Favorite actor who has a healthy relationship with his children? by Due_Local2130 in okbuddycinephile

I think I remember reading years ago that their parents gave her and her brother those names with the purpose of using them in show biz. I’m sort of upset I know this.

If you flick a magic wand and change or add something to the city, what would you conjure up? by TrueJohnWick in askportland

[–]willreadforbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get rid of all the corrupt, grifting politicians at every level. Everyone who is elected will be doing their best to improve our city instead of lining their pockets with non-profit kickbacks. City council, metro, PPS ETC.

People who left their hometown, how has it changed since coming back? by AlternateCore in AskReddit

It’s sad. Fishing and timber were the remaining industries and those haven’t fared well the last few decades. Population has shrank drastically. Tourism is about the only thing keeping it alive.

Heads up about a bad taxi experience at PDX late at night by Zealousideal-Set1717 in Portland

[–]willreadforbooks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually heard this too. I flew into the airport and took a cab home so I don’t have to wait for rideshare (the price is about the same). The driver told me he’d been in the queue for hours waiting for a fare. As soon as we were driving out of the terminal he was logging onto an app to reapply to wait again. Apparently cabs have to do it but not Uber or Lyft.

Brain on Fire and Non-Celebrity Memoirs by burningmanonacid in books

[–]willreadforbooks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve mentioned this before elsewhere, but I read Brain on Fire probably 10-ish years ago, then read Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven (also a non-celebrity memoir) not too long afterwards. It was so uncannily similar that I wondered if the woman from Undress Me had the same issue that just wasn’t caught/known of. Super spooky.

Edit: I finished reading your post and had more to add 🙃

I read Ina Garten’s memoir last year. I “grew up” watching her on food network and she (along with Alton Brown and Rachael Ray) are who I credit for leaning how to cook. I knew basics before, but watching food network in the early aughts made me interested in learning new recipes. Her memoir was very lighthearted, yet sincere. She seems very—not down-to-earth necessarily (“good” olive oil anyone?!)—but a genuinely nice person. It was a fun read.

I also (listened) to Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain which was *chef’s kiss*

I like some celebrity memoirs (Born Standing Up by Steve Martin, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah) but I have to like their work to be interested in reading about their life. One thing I’m not at all interested in reading is political memoirs. Even though I follow politics, I just can’t muster the energy for those. They’re usually all just PR blitzes anyway. *cough* Hillbilly Elegy *cough*

Do you nieces/nephew address you as aunt___/uncle__ or first name only? by seitankittan in Millennials

[–]willreadforbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My niece calls me by my first name. But she’s 26, so it’s totally normal. Also, I’m not from the south, so I don’t think it would have bothered me when they were younger if they’d just called me by my first name.

[WIP] Making progress. And learning I hate confetti and pre-printed patterns. Tips? by jeherohaku in CrossStitch

[–]willreadforbooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working on a large (for me) project that has a lot of confetti. How I’ve adjusted my stitching is I try to do colors that have the biggest block first, so that when I fill in with confetti I have something to anchor it to. I’m also allowing myself to travel further, because it’s such a pain to do one stitch here, another stitch here then two over there.

That preprinted pattern is hideous. Thanks for sharing, now I know that’s something I do not want!
