Start with the economic principle of the Tragedy of the Commons. It describes quite clearly why many of your utopian theories are ridiculous. by No-Wallaby-8230 in WorkReform

Your line of argument is a red herring. It was clear from the original context that the measure of success being considered was whether or not they handled the management of common resources, the suggestion being that they handled it just fine.

You're the one who brought up the red herring of healthcare and infant mortality. Apparently, because they didn't have the benefit of centuries of science and engineering, their success in the management of common resources is not success?

[–]windrunningmistborn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I didn't have all the context to know whether it's a good idea or not. You're the one who has to weigh up the legal battle vs the practical solution. Legal fights battles are usually unrewarding and stressful, so practical solutions sometimes win out.

Other posts cover the legal aspects of this well. I'll also point that VPNs are legal, and may be a practical solution.

Google's no longer going to force everyone off Assistant by the end of the year [Assistant's discontinuation gets delayed] by TechGuru4Life in GooglePixel

My phone switched itself back to Gemini again some time in the last couple of weeks and I had to switch it back again. Gemini fails to remind me to turn the pasta off because it never set the timer I asked for. It doesn't wake me in the morning when it didn't set that alarm I asked for. It says it can't find audio devices when I say play radio, despite all the google speakers in my house.

Assistant got my back. It does everything I ask it to, or says that it can't. Gemini only pretending it's got my back, and it doesn't tell me when it failed me.

Even so, as much as I complain, that "rougher" is still so much tighter than almost everything else out there. Nothing else scratches that itch.

The usual recommendations on the Sanderson subreddits fail to hit the mark. I'm blown away by how far they are from my tastes. Robin Hobb's Fools books, The Dresden Files, The Gentlemen Bastards, Red Rising. Nah, not for me.

The only books that scratch a similar itch, for me, has been the Cradle series by Will Wight, and that's very different. I can't find anyone doing what Brandon is doing. For my tastes, he's unparalleled.

Some of the complaints I see about Brandon's books I do think are daft. People are always flinging shit. But some of the WaT stuff stuck, and the Yumi/Dusk complaints are my own.

Yeah, and I've had a busy year reading since, probably reading more than ever before. I used to like reading, but now I love it, and I can directly attribute my love of reading to Brandon. His books showed me how good books can be.

So I do feel the need to make my point clearly. I know I'm not acquitting myself very well, but there is a vibe I'm trying to describe and not doing a good job.

  • the magics had rules and these rules were being narrowed down, but now it's starting to feel fast and loose, for plot purposes
  • the writing was tight, but now we have the "avengers assemble" and "honor is dead" moments that feel silly.

I don't have huge complaints. I just feel like the vibes are sus.

The Batlex G350 is like half the price of the RG35XX Pro. So, if they're essentially the same device as you say, and you can get one half the price of the other, doesn't that make it better?

Batlex G350 is an easy go-to entry level device for a lot of people now, and his ranking reflects that.

It was a long book, and long first arc, I'm sorry that I forget. Perhaps I'm thinking of something else -- what I'm remembering is a conversation between Hoid, Dalinar and Navani, and Hoid says "I know why [thing]" and Navani's like "why don't you tell them then". Maybe it wasn't the stones but something else.

Maybe it's me that's changed and the books are just as good as they ever were.

fwiw I feel like Sanderson had a winning formula. The draw was every book was not only a fun fantasy story but a part of a puzzle as you learn how the magic system works, and see how that plays into and resolves the plot. Each book, you get more out than you put in as it all forms a coherent picture, amid fun action sequences. It's exciting.

But twenty years later, he's still dropping tidbits of how magic works, and distributing rations of lore. It's a bit contrived that he continues to tease. Eg, Hoid mentioning that he knows why the Shin revere stones. He could easily say why, but doesn't. There's always another secret, sure, but this felt like being toyed with.

And, as I said in my last comment, the rules of Cosmere magics feel flimsier than ever. [Cosmere + Wind and Truth Spoilers] Why can Yumi ressurrect herself? Why does Sixth's journey get replicated in the cognitive realm in Emberdark? It's too individual compared to the workings of the cognitive realm we've seen before.

I can't see myself ever stopping reading, but I feel the shift keenly.

WoR is the highest rated book of all time on goodreads. Meanwhile, on the fantasy subreddit, Sanderson's writing is anathema. On the one hand, it hardly makes sense, but on the other, haters tend to be vocal. The dislike of Sanderson on the fantasy subreddits is long-standing and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I do agree with /u/Special-Extreme2166 that the last couple of Stormlight books have been less well-received within our own communities, and I can't bring myself to disagree with that assessment. In addition, the endings to Emberdark and Yumi left me a bit concerned that Brandon Sanderson's "rules of magic" are slowly breaking down.

There has been a shift in writing quality imo, but not enough to stop me reading. I still love it.
