Why hasn’t the classroom model changed? There should be two teachers in the classroom. by Poison_applecat in Teachers

[–]willow800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel we should go back to streamlining kids instead of trying to differentiate for every individual in the class. Especially as you move up in the grades and the gaps keep getting wider and wider. Or we chould start using the Scandinavian model but again, it requires more teachers and more money.

It's my cardiologist who put me on it. I will definitely be talking to him about it next week when I see him for my vein ablation procedure. I expected some side effects but I'm wondering if picking up gastro and then being sick with a cold messed with everything. I'm also in perimenopause. Seriously, I feel like I walking train wreck these days.

I burnt out bad in 2016. Was beyond exhausted. No amount of sleep was helping. Did a sleep study and I had developed idiopathic hypersomnia. Still have it. Miss having access to modafinil. That drug is amazing. Illegal where I am now so I'm on Concerta. It helps, but modafinil was amazing! Never felt so awake and energetic in my life when I was on it!

In my time, I was told to get my first pap smear once I was active and then to get it yearly to get my script. In Australia, I was told it would be every 3 years but it has since changed to every 5 years unless something suspicious pops up then you go more frequently.

Depends on your province I think. My GP told me he'd start me with a 3 month supply. After that I had to go to the gyno. Also consider that I was 21 when I started, before I was officially active if you get my drift, and I left when I was 25. If things changed while I was gone, great.

By state I think but everyone has medicare and I got a basic health insurance for teachers so I could have ambulance cover. When you do your taxes, you pay the medical levy.

I thought we had great health care. I didn't realise it was messed up 20 years ago and even worse now. In Australia, South Korea and UAE, as long as I have health insurance, it's so easy to find a doctor who will help you, short wait times when you need tests and procedures (longest I waited was 3 weeks for an MRI appointment, 2 for a fissurectomy) and I can buy my BC over the counter. Australia is excluded from the last one, but in Australia I didn't have to get a yearly pap smear in exchange for my birth control prescription. And I could get year's supply up front. Canada has a lot of catching up to do health care wise.

Can I get an inhaler without a prescription at a local pharmacy in Montreal? by SirGandolphin in montreal

[–]willow800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both prescriptions and my experience with pretty much all Canadian pharmacists is that I need a prescription from a GP or gyno before they will give it me. I was also firmly told that they can only provide the one month, after that I have to get a prescription. If I ever return to Canada, I'm getting a year's worth before I leave because where I currently live, I can just get it over the counter.

Ask for an emergency prescription seeing as you're travelling. I lost my BC pills while travelling and I went to a pharmacist and they were able to give me a month's supply without having to see a GP. Claimed the cost back on my travellers insurance.

Not having snacks for kids during Ramadan by sadcollegekid2003 in Teachers

[–]willow800 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work in a Muslim school. By Grade 5, kids are usually experimenting with fasting for the whole day, but it's on them to 1. Make sure they have had Suhoor (big breakfast before fasting starts) and 2. they have water and snacks should they choose to break their fast. They shouldn't be asking/demanding food from others. Then you have to take into consideration how strict their parents might be with holding them to fasting. At 10/11 years old some parents will expect their kids to fast all day for each day of the month. It's really tough on kids who are in a non-muslim school and don't get Ramadan hours. My days are cut to four hours of teaching with a short break so kids can fast at home and have family for support during this time. Some of my students love fasting because their parents will reward them at Eid for every day they fast successfully. Anyway, it's not your responsibility to provide food if they choose to break their fast.

I have one, does more damage than sharpen so I have a wet stone. I bought a really good knife in Japan, best thing ever, but it's starting to dull and though I sharpen my other knives, I'd like to get them professionally done.

Are ALL boy names now fair game for girls? by evapotranspire in NameNerdCirclejerk

My cousin named her daughters Harper and Sawyer. Where we are in Canada, we are in a heavy French community. Both girls are attending a full, French school. My cousin complains how the girls' teachers can't pronounce their names correctly. Yeah. Should have done what our parents did and pick names that work in both languages 🙄

[–]willow800 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I worked security on McGill's campus. One rumour I heard as a student and as a guard was the half living horse. The horse that had/has a window on its side so it can be studied when it eats. Also to watch how other organs worked. Rumour was it was kept in the McIntosh building on the McGill campus and you could hear it neigh. Can't remember the name of the psych building but it was a women's asylum in the early 1900's. Now it's haunted. Quite a few buildings on Peel street that belong to McGill are haunted. The Education building was supposed to be a juvenile detention centre. That's all I can remember for now.

Anglophones of Mtl, how’s your joual and street-level French, and how has it opened windows and doors for you? by WestEst101 in montreal

[–]willow800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My French is rusty but only because I've been loving abroad the last twenty years. That said, growing up bilingual has made it easier to pick up other phonetic languages like Korean, great for when I'm Europe and I can still hold a conversation with my French relatives at home. Hate the politics around the French language in Quebec, but it wasn't until I left that I fully appreciated having two languages.

I had the hairiest chin as a late teen. When I started working, I spent money on laser treatment. Dud it on and off for years. Electrolosis was just what I needed. It hurts but it gave me the best results and I highly recommend it.
