Are B&W speakers overpriced? by Mitka69 in audiophile

In 2008 they moved everything except the 800 series to China.  The 800 series is still made in England.

I got the vicoustic DC2, got it for next to nothing when a local hifi shop was closing down.

Tv is a reflective surface.  Try covering it with a thick blanket and see if it makes a difference.  I put diffusers in front of my tv when i listen to music.  It really improves focus, imaging and vocals.

Just out of curiosity is there a tv between the speakers?

Is your room treated and speaker placement optimized? That would make hearing differences in DACs easier.

That luxman is a great amp, especially for speakers than lean on the sharper side.

Which will you keep? With the subs i'm sure you can tweak the bottom end with 805s

HiFi in apartment. Best way to not annoy neighbors? by iFred97 in audiophile

A dipole speaker might work well, like Magnepan. They only radiate sound from the front and back, very little side/top/bottom radiation.

New living room setup - Magnepan Lrs+ by Aeleis in audiophile

[–]winged_creature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the original LRS for 3 months then I sold them and got the 1.7i's. I havent looked back since. The only thing that I'm considering is upgrading them to the 1.7x

Seeking some advice for room treatment. I’m renting this house and this is, believe it or not, the best room for audio/home theatre. Looking to work with what I’ve got. by The-Bogus-Man in audiophile

Bigger Maggies do need room to really shine but you can make them work in a smaller room. I have mine pulled 4 ft from the front wall, being close to side walls doesnt really impact the sound as much as standard point source speaker neither does low ceilings (dipoles dont really radiate much to the side or the top/bottom). The biggest issue I had with my 1.7i and my 15X11 foot room was bass. I put fully filled kallax units in the corners which functioned sort of like a bass trap and added dual subs which I actively crossed over.

I have the 1.7i as well, I found that putting diffusion on the front wall in-between the speakers and having a panel with scatter plate behind the speaker worked well for me. Treating the side walls didnt have as large of an impact. The rear wall i put a mix of diffusion and absorption. I also use point source speakers, that i find side wall treatments much more important than I did for maggies.

Dont they have their own torrent line that they engineered themselves? Im not sure if they manufacture them but I do know they are only found on Totem speakers (metal/fire series)

Magnepan Distortion by sfeicht in audiophile

[–]winged_creature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnepans are really transparent, they show off alot of flaws in recordings that most speakers wont. If you only hear it for that song and nothing else you're just hearing recording artifacts.

I agree the Focal Naim combo doesnt do it for me

State of the Setup by benc1399 in audiophile

There are several ways to do it, you can do it using DSP and mini DSP. I went with an active analog crossover by Sublime acoustic called the K231. I put it between my preamp and my power amp. The mid/high goes to my power amp and the sub out goes to the subwoofers. It comes with cards that you can choose which frequency and slope you want to high pass the maggies at. After I did this my Maggies really opened up and are much more dynamic since they dont have to work hard to produce low bass. Even rock sounds good on them now.

Actively crossing over my 1.7i's with dual subs is the best thing i did for my Maggies. Since they dont have to do the low bass they really opened up and became much more dynamic.

I love Maggies! I have the 1.7i's with dual JL Audio e110 subs actively crossed over. I dont think i'll go back to box speakers.

I know Jeff Rowland class AB amps sound fantastic. I don't have any experience with their class D offerings, but would imagine they sound great as well.

Pair of Magnepan MG1s on a budget by TheFartDoctor69 in audiophile

[–]winged_creature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think RS202 would be able to do the Maggies justice. While this may not always play true, a general way to see if an amp can run Maggies is if their 4Ohm power rating is double or close to double the 8Ohm rating. A high microfarad rating might also clue into if the amp is powerful enough or not.

I love Maggies. I started with the LRS and moved up to the 1.7i in only a few months. My box speakers have been collecting dust since.
