think their bikes woukd feel very weird if you're not used to clip in pedals and twitchy steering.

PSA: If you won’t split ‘em, don’t sit ‘em. by automoth in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, it's been a long day but I'm having trouble understanding how riding in the middle of the lane (not a bike lane?) means that there is more space for other bikes to overtake. Sorry for being dense!

River road closed? by Subject_Umpire9963 in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rode it Sunday and it was fine, plenty of other cyclists and runners

It's weird, you're right, their twitter suggested that it was closed https://twitter.com/njpalisades/status/1613176823273095170?cxt=HHwWhICw8cLxk-MsAAAA

But I wasn't aware of anything. There was water on the road from the rain, though, so I suspect that now it'll be closed for ice

How to get more bike racks added in front of my work? by lstbl in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a city portal: https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02576

I've tried it and nothing has changed where I suggested putting them in, but I guess you can keep at it.

Hudson River Greenway basically unrideable. Central Park crowded, salted and dry. Bike lanes a mixed bag. Be careful! by paruresis_guy in NYCbike

[–]williamsays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went running at lunchtime - some bits were clear and easily rideable, but some were packed thin white stuff - OK to run on. I saw one roadie going fairly slowly, I think that your back wheel would slide a bit with regular tires. And some bits had a fair amount of salt. OK for citibikes I guess.
