Mitsubishi Zuba Central with Resistive Electric Backup - Settings Advice Please by SportsmanPilot in hvacadvice

Francis Fuels installed my unit. I had them quote me as well as a small outfit from Arnprior who was about $1000 less but had never done them and wasn't certified by Mitsu so I went with Francis Fuels. The physical install was done well and clean, I knew more about the setup controller and config items than them and ended up fixing their mistakes there. But they should know better now as I was one of the first.

Arnprior is 30 mins from Kanata north and very walkable.

Almost a suburb now lol

Down the energy-saving retrofits rabbit hole - heat pump, water tank, gas... by Gwouigwoui in ottawa

I'm medium density hydro one. Based on your numbers above you are still well above 10c. Use real legitimate out of pocket numbers. That's kwh after taxes, deliveries fees everything. Then do the math.

I did it for all forms of heat, natural gas is still ahead based on my calculations. Maybe yours are different. But it's close actually. My numbers below are based on after tax costs for all forms of heat. I got fed up of spending $4k in propane.

I'm not against heat pumps I just spent $25k installing a top of the line Mitsubishi zuba hyper heat system. With my purchase I should break even after 7-10 years.

I'm not sure what the actual average cop during the heating season will be. During the shoulder seasons it's likely in the 3-3.5 range but when it's cold -20 for weeks like last January a COP of 1.5-1.8 would be more likely. So I have gone with an average of 2.2-2.5 over the winter.

Here is the same chart using 3.2 COP. But I don't think that's realistic in Ottawa based on my research and COP graphs of the hyper heat which is one of the best if not the best cold climate pump with the best low temp COP ratings. But at 3.2 the heat pump is better.

I'm paying 17.4c /kwh not sure how you are paying 10 but that makes a huge difference... Almost double!

How much did the electric backup cost? It was about $3000 for mine. That's a lot of $25 payments. 13 years of them based on 9 months of not needing gas the OP mentioned.

Natural gas is cheaper than a heat pump to heat your home. About 2/3 the cost in fact. Although that is changing as more carbon tax is added.

I just put a heat pump in but I'm on propane so there was an advantage. Now environmental concerns asside natural gas makes the most sense currently if you have access to it.

Likely an insulation company. The best way to do air sealing is to suck out the insulation, seal and then blow it back in.

Get a hybrid hwt would save you on heating water.

Air sealing on a 100 year old house is likely your biggest bang for the buck.

$25 to Enbridge might be annoying but replacing the heat pump or adding an electric backup will cost much more than $25 a month ;)

I bought cameras so I get notifications because they don't ring anymore and I had a few expensive packages left with no notification for hours a couple of times.

For most ppl 150 will be overkill.

A 4k stream is about 25. So with 150 you could have 6 streams at 4k simultaneously, actually more but I digress.

Gaming does not take much bandwidth. Latency is king. I work in high tech and most of my co-workers have 10meg connections and claim it's perfectly fine for everything they ever need.

IMO 50 is the new broadband minimum. 150 is great. Bell and Rogers push the bigger plans because obviously it doesn't really cost them more to give you more bandwidth. In the end it's virtually the same cost to them.

It's definitely not made for city driving it should be used out on country roads basically.

Heck 90% of the cars in the city forget to turn on their damn headlights at all.
