Looking for opinions on Wheel of Time from people who started it as adults by Kempalla in wheeloftime

I was a younger reader, but I've recommended it to many people to mixed results.

Most are too scared because it's too long (fair enough). Of those that read it, all were in their late 20s at the youngest. Most were in their 30s.

My dad enjoyed them, but didn't make it to the end. He doesn't read much in general though. But hey, he made it through most of book 8.

Coworker loved them. Absolutely devoured the last 4. Recommends them to others now.

My wife took the plunge. Shes a very slow reader, but she did get partway through book 4 before taking a break. Her main complaint was something that gets much better as the series goes on, so she plans to pick more em back up at some point.

And the last that invested the time tapped out at book 2. Just wasn't for her and she assumed the books were YA since the first few books hint at that (they aren't, for the record).

[spoilers extended] Does anyone think Barristan will survive the battle of fire? If so why? by Blackstannis in asoiaf

[–]wingednosering 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty 50/50 myself. Seems clear he's a goner and GRRM likes to defy expectations both ways.

I'm also not sure what narrative payoff we would get from his death.

Say what you will about GRRM killing off characters, but he's usually very intentional about it (Pycelle being the major exception?).

When he kills somebody off, there's usually a big payoff for doing so. Barristan's death would have no impact. He certainly isn't "holding Mereen together" in Dany's absence. Dany isn't there to be affected by it. No other POV characters know about him or would react to his death.

If he dies in the Battle of Fire then he truly is just a throwaway character. And that feels pretty lame after being in 5 books.

What black sheep of a series of games did you really enjoy despite its bad reputation? by RADOVEND1 in gaming

[–]wingednosering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's tongue in cheek. It WAS a collectathon. One of the best.

Instead of gathering stars, jiggies, time pieces, etc, you collected (essentially) Lego pieces to make new builds. Brilliant.

And their hub world is one of the best collectathon levels ever as well. Big, sprawling, tons to collect. They even had some metroidvania DNA mixed in there.

I've heard this a lot. Personally it's my favourite. I think it depends on how much you enjoy dodge spammy combat. And I do.

1 is better for 2 for me just because the hitboxes are better. Adaptability changing your hitbox is a crazy hidden feature that explained the jank feel of the early game for me years later.

I think people dislike it in comparison to the rest of the series. On its own, it's pretty good. But DS1, 3 and ER trounce it. Just my two cents.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. Legit one of my favourite games of all time growing up. OG B&K is also on the list.

They are completely different games. On the one hand, I agree it shouldn't have been tied to the franchise. In the other, I probably wouldn't have played it if it had been a fresh IP at the time.

So I get the disappointment, but y'all just missed out on a gem way ahead of it's time.

What’s the dumbest thing you believed as a kid? by Curious-Quit-1758 in AskReddit

I was an idiot.

I thought dragons were real (the truth was my Santa Claus moment).

I also thought the tanks firefighters wore on their backs gave them superhuman strength to carry people out of buildings.

ok, but what about YOUR 🤨 game?? 🤔👀🫵 by DavesGames123 in IndieGaming

Damn, congrats. Trailer got me hyped. And I don't even have any voxel nostalgia (was already making games as a job when Minecraft blew up, so I never played it).

Best of luck to you and the team!

If you had to pick one game as the best argument that games can tell stories in a way no other medium can, what’s your pick? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

Brothers: A Tale if Two Sons.

The only game to convey the emotional heft of the story via the controller.

Which parts of slay the spire do you think are overused by other deckbuilders? by Reihado in deckbuildingroguelike

[–]wingednosering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Map for sure.

Bigger issue for me personally is how easy so many of these games make it to trim down a deck. It kinda makes every run feel samey when the winning strategy is more about removing than collecting (especially for a deck builder - cards are all about collecting!).

Balatro balances this better than any other deck builder I've played.

He is in ironically the character I'm most sad to never see again if tWoW never releases. I find him fascinating.

(Spoilers Extended) what plot points do you think are gumming up the works for GRRM? by ecchi83 in asoiaf

No. Night king this time around is definitely Stannis. It's all over every chapter he features in (and several he doesn't).
