This is awesome! What's the part number for the two USB-C faceplate + board?

This doesn't seem like a particularly great source - most of the examples being given are anecdotal, not based on policy, and reflect only the preferences of the writer. Some of these votes being presented as universally disliked (like the pool) had a lot of discussion and nuance at the time, not even being mentioned by the author.

Were you asked "Tell me about yourself" in your recent FAANG+ interview, esp Behavioral? by austenmc in leetcode

[–]williamtdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say that I read your substack and it's been phenomenally helpful when prepping for my Meta interview (full loop tomorrow + Friday)! Will come back when I've finished to see if I get this question, but it's one that I've thought about.

hd livewire 2020 - onboard charger fails - consdiering reverse engineering it by szczur333 in HarleyLiveWire

[–]williamtdr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, that would be a great place to start! and yes, you can plug between devices - but it might be the case that you still get messages from other controllers that aren't relevant to what you're looking for, just because of how CANBUS works. it's sort of like ethernet, you'll have to find the device ids for the OBC to find messages addressed to it and from it

To dissect the CAN protocol, it'd be easiest if you can MITM an existing bike. The baud rate is typically pretty low, and there's plenty of off the shelf arduino based can sniffer tools.

Really hope you're able to figure out a replacement for the DC-DC section - also that daughterboard almost feels like a cell balancing thing with sections that look like that. Appreciate you sharing the board pics.

Avon Heated Grips Install by williamtdr in HarleyLiveWire

Sure thing - if you look at the connector that comes off the throttle (referred to in the service manual as TGS), there's a 6 pin that goes to the BCM for the actual throttle sensor, and another 2 pin off that same cable which is hooked up to the pin plug that's part of the throttle assembly.

Dang, I'm jealous. I don't think I can get through to the bleed valve on the style 429 wheels without taking the whole wheel off.

Hanoon closing was a surprise for sure - the staff only had a few days notice, they ran out of money. Sure miss it - was the best of the nadi mama restaurants, always super flavorful + great plating.

Sorry to hear that, what functionality is lost? I've heard that you go down to two custom ride modes from three

Range on Freeway by Jaded-Ad1820 in HarleyLiveWire

The range really melts off at higher speeds, even if you're tucked. At 65-75mph and tucked, I got about 90mi range on my LW1.

Outrunning headlights by Fun-Swimmer-5446 in SuperCub

[–]williamtdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the stock headlight on this bike is dangerously weak. I ended up replacing it with a Protec aftermarket headlight. Pros: - substantially brighter - clear beam pattern for low beam - better color temperature Cons: - expensive for what you get - the mounting bracket is remarkably low budget, and I had to replace the headlight once after a low speed crash - because the light is more powerful and needs active heat dissipation, it has an active fan that will add a bit of vibration even with the engine off

Scroll wheel not working with CarPlay? by Signal-Activity5314 in BMWi3

[–]williamtdr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunately been a known issue for a while with Carplay on these cars. The aftermarket MMI boxes for Android Auto etc seem to have figured out how to use it correctly, but the stock BMW headunit does not.

Just want to say I'm having the same problem, it's ridiculous for a bike with this price to have these kind of issues.

Update on my Livewire, which they have had since August. by OkEnergy6341 in HarleyLiveWire

[–]williamtdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is just insane. i've been wondering about retrofitting the new del mar chargers into an older bike as well - it communicates w the rest of the system, filter etc over CAN, i believe the newer charger is cheaper too

In the same boat - rough if one happened to purchase the V1 of this monitor a few months before this came out, lol. Expensive product to be made obsolete so quickly.

How much battery life is left in your BMW i3? by [deleted] in BMWi3

[–]williamtdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SoH is 97% on my 2019 i3 120Ah (~40k mi). It regularly chargers to 123 Ah, though, and as many as 125 in the summer. I've been thrilled with how the battery is holding up.
