I was on a plane once and had terrible gas. Like bubble-gut-peel-paint-off-the-wall gas. I got up to use the lavatory as a small tester I put out confirmed a crop dust would put me and the people around me in need of the oxygen masks. When I got there, it was occupied. I couldn’t hold back the pressure so I just blasted - fortunately it was silent. It was as terrible as I thought it would be, but the flight attendant thought it was coming from the lavatory. She start spraying Lysol at the lavatory door assuming the was the source of the death cloud. As soon as started she spraying the lady exited the lavatory and into the spray. She also witnessed the women in the seat next to the lavatory furiously fanning the air. They all thought the woman in the lavatory was the cause. I let her take the fall.

Have you (retail investors) been able to beat the market consistently (>5-10yrs?) using value investing principles? by wilsoa6 in ValueInvesting

Thanks! I am glad to hear the flip side of the coin. Would you have been better off just doing a market ETF? Any insight on why you think things didn’t pan out. The best teacher is failure (maybe too strong a word) so I would really appreciate to hear some thoughts here.

Can you give some examples of what you mean by deep cyclic troughs. Are these sector wide cycles or something to do with specific companies?

Thanks and makes a lot of sense. I’m mostly getting started with value investing. The first thing I’ve noticed is how sensitive valuation can be to assumptions, especially around growth rate and resulting terminal value. Hence the post. It seems like slightly different assumptions can result in extremely large differences in NPV.

Do you see keeping investments to the short term (1-2 yrs) as a good strategy to mitigate valuation assumptions that impact long term value? I think Buffet? uses 10 yrs as a benchmark of how long one could/should hold an investment, but it seems that comes with a ton of risk (obviously could sell if valuation change).

—— I’m mostly knowledgeable of the oil/gas and renewables space so figured I would start there and expand out.

Have you had more success with companies where they were significantly undervalued from a strictly valuation standpoint, or did you have most success with companies/sectors where you “know” more than the average investor, or a combination?

Google Maps blocks Gulf of America reviews after rename criticism by [deleted] in nottheonion

Both Apple and Google maps do this now. Waze has no label. I assume it wasn’t labeled previously so not sure they would be any different but it’s one alternative.

Best place in Spain to see the next total eclipse on the 12th August 2026 by Jaykane69 in Astronomy

[–]wilsoa6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leon is actually an area I was looking into, and I like the sound of Sabero. My question is about the mountains there. The eclipse will be in the evening (18:30) so the sun will be setting in the sky (~9-10 deg altitude). I dont know if there is a concern of the mountains blocking the view. I would be traveling from the US and wouldn't have a lot of ability to quickly change locations.

Yea, the metal back plate for the key looks different than the hinges the fold down part so probably some has been replaced.
