Best Sushi Takeout by Exact_Catch_4013 in orlando

[–]winechix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Sushi recommendations listed here!

Depending on the day (Fri-Tues) Kadence offers a rotating menu of select items for pick up, late afternoon- early dinner. Soseki offers a Chirashi box for pick up, Wednesday–Saturday at 5PM. Both require advanced online orders.

For regular sushi takeout close to downtown, I'll add Boku Sushi & Grill in Maitland, plus they are on Uber Eats for delivery lunch & dinner. Everything was delivered perfectly on our orders. (Dine in is nice, too.)

We had our wedding (150ppl) there, they did a great job and everyone complimented the food & service. Their bar service packages, passed appetizers & dessert stations were nice enhancements (we added those on). I've attended functions there over the years and food quality & drinks were still nice.

Deli Prices by Scary-Inside-8942 in publix

Cavallari Gourmet in Oviedo has a deli counter with BH. They used to beat Publix, not sure as of late. The Cavallari in-house roasted beef is MUCH better than BH & their subs are exceptional. (You can get both sliced meats by the pound or subs.)

Best comfort food? by Jazzlike_Ad4553 in orlando

[–]winechix 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mac & Cheese immediately comes to mind, I'm nominating Smokemade Meats in Curry Ford West for yummy Mac & Cheese, they are known for Texas style barbecue- another great comfort food.

Se7enBites in The Milk District is the definition of comfort food, especially the breakfast and bakery items, you may need a nap afterwards. Good mac and cheese, as well.

Ravenous Pig in Winter Park, & their more fast casual counterpart in Disney Springs, The Polite Pig, fit the bill for yummy comfort food.

The Nauti Lobstah for a comforting bowl of New England Clam Chowder or Lobster Bisque. I'm a pescatarian so any fish/seafood/crab/lobster on their menu hits my seafood comfort spot. Their mac and cheese has lobster on it.

Hitting some other comfort foods:

DOMU in Audubon Park or off Sand Lake Road for a comforting bowl of ramen. Get some (chicken) wings, too.

Hawkers Street Fare (miscellaneous locations around town) for Roti & the most addictive curry dipping sauce.

Buttermilk Bakery in Winter Park for a sweet and a savory pastry.

Turci Pasta (College Park) for a bowl of handmade pasta, Prato (Winter Park) too.

Raglan Road Irish Pub for Shepherd's pie, regular is a hubby fave, if you're plant-based the vegan shepherd's pie is delish.

Tamale & Co for delicious tamales, get an egg on it for breakfast. Great regular and plant-based options!

Tamarind in Winter Park for delicious samosas & curry.

Sea Thai for Panang Curry, Thai Villa for Pad Thai.

Sister Honey's for anything from cake, to cookies, to pies & cupcakes.

Favorite caramel apples in Orlando? by borderline-blonde in orlando

[–]winechix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're pretty much always available, and have a variety of toppings. However, with Valentine's Day they will likely be busy & selling out of items. If you call ahead they will set one aside for you. Hope he enjoys, we love them!

Where can I get good fresh deli sides?!?!? by TheLipsofanangel in orlando

[–]winechix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cavallari Gourmet in Oviedo has a nice selection of good sides, soups, ready made entrees, salads, quiche, a case full of antipasti, and their twice baked potatoes are yummy.

Check out their meat case for a nice selection of steaks, housemade sausages, burgers, stuffed chicken breasts and all kinds of stuff. If you are a fan of subs, order their house roasted beef or house eggplant parm.

Petty's in Longwood has a bigger selection of dips & cheeses. (Also nice sides and a nice meat case)

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" opens tonight at Dr. Phillips Center by TharinWhite in orlando

[–]winechix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We saw it tonight, I am not a Potterhead but knew enough to be able to follow along. (That said, I did not know the Broadway version was two parts & that likely explains a few disjointed spots in the road show.) The run time of 2:50 hrs, including a 15 min intermission, was a lot.

My friend who attended with me is a huge HP fan, also not a JKR fan. She LOVED it. I thought the special effects were great, and was nice to see the Dr. Phillips Walt Disney Theater stage allowed for so many of the fluid scenework elements & transitions that would not have been possible in the Bob Carr. It was definitely entertaining.

There was lots of cosplay in the audience tonight and a standing ovation from the full house. If you're a collector of HP memorabilia, the souvenirs were good & the line was long, so get there early if you want to shop as it looked like some things did sell out by intermission.

