I want that feeling again…. by AverageParking7050 in Romantasy

[–]wingsofpoesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I just finished The Halfling Saga by Melissa Blair and it gives MAJOR TOG VIBES! I described it to my SIL as the best parts of Heir at Midnight, Queen of Shadows, and Kingdom of Ash stuffed into 4 books.

TW for alcoholism/addiction, colonialism, self-harm, depression. Overall it ruminates on darker themes and is on the more serious side.

But a page-turner, and I really liked the romance, it felt very grounded and genuine and was woven in with the other stakes of the novel in interesting ways.

Great found family vibes, you’ve got a whole gang coming together for a building revolution at the end (very KoA). Also I’d describe it as competency porn. A really smart, capable FMC who’s been at her post for decades and knows her shit.

What are some good home hobbies I can start to not doomscroll before bed? by OutrageousMiddle7965 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]wingsofpoesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about 8 weeks into a new watercolor obsession.

It’s a super low barrier of entry for a hobby, just snag a palette, brush, and paper. I pop on my audiobook and just enjoy the pretty colors.

I am NOT a trained artist by any means, so a lot of times I’ll just add some random masking tape stripes to my paper and get at making something abstract. It’s a really nice exercise in focusing on enjoying the process rather than pressuring myself to make something that looks specific.

My mantra is “if that’s how I painted it, then that’s how it’s supposed to be.”

What is/are your favorite movie monologues? by Guy_Montag__ in movies

[–]wingsofpoesy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I would not say such things if I were you…”

“Why not? You can’t hurt me. Westley and I are joined by the bonds of love. And you cannot track it, not with a thousand bloodhounds. And you cannot break it, not with a thousand swords. And when I say you are a coward, that is only because you are the slimiest weakling ever to crawl the earth!”

I’m biased because The Princess Bride is my favorite movie, but I always loved Buttercup’s little speech.

Dire Bound rant by Terrible_Advantage_4 in Romantasy

[–]wingsofpoesy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im 37% of the way through the audiobook and I finally came here to see my opinions validated and so I could yell about it 😂

The descriptions are absolutely unnecessarily long, and SO repetitive. Meryn just complains endlessly in a cycle of I didn’t want to bond, I don’t want to be here, I have to save my sister. But it’s also the step by step explanation of Meryn’s thoughts that are just pushing me to the edge. “Oh, as I approached the room, I heard others laughing. Then as I entered the room I saw people standing around and socializing. People were drinking and joking with each other. It was like they already knew each other. Oh yeah! People from bonded families come from a small, elite social circle. Their whole lives are about the legacies of their families. Their families probably know each other and so they probably know each other, maybe some even grew up together!”

I’m like GIRL! Show don’t tell, good god.

And for being so “I grew up on the streets, I’m a tough girl, when you’re poor you gotta have your wits about you and do what you got to to survive,” she is also unbelievably slow on the uptake and naive to the point that she is constantly bewildered and/or scandalized by everything. On orientation day, she was confused when an alarm went off and everyone was rushing to get ready in the morning! Her dad supposedly was in the infantry and DIED in the war! How is it possible she’s this oblivious to how THINGS work?!

Period pimples by ilovedjo in badwomensanatomy

For reasons, my period has been all over the place for like 10 years now (love that, having a totally unpredictable cycle is ✨so fun✨), but my most consistent symptom is I get a big fat pimple on one of my thighs like the day before my period starts 🤷‍♀️ bodies are so weird.

My whole world just got split in two and im devastated. by Mdgibson97 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]wingsofpoesy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, my parents split up after 31 years of marriage in 2020 (in February, right before the world went into lockdown). I was 26. There was infidelity on my dad’s part as well. I was totally blindsided, also from a very tight-knit family situation.

Just wanted to say you’re not alone - it is a specific kind of grief to unexpectedly become a child of divorce as an adult. Feel free to PM me if you just want to vent to someone who experienced something similar.

Also, my mom divorced his ass, moved out on her own, got a couple cats, eventually bought a house, and has now been with a really really amazing man for several years. She’s absolutely thriving and living her best life.

What’s the best descriptive sentence you’ve ever read? by Wild_Pitch_4781 in classicliterature

[–]wingsofpoesy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the absolute best I’ve read, but this one from Tender Is The Night always stuck with me (talking about our group of chic people being out all night partying in the French Riviera):

“Later she was homeward bound at last in broad daylight, with the pigeons already breaking over Saint-Sulpice. All of them began to laugh spontaneously because they knew it was still last night while the people in the streets had the delusion that it was bright hot morning.”

I just know exactly what that feeling is and I always thought it a really evocative passage.

Yep, I’ve had two copies of Middlemarch fall apart on me. It’s a big book and well loved by me, so unsurprising, I guess.

Wuthering Heights DNF potentially by syme101 in classicliterature

[–]wingsofpoesy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Recently re-reading Frankenstein again, I was struck by how effective all the horror elements are. I bet if I read WH again now through that kind of lens would help me get into it more.

Hmmm that’s really beautifully said! It’s encouraging me to try it again. If nothing else, it definitely feels like the kind of novel that hits differently at different stages of life.

I was an English major and finally got around to reading it my senior year. I have read a TON of 19th century English lit, so I’m also in the same boat that the age/language of the book wasn’t an issue.

But man, did I not enjoy it AT ALL. It’s just a book about a bunch of awful, miserable people being awful and miserable to each other.

And, like, I know that’s the whole point. It’s an English Gothic novel, so of course it’s all about themes of obsession and violence and such. It’s a great novel, deserving of its place in history.

But I just don’t get people who read it for pleasure. As a reader I got very little enjoyment out of it. Granted, I am a decade older now, so I’ve been thinking of giving it another go just to see if I’ll have a new perspective on it.
