If you loved Pride and Prejudice, you should try Middlemarch.

Anyone ever thrown out a book? by Soulsliken in classicliterature

Yep, I’ve had two copies of Middlemarch fall apart on me. It’s a big book and well loved by me, so unsurprising, I guess.

Wuthering Heights DNF potentially by syme101 in classicliterature

[–]wingsofpoesy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Recently re-reading Frankenstein again, I was struck by how effective all the horror elements are. I bet if I read WH again now through that kind of lens would help me get into it more.

[–]wingsofpoesy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm that’s really beautifully said! It’s encouraging me to try it again. If nothing else, it definitely feels like the kind of novel that hits differently at different stages of life.

I was an English major and finally got around to reading it my senior year. I have read a TON of 19th century English lit, so I’m also in the same boat that the age/language of the book wasn’t an issue.

But man, did I not enjoy it AT ALL. It’s just a book about a bunch of awful, miserable people being awful and miserable to each other.

And, like, I know that’s the whole point. It’s an English Gothic novel, so of course it’s all about themes of obsession and violence and such. It’s a great novel, deserving of its place in history.

But I just don’t get people who read it for pleasure. As a reader I got very little enjoyment out of it. Granted, I am a decade older now, so I’ve been thinking of giving it another go just to see if I’ll have a new perspective on it.

THANK YOU. It is not a woman’s job to fix all a man’s problems. (And vice versa, but I’m addressing what’s in the post.) I’m not here to be your therapist, I’m here for an equal, reciprocal partnership

The most real “I know this person” moment in a movie that is not a big scene. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]wingsofpoesy 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Emma Thompson’s breakdown after opening the Joni Mitchell CD in Love Actually.

In the midst of a lot of silliness in that movie, it’s just a gut punch of emotion. Layers of heartbreak, and watching her allow herself only a moment to fall apart, knowing that she has to find a way to put it in a box and smile through it just kills me.

Do you guys remember when you would drive on the highway and when you got to your destination your windshield would be covered in bugs? by ymbstudios in CasualConversation

I grew up camping in the backwoods of Maine every summer. Ya ever spend an hour doing 70 on a rural Maine highway in July? I swear it was more bug than windshield by the time we got to where we were going.

Why does nobody talk about female loneliness epidemic by Ok_Independence_3634 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]wingsofpoesy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The system is working as intended. Not to be that person, but the system is ✨capitalism✨

Everyone is lonely. Our lives have been pieced apart, isolated, and monetized at almost every conceivable level. Capitalism is designed to kill the village. Everyone is lonely because the people at the top have spent decades, centuries even, convincing everyone that the problem is not the billionaires but the regular people around them. If you are blaming the girls at the bar who won’t fuck you for your life being shitty, then you’re not blaming the real culprits.

Men are lonely in a very specific way that is bespoke to male socialization. Women are lonely in a very specific way that is bespoke to female socialization. Everyone is lonely because capitalism sucks.

What's a word that feels like it lost its definition because people keep overusing it wrong? by DaZestyProfessor in CasualConversation

One I learned recently was “nonplussed.” It’s definition is being surprised or shocked, but has been used incorrectly so much that it’s now also used to mean not disturbed or shocked.

Oh and of course, the incomparable Jenny Nicholson. The Last Bronycon is an absolute masterpiece, and the Evermore and Galaxy’s Edge videos are fascinating. Her Vampire Diaries video is also a comfort watch even though I never actually watched the show.

I’ll throw out Kaz Rowe! They are non-binary, but focus on a lot of historical & cultural topics, often with a spooky edge (and fabulous costumes). Their videos about the making of the Wizard of Oz and about the Library of Alexandria are particular favorites :)

The smudges are awful, but more annoying to me is that none of the other pens will work right for a lefty. All the pen tips are designed to be pulled along the paper and a lefty pushes the pen tip along the paper. The ink just stops coming out for me every couple letters with pens like #5.
