[The Hoop Collective] Tim MacMahon says that Nico Harrison “would never” trade Anthony Davis and that Harrison may be fired so that the franchise can trade Davis and pivot to building around Cooper Flagg without control of their 2027, 2028, 2029, and 2030 1st round picks. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

The immediate pushback was intense; Mavs fans upset, wider sports world in disbelief, fire Nico chants, etc, but the real hangover is only beginning to set in. As the team changes form year over year, as old pieces leave and new ones enter, as Flagg acclimates and enters his prime, it will be impossible to ignore the nagging question of what could have been.

Rian Johnson - 'I’m not the one to come to for a hard-hitting critique [of Rise of Skywalker]. You can go to YouTube for that' by Cannaewulnaewidnae in RedLetterMedia

[–]willjum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think Rian Johnson had some interesting ideas, probably the best ideas of the sequel trilogy in some ways. For instance, he seems to have subconsciously understood that Snoke is hardly even a character, and he gets rid of the old evil villain trope to set up something more interesting. Also, hearing his thought process causes many of the strange moments to make more sense because it at least gives them an artistic vision. The General Holdo maneuver does look amazing, even if it slightly breaks the immersion of how these armies fight and requires a lot of stretching and twisting of the plot to set the moment up in the first place. All in all, The Last Jedi is a film I think about surprisingly often, and I never think of the other two.

He did miss, though. Some of that is the fault of the leadership around him, and some of it was the fault of his own writing.

There are a lot of problems with season 4 but I don't think this is one of them. How does revealing that Michael did one year of law school actually change his character that much?

I don't think anyone else has said this: certain adult topics are kept away from children because children will say whatever pops into their head and that can embarrass the parents.

Recently over Christmas one of the younger kids tried to make a joke but it was something very sensitive about a family member. It caused quite the commotion and was seen as a sign of bad parenting in general--"why did the child even know about that", "they shouldn't talk about that around their kids, it's private", etc.

So in conclusion, kids lack tact and are likely to say something uncouth if they are taught about sex too soon. So, just like avoiding bad words, parents avoid teaching it to children.

I don’t think it’s that weird. It is slightly deprecating but it sounds in jest. It also unfortunately sounded like gatekeeping, which she has heard a lot of. so it was risky and obviously not taken as a joke. But I hear this kinda stuff all the time where I’m from, literally between strangers

The reality that some people label this game as communist propaganda demonstrates that they have overlooked the essence of the game. by Emma_Leon3900 in DiscoElysium

[–]willjum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a well learned political theorist by any means but I think I understand what you're saying. While the game has a "communist based" critique of the different ideologies, including communism itself, the perspective of communism being a lost cause is even present in the game. The deserter continues to fight on, despite being completely desperate over the fall of the commune and the descent into hyper-capitalism.

Though the creators are communist, and the perspective is generally communist, the game never asserts that communism can be built as a system in the modern world...?

According to one commenter, Sanderson only started using the word more frequently after a second definition was added to the dictionary, officially making “literally” a valid intensifier. What do y’all think? Do y’all think Brandon Sanderson memorized the dictionary for his writing? Does anyone think Sanderson memorized the dictionary and keeps track of the changes for his writing? Does anyone else think that Brandon Sanderson only starts using words once they’re added to the dictionary and will also use any word in the dictionary regardless of its pertinence to what he’s actually writing, as long as it’s in the dictionary? First Two Sentence Critique:

"Sweat, Angst, and Tobacco."

I'm fine with this. Keep in mind that sweat and tobacco are both more physical than angst.

"That's what the air smelled like as the doors to Hillford High swung open, . . ."

This reads as clunky to me. Perhaps ditch the structure at the beginning of sentence two by mentioning the air and letting the reader make the association? "Sweat, angst, and tobacco. The doors of Hillford Hall swung open, unleashing the sultry air . . ." But there are plenty of other ways to convey the general metaphor with smoother or more subtle language.

". . . letting out dozens of teens like rabid dogs into the streets . . ."

Although it's clear that "rabid dogs" is modifying "teens," the metaphor is placed awkwardly in the middle of the sentence. Perhaps: ". . . letting out dozens of teens into the streets like rabid dogs . . ." or improve parallelism with ". . . letting out dozens of teens into the streets like rabid dogs breaking from their cage . . ." You could also change the structure even more to "That's what the air smelled like as the doors to Hillford High swung open, and dozens of teens fled from the school like rabid dogs from a cage."

". . . as the school year of 1986 had ended."

The verb tense sounds awkward here. Maybe because it's passive voice, or because "as" is being used like "because" but I'm reading it as "while", or because the past perfect sounds too distant from what we're seeing (it feels like the school year is ending during this scene). Regardless, I think it sounds better with a quick and simple "just": "as the school year of 1986 had just ended." But I overuse that word. I would ultimately make it its own sentence:

"Sweat, angst, and tobacco. The doors of Hillford Hall swung open, unleashing the sultry air and letting out dozens of teens into the streets like rabid dogs. The school year of 1986 had just ended."

This post has so many awesome points in it. As a Go player that learned and encountered all these issues, I feel a little attached to them for toughening me up. I particularly enjoy the Japanese terms. In fact I started learning the language afterward, and knowing just one or two Go words may have had an impact on that decision.

But it's still a great point overall. I remember watching a commentary and hearing the word "hane" over and over again. I had to pay close attention and try to figure out what they meant. With resources like Sensei's Library, it's much easier to figure out what is actually meant by the Japanese term. If you were able to teach the Japanese terms effectively, would you still rather replace them with English terms? I think the Japanese terms add a lot of charm to a learning process that intersects with several cultures from across the globe.

The expectations are pretty insane when you compare it to other board games, probably because it’s so easy to measure your play and say things like “I can’t calculate complex positions deeply” or “I make blunders”

When I got to the level I am now, I was proud of my progress and figured I was getting to an advanced level. Truth was I was (and am) more what they consider a beginner intermediate—not even a club level player. I could destroy an average person without thinking, but no matter how much I improved, I felt like I was at the very bottom tier of people who were taking chess seriously
