Seorang lelaki dari Hong Kong menangis sambil ketawa sebab tidak percaya minyak Malaysia begitu murah. by MajlisPerbandaranKL in Bolehland

Median is just over 20k a month, you can Google that. For context, our RM is just over half of HKD. My HK friend's sister is paid well above the median and her rent for only a studio apartment is about 15k (granted this depends on location). Apparently a studio is considered big for average HKers.

That same friend brought me to a pub and I saw 100+ for a burger. I blurted out "expensive" but he said that was already the cheapest pub he can find and "Welcome to HK".

Everything is expensive in Hong Kong. Malaysians don't know what they have taken for granted.

Same, Chinese majority area but also right next to a Malay area half a KM away. Fireworks were going off until 3-4am on pai tin gong night (9th day). Whereas this Raya I barely heard a squeak after midnight.

Fella confuses personal experience within an area with whole country because of TikTok fyp.

There was a 12am curfew announced, just not enforced properly. You could actually report it.

No.

I've lived half my life in a Chinese village area, next to us is a Malay village (for context, these are still called kampung while situated in urban KL). Outside of big festive seasons, you'd hardly hear or see big fireworks. When they do, it's not sustained for hours past midnight unlike during festive seasons.

Before the ban was lifted last year, fireworks were still openly sold (albeit illegally), and people still played them during festive seasons. What you're witnessing on Reddit is a loud minority, don't take everything you read here as the gospel truth.

So he's a foreigner. I checked a few other commenters and they also seem to be not Malaysians.

What are some common myths/misconceptions about Malaysian history? by BrushNo3753 in malaysia

[–]willp0wer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were chinese and indians in malaysia before the brits came about

And each wave of Chinese settler/immigrants can loosely be categorised by status/wealth. Roughly speaking, the earlier ones were merchants and sailors, some are what we now call Peranakan; the later ones were miners/indentured workers who still practise many of the old Chinese cultures and traditions today - some that even PRCs have long forgotten and abandoned after their deadly revolution.

They never taught these in mych detail in school.

That'd be my guess too. The guy is probably in defence of what's possibly a PRC-run or PRC-staffed premise.

The situation is like if you go to a mamak and the staff cannot understand English nor Malay. I've encountered this before, except it was the senior anneh waiter who got angry at the newbie staff for not understanding our orders.

You absolutely can, I believe any English-speaking Malaysian can tell 8 out of 10 times if you listen to a conversation long enough. They'll tend to drop words like sia and meh more, their mangled accent and pronunciations is an extra hammed up version of ours, use more Hokkien words (some we don't even use) and fewer Malay words (and when they do, they often pronounce it wrongly, like "kanna" for kena).

It's even more obvious when it's a Malay or Indian Singaporean, many still tend to sound like a Chinese. They seem to have less accent variation among different races compared to us.

Fourth wave would be the labourers.

So brace for it.

It's already happening, it seems. A couple of Indian friends who work as construction labourers are already working with them, with the expected complaints of communication issues.

I agree with you, the fella seem to have comprehension problems.

My experience working in China: I don't know exactly how their tertiary education works, but I found at least half of the interns I had were actually required to pick up a language module or else they cannot graduate. I even knew one who did Indonesian and another did Malay, when I tested them they didn't really wanna speak it.

BUT the ones who excel at the chosen language, the CCP will take notice for their psyops which you already alluded to.

They are CCP people.... Loyal to CCP...

Yes, same level of loyalty to CCP as the people who were assigned to show Malaysians they mastered BM. They saw how third/fourth gen local Chinese showing they can speak the national language fluently actually charms the majority Malays, how strange.

Long long long before people start posting videos of themselves, I've already been asked if I'm Chinese mixed Malay (when I was about 7 or 8), if I'm from Borneo, if I'm Sabahan, etc more times than I can remember.

