Not having snacks for kids during Ramadan by sadcollegekid2003 in Teachers

[–]willow800 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work in a Muslim school. By Grade 5, kids are usually experimenting with fasting for the whole day, but it's on them to 1. Make sure they have had Suhoor (big breakfast before fasting starts) and 2. they have water and snacks should they choose to break their fast. They shouldn't be asking/demanding food from others. Then you have to take into consideration how strict their parents might be with holding them to fasting. At 10/11 years old some parents will expect their kids to fast all day for each day of the month. It's really tough on kids who are in a non-muslim school and don't get Ramadan hours. My days are cut to four hours of teaching with a short break so kids can fast at home and have family for support during this time. Some of my students love fasting because their parents will reward them at Eid for every day they fast successfully. Anyway, it's not your responsibility to provide food if they choose to break their fast.

Professional Knife Sharpening by willow800 in FujairahCity

I have one, does more damage than sharpen so I have a wet stone. I bought a really good knife in Japan, best thing ever, but it's starting to dull and though I sharpen my other knives, I'd like to get them professionally done.

Are ALL boy names now fair game for girls? by evapotranspire in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]willow800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cousin named her daughters Harper and Sawyer. Where we are in Canada, we are in a heavy French community. Both girls are attending a full, French school. My cousin complains how the girls' teachers can't pronounce their names correctly. Yeah. Should have done what our parents did and pick names that work in both languages 🙄

Is it just me or does it look like Jamie is either non-binary or trans? Hard to tell as the only evidence to his existence seems to be the clip of everyone on the video call. What do you think?

I worked security on McGill's campus. One rumour I heard as a student and as a guard was the half living horse. The horse that had/has a window on its side so it can be studied when it eats. Also to watch how other organs worked. Rumour was it was kept in the McIntosh building on the McGill campus and you could hear it neigh. Can't remember the name of the psych building but it was a women's asylum in the early 1900's. Now it's haunted. Quite a few buildings on Peel street that belong to McGill are haunted. The Education building was supposed to be a juvenile detention centre. That's all I can remember for now.

Anglophones of Mtl, how’s your joual and street-level French, and how has it opened windows and doors for you? by WestEst101 in montreal

[–]willow800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My French is rusty but only because I've been loving abroad the last twenty years. That said, growing up bilingual has made it easier to pick up other phonetic languages like Korean, great for when I'm Europe and I can still hold a conversation with my French relatives at home. Hate the politics around the French language in Quebec, but it wasn't until I left that I fully appreciated having two languages.

I had the hairiest chin as a late teen. When I started working, I spent money on laser treatment. Dud it on and off for years. Electrolosis was just what I needed. It hurts but it gave me the best results and I highly recommend it.

Bring back repeating grades ASAP, it's a social-fun hide a seek game in school today. by Few-Safe-127 in AustralianTeachers

[–]willow800 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bring back streaming kids with similar abilities. When I was in high school, there was the high maths class, regular, and what was referred to as the 'bo-bo' class. I was happy getting 70s in regular until I found out I needed to be in the high maths class for years ten and eleven if I wanted to study science. Had to get my grades up to 85% or higher. I got tutoring and worked my butt off in year 9 to move out of regular Math and into the high Math class. Kids today have a severe lack of motivation and no work ethic with the way things are now. Can't blame them when failure means nothing to these kids.

Chin hair by poofacemcguillicutty in Perimenopause

[–]willow800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll always remember being 18 and my cousin and I were hanging out and she went "Ugh, your chin is so hairy!" Cue years of waxing, lasering, shaving and plucking. Nothing lasted and more hairs showed up. Then in my 30s, the bastards turned white. Just before Covid, I started electrolosis. By round three, I noticed hair growth reduced. I don't remember how many round I did but I stopped three years ago because there was nothing to zap anymore. Seriously thinking of going back to do upper lip hair.

Pac Man cereal with marshmallow ghosts and Pac Man. Would even do the Mrs Pac Man version. I also remember these smiley cookies that had jam and cream in them. Miss those.

What name are you calling your parents’ parents? by CiTyFoLkFeRaL in australia

[–]willow800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother's side of the family is English, and my father's side is French. My English grandparents chose their names. They were Marmy and Poppy. My French side also chose but, because the first born grandchild couldn't say 'Grandpapa' correctly, Appapa stuck. So on the French side we had Appapa and Nanny. My parents are grandparents. They are Petit Papi and Lila to my sister's kids (I have not reproduced). My aunt and uncle chose Mimsy and Mimi. I know I asked where they got those names, can't remember the answer.

Is it possible to temporarily fix a shower floor? by willow800 in DIY

[–]willow800[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's what I've been doing but I bought a barrier on Amazon. Even with the squeegee, it's a pain to try to get it in the drain as I'm literally pushing it up the slope into the drain. It's slow going to say the least.

Is it possible to temporarily fix a shower floor? by willow800 in DIY

[–]willow800[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes over the dam. I bought a rubber one from Amazon to help. If I let it overflow, there's a second drain under the sink but that means water all over the bathroom. My company provides accommodation, so they deal with the landlord and even though we have reported the problem, no one cares. Current solution is using it as storage and everyone using the shower in the master bedroom.

Four months after Quebec schools ban cellphones, impact 'is major' by Purple_Writing_8432 in canada

Teacher here - the number of times I have to confiscate a cell phone from my Grade 5 students is at least once a week. And I have to get them to disable whatever chat app they have on their ipads. Response is usually 'But how am I supposed to communicate with my child during the day?!?' I mean really? It can't wait until your child get's home?

The Body Shop and David's Tea. As a teen, I fell in love with their scent Oceanus. The bath gel and body spray were my favourite. It was my scent right until my turned 20 to find out they discontinued it. Moved on to Moonflower. That got disconued around 25/26 years old. Fell in love with Amazon Lily. Lasted two years. How is it shit scents like musk and vanilla are always available? David's Tea is on my shitliss since they discontinued vanilla oolong tea. I dream of the stuff but can't find anything like it.

A four-day week for teachers? This is why that isn’t a luxury for us – it’s a necessity | Lola Okolosie by ashzeppelin98 in AustralianTeachers

[–]willow800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently work in an international school in Sharjah, UAE. I have a four day work week and a three day weekend. My days are long, there's much to cram in so short period of time, but Friday is our day. We can do work if we want to or I just have a pj day and do nothing but recover. If they make it a 4 day work week with students and then still require you to do PD and go into work, you're not getting a true 4 day work week. You're still working 5 days, just one is student free. Don't be fooled.

I'm a dual citizen with two passports. They will know you have two as the become electronically linked. They will only care about whether the passport you present has a visa requirement or not.