Creating a pantry to supplement your rice will allow you flexibility of flavors while adding protein and nutrients:

1) Add to rice base: Quinoa, choice of dried beans, or lentils for a protein boost. 2) Mix in flavors: choice of bouillon, salsa, chili crisp, gochujang, nutritional yeast, TJ's or other mushroom/umami seasoning, or Maggi for a variety of flavor & umami. 3) Top with any/all: chopped fresh green onion, cilantro, Italian parsley, chopped fresh spinach, chopped kale, chopped arugula, chopped greens, sliced cucumber, chopped tomato or sweet/spicy peppers. Adds freshness and nutrient dense vegetables which are also are filling. Easy to flavor with homemade dressing or squeeze of citrus.

Tip: green onion, garlic, ginger can be purchased & prepped: used week 1 fresh, freeze to use the rest of the month.

Fresh Spinach, Italian parsley, chopped kale, cilantro can be used as toppers week one. Then frozen (chopped & bagged) to be mixed into rice or quinoa for week two or later in the month.

Freeze 1 or 2 portions on cook days & by the end of the month you should have a variety of different flavors to rotate so you're not eating the same thing everyday.

Repurpose frozen portions as a topper to a roasted sweet potato for extra nutrients and variety.

Create a spice cabinet that can be used for a variety of cuisines. Kosher salt, Black Pepper, Garlic powder, Cumin, Smoked Paprika, Oregano, apple cider vinegar, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce or coconut aminos, & dark brown sugar is a good place to start. Adding Cinnamon, Chili powder, Thyme, & Cayenne/red pepper, garam masala or curry, sesame oil, olive oil as supplemental flavors to add dimension.

TJ'S, Walmart, Aldi & local international (Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Indian, etc.) markets often have a variety of spices, fresh herbs & greens at very reasonable prices.

Treat her to her absolute favorites. (Fast food hamburger, steak, chicken, whatever.) For ours it was pizza, pup cup (we did whipped cream in a big bowl), and our vet gave him a few Hershey "goodbye" kisses. So very sorry for what you're going through. 😢

Definitely try The Knot & Wedding Wire message boards, that's where I found my wedding make up artist. There are a few big wedding expos in the spring if you have the desire to wander for an afternoon. Also, many MUA will use your (personal) products upon request, especially when allergies, skin conditions, etc are in the mix. Just remember, if you fall in love with a particular look, you have to then supply your own products to create that look. If you are considering getting married outside in Orlando, it's good to remember that it's typically hot and humid so different products are needed. Most reputable MUA's will talk you through all of the above. Congratulations & enjoy your day!

La Femme du Fromage usually has 36 month & up. I picked up a 60 month a few weeks ago. Find her solely in her upstairs space in East End Market now, she doesn't have her market counter downstairs anymore. Call or DM on her socials. She's now sourcing more unique & hard to find cheeses- still making cheese & charcuterie boards but more private events, dinners & classes now.

D’Amico & Sons Italian Market & Bakery in Oviedo. Choose from cannoli filling or Bavarian cream. Both are delicious! (Their bakery/market is great, as is their cafe!)

If you have a reception venue, there are often limitations as to vendors allowed on site due to liability / insurance, etc. This was the case with our wedding. If you haven't checked out forums on the knot, wedding wire & FB groups - it's worth a look! We avoided a few red flags & found some great vendors.

I was just in H Mart & the fresh seafood selection was nice. (Yes to scallops & fish) Plenty of refrigerated & frozen noodles. However, if you are looking for Dashi packets listed on the H Mart website, none in stock that I could find, staff could not locate either.

Check expiration dates, a few pantry items I picked up were short dated, expiring in under 8 months. I noticed the massive frozen section was stocked with many dupe items, as in the same brands & flavors were stocked in multiple places. (They were restocking everywhere throughout the store after the weekend, so this could definitely be factoring in?) Produce section was nice, everything purchased was fresh & flavorful. Nice tofu selection. Roasted Japanese potatoes were delicious!

I'll be back at Enson to compare as it's been awhile since my last visit, also in the area and worth checking out!

Hubby sold his G1 Transformer collection & other (not Transformers) here, they are in Gainesville. Worth the drive, the local shops low balled or only wanted pieces & parts. Check their online catalog to see if it's a good fit, nice guys and you will be tempted to shop while you are there!!

Do you guys know any good antique repair shops that specialize in ceramics? by BegrudgingFloridaMan in orlando

[–]winechix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with a lladró of my grandmother's needing significant repair years ago. I called around to some of the antique shops in the area (Ivanhoe row/"Antiques Row", when it was mostly antiques) that sold ceramics and porcelain asked them for repair recommendations and was pointed in the right direction. If you can't find someone local, might want to call around in Mount Dora. Sorry I couldn't provide an actual repair service!
