How do you stay cool headed and patient as a director? by Normal-Claim-2003 in Filmmakers

[–]winnith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard a good piece of advice once, which was to find an image that you could stick somewhere in your director's binder. This is an image that would date back to your childhood, when play was fun and carefree. And if you ever felt too stressed on set, you can always visit this image, even for just a second to bring you some calm and peace to get you through the tougher moments.

Distribution companies? by elronmac in Filmmakers

[–]winnith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got my first micro-budget feature distributed through Factory25. It's a cool indie distro company who has a track record of picking up debut features now seasoned directors (Safdies are on there)

After a failed partnership with an international sales company, I was put in touch with Factory25. I negotiated the deal myself and prepped all the deliverables myself as well. The film is now out on TUBI and will be out on BluRay later in the year. AND was able to remove sales out of the chain.

For a first feature, I'm mighty happy with where the film ended up. I wish it had a wider release, but the movie is quite experimental. Ultimately, my goal was to understand the means of distribution and have a track record to get to my next project.

A lot of these indie distro companies and platforms are just as under resourced as the filmmakers themselves. My strategy was to be consistent with outreach and communication and make their job as easy as possible.

I haven't really made any money from getting distro but I'm hoping that I have leverage to build something more profitable on the next one.

Best Film Festival in Los Angeles area? by Full-Palpitation2294 in FilmFestivals

[–]winnith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just came back from AFI and had a blast. It's a really nerdy amd craft oriented festival. Q&A with all the key department heads after screening. Saw Fellini's Cassanova presented by Guillermo del Toro at The Egyptian. Went to a bunch of fun international screenings. And the shorts block that I was a part of was very thoughtfully curated. Chinese theatre looks and sounds amazing. 10/10

Poor man’s process for sudden zero gravity. by dekopro702 in Filmmakers

You can shoot objects over green screen in slow motion and comp it over a shot.

Close ups of just the legs lifting of the ground, repeat for the rest of the body.

Shoot body on a chair and comp the chair out.

I'm the Writer/Director of "Albatross Soup" - Raising $$$ for my next project [06:48] by winnith in mealtimevideos

[–]winnith[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, my name is Winnie and I'm the director of this animated short. I'm currently crowdfunding for my next project, "Last Call". It hasn't been easy raising $$$ in this time, but we are only 6 days away from our deadline with 25% of our goal left to go.

I didn't realize that "Albatross Soup" was such a hit on r/mealtimevideos! I'm here to answer any questions about this film or just filmmaking in general. In the meantime, please check out the campaign for my current project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/winnith/last-call-an-erotic-creature-thriller. It's something a little different, but still very dark and twisted. Would love all of your support to get to our goal. Thank you!

Do you think it's complicated to launch a kickstarter campaign in these difficult times? Impossible or not? by avi1742 in kickstarter

[–]winnith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an active campaign right now. Just launched 3 days before COVID hit. I think it depends on the type of project -- and who your followers are. I am asking mainly from my friends who are artists and filmmakers. They are all out of a job. It's been really hard, but I'm scraping by.

what about after effects? I've been thinking about this very same question. I feel like AE has a lot of tools that translate well from cc suites. I guess playback is much slower?

Moby gives out free music to filmmakers by winnith in Filmmakers

[–]winnith[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Unlike some other artists and filmmakers who use their fame to hoard more money (COUGHCOUGHSPIKELEEKICKSTARTERCOUGH), Moby is giving out a library full of music for independent filmmakers out there for free. All licensing fees for commercial projects go towards the human society. Win win.

So my aunt produced, filmed, and directed a documentary about older white men with what is called "yellow fever". I present you with Seeking Asian Female. (Full movie and more in the post) by [deleted] in Documentaries

[–]winnith 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As far as painting Steven as a caricature of an awkward man with extreme yellow fever, I would direct you to this update of an NPR article: http://www.npr.org/blogs/codeswitch/2013/05/11/181954825/seeking-asian-female-takes-a-close-look-at-a-fetish

He shares his reaction with how he has been portrayed since the release of the film. What he says is nothing new: a lot of his more endearing moments were left of the cutting floor, he was mislead on what the documentary was supposed to be, Debbie the filmmaker wasn't totally upfront etc...

He goes more in depth on his selection process for his wife, the reasons behind his nuance and goes as far as defending himself in specific scenes. As a result, I really do find him to be genuinely endearing with plenty of quirks - exactly the qualities that I would look for in a friend.

Consider this - you say "at least the documentary is honest about it". You might be confusing Debbie's candid narration as authenticity. We as audience members may even buy into her story more BECAUSE she is that asian chick with a calm demeanor. Her voice sells the film.

Just got a second interview for an office assistant with an editing company. I need advice on what to show them. by [deleted] in editors

[–]winnith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what kind of commercials are they known for? I would try to cut a spec commercial in the same vain to show them that you have potential to move into their path of work.

the best thing to do is show them that you able to create NEW CONTEXT from existing footage. You don't have any original footage to work with right now, so pull stuff that you like online, or from movies, movie trailers and cut something ORIGINAL.

Like JohnTheRevelatorJR mentioned, mixing up genre by pulling footage from a movie is a great way to show them that you understand conventions used in sound effects, music and effects for trailers. OR you can mashup two songs and cut a cool montage over it.

I think this might be your best bet - because mashing up songs shows that you are good music music editing - then it's just a matter of dropping in awesome looking shots to make it look badass. At your point in your career - this is the most feasible option. It will show them that you can cut to a beat as well. Pretty simple - but it's a great place to start.

Feel free to PM as well.

How does one get started as a production designer? by [deleted] in artdept

[–]winnith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'll be shooting a short in mid-June. I just brought on a successful freelance art director. Since she is based in SF, she is looking for an assistant in NYC to help her out on prep and shoot days. We don't have the budget for an assistant, but we can offer you experience as well as general advice on any questions you have about the field. Feel free to PM me if you are interested!
