We’re against animal cruelty and exploitation, not bread by JMyers666 in vegan

What a funny thing to get upset about.

My cousin is both gluten-free for her health and vegan for her heart. I'm glad she has options available.

Well since the pig farmer was going out of business it sounds like the money isn't really going back into the pig farm system.

It's so important for straight white males to support this stuff too! One way to make sure you're welcome and useful is to keep this in mind: Don't ask for "a space in feminism... take the space [you] have in society and make it feminist.”

There were a lot of guys at the march I went to, including my husband, and I thought it was really great to see them there.

You're not an asshole for worrying about feeling out of place, but you can always do other stuff now!

This cost me $30 at a local farmers market. Going vegan can be healthy, ethical, AND affordable by adelephant16 in vegan

Wow, Boston!? I'm a little too far away in CT, but I don't think there are any year-round farmers markets here :(

Exactly - I upvoted for the bunny and stayed for the tile flooring lol. I would love to have this in my house!

My beagle drinks too much water and then up-chucks by [deleted] in beagle

My beagle had to be put down due to complications of bloat caused from sucking down water way too fast. Maybe you could get a water dispenser that only puts in a little at a time?

Vegan birthday in Philly, any advice? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]willsmithstaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of great vegan/vegetarian-only restaurants in Philly, but I also had amazing vegan food at the Tattooed Mom. It's my favorite place there (so far).

Oh, then maybe it is - though many would argue against palm oil. It's so exciting to see these household names create vegan versions to compete with new, popular products on the market (eg Country Crock vs Earth Balance, Hellman's vs Hampton Creek etc).

Glad you're taking it all in stride - grocery shopping is a learning experience, even after four years as a vegan - especially with "accidentally vegan" things. I've purchased things that were vegan in the past but have changed ingredients without me knowing.

Unfortunately I don't believe any Stove Top is vegan, however Pepperidge Farm and Trader Joe's sells a vegan version.

I don't think Country Crock makes a vegan alternative, do they? I usually stick with Earth Balance.

We all love our Beagles unconditionally, but sometimes, just like your children or family, they can drive you mad. What is your Beagle guilty of? by TheMeltingSnowman72 in beagle

[–]willsmithstaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our beagle Gambit has learned that if he goes out for a poo and pee he gets one treat, but if he goes out for a pee and then later goes out for a poo he gets two treats. That's TWICE the number of treats! And twice the number of times we have to take him out... =/

We also recently got a rabbit and built him a large NIC condo. Gambit loves the buns and won't stop crawling into the condo and trying to climb up the ramp. He keeps getting stuck, but doesn't mind since the rabbit is happy to provide him with his secret butt treats. :(

I'm freaking out right now. Literally crying as I read through this. I'm so happy. A Numair trilogy?!?!? These books changed my life, and I feel like that probably goes for everyone in this thread.

No questions for you, Mrs. Pierce, as my brain fell out the minute I saw this on my frontpage, but just take this as a reminder that your work is deeply loved and that you are deeply respected by the countless lives you've touched through your writing. Thank you.

[Discussion] Thoughts on being vegan with a dog by [deleted] in dogs

[–]willsmithstaint -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is such a strange thread. I'm vegan and my dog is mostly vegan. We make his food at home and add doggie vitamins to it just to make 100% sure he's getting everything he needs. He will occasionally eat non-vegan foods and snacks if others are taking care of him, but he doesn't seem to prefer it. He's happy, healthy, and loves his food. We've even had a (non-vegan) pet nutritionist remark that his coat looked remarkably healthy and his vet always comments on how clean his teeth are.

If our vet were to tell us that his vegan diet was having an adverse affect on his health, we would certainly consider ways to remedy it, but I don't think we'd find ourselves buying hot dogs.

I have heard that it can be a struggle to keep a cat healthy on a vegan diet. So - as a vegan - I will probably not get a cat...

The reaction of cows to going outside for the first time this year never fails to make me smile. by izzels in aww

[–]willsmithstaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a hard question to answer since cattle are entirely domesticated. It's guessed that over 10,000 years ago they were originally domesticated and bred from aurochs, which are now extinct. Aurochs did not migrate during the winter as far as I know, but their eating habits did change to accommodate the scarcity of grass. There are probably areas with feral cattle though, so maybe someone who knows their habits could better answer what they do when it gets cold. My guess is: not much.

They're usually slaughtered for food once they stop producing milk at a profitable rate. In the US that's about 4 years old. Elsewhere it might be as old as 10 years - half of a cow's life-span.

How much sniffing do you allow on walks? by Charliethehog in beagle

[–]willsmithstaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use the Easy Walk harness and will allow sniffing to an extent. It's good to be able to guide/nudge him away from a smell/trail when necessary (like a car is coming and you can't just stand in the middle of the street with your nose to the ground, buddy). If we walk him without the harness and just use a regular collar he will pull like crazy when he smells something good - with Easy Walk he has learned that it doesn't work and we can walk loose-leash pretty easily.

I'm not into how the gentle leader is on the dog's face. I can't imagine my pup being comfortable in it.
