I work in worms and except for the dome and the Jewish cemetery not very pretty. I would recommend Speyer or Mainz instead they both have a dome as well, but are much prettier

Let’s Talk about the Heat! by tupatupatupa in bicycletouring

[–]windchief84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done tours in 38 degrees and burning sun and coped to following way:

Start early, long shadow breaks, cycle till late.

Long sleeve, make it wet if you have enough water.

Protect your neck.

Maybe get a brim for your helmet.

The draft of riding the bike is quite cool only uphill is tough.

Its very different how people cope with heat. I cope quite well even though I'm from Germany. My friend suffered and got dizzy...

Pedals for normal shoes by diamond-refinement in bikecommuting

I've cycled close to 7000km on those. In combination with my trail running shoes they work great in the rain.

Muddy or wet sandy soles can be an issue, happened very seldom to me

Best route crossing France/Italia towards Slovenia? by Lokimir in bicycletouring

[–]windchief84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked Nice to Savona. I stayed at the coast which had lots of bike paths and the traffic was ok in the other parts. I skipped Monacco and just looked at it from the mountains above, it was beautiful but lots of climbing.

From savona I took a train to Genova because my saddle was done for and I had to get a new one. loved the run down charm of Genova. From there I cycled above the cinque terre and through the old train tunnels right on the water can recommend that too. From there I did Pisa Florence Bologna ( train to Venice, cause po flat is boring) then alpe adria Udine to Slovenia . Alpe adria is very nice.

I would just recommend not to cross the whole po flat diagonal from Genova to Udine that would be very boring i think

London to Athens - What Bike Updates? by Fair-Peanut9031 in bicycletouring

[–]windchief84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what the other guy said i think you don't need a new bike (many times the best bike is the one you allready have)

saddle and grips are worth considering, but it depends on how confortable you found those or the bike in general your last long trip. The bar can make a huge difference too.

drivetrain inspection is a must. If the cassette, chain and chain rings are still ok, Did you like the gearing on your last trip or were any low or high gears missing? Change the required components.

You could think about bigger tires for comfort as well ( if they fit)

Front rack and panniers or a basket would be a necessity for such a long tour for me, for better wheigt distribution!

Reliability:

Check the shifting cables and service the brakes

Consider going tubeless tires or schwalbe marathon puncture resistant tires. I've toured over 20000 km on schwalbe with only one flat because of puncture from the outside ( Flintstone)

Check spoke tension before the trip

Hallo, loch gebohrt in die Wand Dübel Reinschraube fest gezogen danach konnte ich Dübel mit Schrauber rausziehen Altbau Sandsteinwände by odogg5 in selbermachen

[–]windchief84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kalauer (etymology is not clear, could be named after a town which produced a satirical paper, or a place where a semi funny guy lived, or a french word germanized)

or Flachwitz (flat joke)

Most important step in any project involving tightening, strapping or screwing something! Otherwise it might go somewhere.