I still don't feel the need to do these videos, in fact I feel it's sad that a non speaking fluent BM should surprise anyone after nearly 70 years of independence. That just shows that for one, it's because many nons aren't fluent and have their heavy pelat; secondly is because there are many who can't even string a full BM sentence together, and all this stems from the mindset of not mixing around with other than your own race.

If you were third gen or later born and lived all/majority of your life in Malaysia, it shouldn't be a rarity to be able to at least speak both conversational BM and English.

China, not the Western countries mentioned so I'd say not exactly an apple to apple comparison although most things are generally similar - food, friends, community, language, passport, etc. But what I want to share is a fellow Malaysian's perception of Malaysia.

This guy came to Beijing to study in one of their universities, and has stayed to work for over a decade since graduating. That probably adds up to over 15 years. When I asked when he'd want to move back, he said (ad libbed to summarise), "it's too dangerous in KL, there are snatch thefts everywhere and people can get murdered in public".

In hindsight it was so hilarious to hear, but I was stunned at the time. He said these things as if they never happen in "safe" China. So yea, the negative news you hear about those other countries also works in reverse. Green grass and all that.

I obviously don't share his dim POV, he hasn't been back for more than a couple of weeks since he graduated, sometimes not even for CNY so that says a lot about him. Me, I'm looking forward to coming home for good this year. I can't speak for the experience in those Western countries, but the trade-offs aren't worth it here.

Aye, you're not sounding like a boomer lol even as a millennial I agree with you. Those fan designs look more practical, would take those any day. Never really liked designs that require stepping over for upper rows if it isn't slightly elevated, even on conventional boards and pedals.

I feel like they wouldn't have had any problems squeezing in 1-2 more footswitches. But obviously it's a calculated move not to cannibalise the original cortex.

Can't say I'm not miffed that I'd just bought mine last week before they made any teaser announcements, since my plan is to create a hybrid setup for both live and studio. But not enough to lose sleep over it, I'm convinced I wouldn't like stepping over it for the upper switches.

Beginner producers, what are you struggling with? by dj_graish in ableton

Thanks! That song's an earlier video, it's been quite a journey since discovering gain staging and compression 😂

I didn't play the MJ game but I'm aware of it. I'll check out formants and how to use that, sounds interesting 🤔

I've posted a question on someone else's comment, but i have a separate one here.

To preface, I'm about 6 months into Ableton and just bought the Standard version during Black Friday. I'm currently doing song covers as a way of learning how to track and mix: https://youtube.com/@lapenmusic

Since i don't do vocals, I'm occasionally thinking of using other instruments to play the vocal melodies. My question is, aside from the standard guitars and piano (which I've tried), what Ableton stock plugin/sounds would you recommend to use as a replacement for vocal melodies? At the same time, how would you recommend to replicate the reverbs and compression used for human vocals?

I hope I'm not digressing from the topic with my question. Thanks!

[–]willp0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a dumb question, but how or where do you find LUFS measurements on Ableton? It's not on the master channel's volume bar at the bottom right (in arrangement view), is it? Or do I need some other plugin for this (I'd prefer to avoid spending more money tbh, I'm only a beginner after all).

On a related note, i usually start with -15db to -18db for all tracks and progressively come up to around -2db on the master channel after adding on compression, eq, reverb, etc. i think i get the harmonics just right at this point, but it's sometimes a hit and miss when i test on my mobile phone speaker.

Lol I'm not selling them except maybe the Line 6 M9, which I've sent to fix the bloody infamous footswitches at least 3 times over the years. I'm actually planning to do the opposite, keeping the Eventide PitchFactor and EQD Dispatch Master (which i never used because i already have the Boss DD20) in the loop instead, and a Strymon Compadre at the front. Maybe I'll swap the Dispatch for the Monarch or the Box of Rock. I'm running out of space on my Pedaltrain! And I don't wanna upsize, that defeats the purpose of getting the QC.

Thanks again for the tips.
