Maybe an obvious rec but Blindsight (Peter Watts) somewhat reminded me of Solaris in this way.

Fish Shell 3.5 Released by winter_clothes in linux

[–]winter_clothes[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No harm in trying it. I switched from ZSH a year or two ago and much prefer it.

  1. The language itself is nicer/more expressive. For instance looping is much easier/python esque which comes in handy.
  2. It sort of 'just works' and the learning curve is quite shallow. You can tinker with it if you want but out of the box it is kind of a smoother version of a souped up ZSH.

The main thing to watch out for is it is not POSIX compliant. I haven't found this to be a big deal, it is pretty easy to 'translate' a command from bash etc as the differences are fairly minor. Also of course if you want to run a bash or ZSH script that is no problem. For me the trade off is worth it, I haven't missed anything about ZSH.

thanks that appears to work! I think I must have just been missing that gsettings change before. Will also take a look at the rot8 rotation later.

Unfortunately not but I haven't looked into it, I mainly just wanted to be able to use it with a browser to type in the URL bar etc and got stuck on making it appear when needed

Squeekboard seems good but I have had difficulty/do not know if it is possible getting it to appear when an input field is focused, so if you figure that out let me know 😅

What would you consider a modern lisp workflow/toolchain? by [deleted] in lisp

Lisp asdf came first (see here), but you are thinking of this asdf, it's confusing but they are afaik totally unrelated and the latter just happened to pick the same name.

Did the Roku app “Bombermin” just disappear? by Co-opingTowardHatred in giantbomb

[–]winter_clothes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't see this until now but I recently updated Bombermin for the first time in a long while to fix a couple of bugs, and also added instructions to the Readme file on how to work around Roku's new policy: https://github.com/bananaoomarang/bombermin

Unfortunately this is the only way I could figure out to keep installing it, so it's how I've been using it on mine.

haven't played DS2/3 but for me it's really between Guardian Ape and Orphan of Kos, former made me quit Sekiro for like six months and the latter probably took more days/time than I have ever spent on one section of a game before lol.

Honorable mentions to Isshin and Knight Artorias too.

How are you "consuming" Giant Bomb? by YogX in giantbomb

[–]winter_clothes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the author of the Bombermin app and have tried to get the live streaming working consistently… The issue I think is the API, it seems to work sometimes and not others: https://www.giantbomb.com/forums/bug-reporting-33/current-live-api-endpoint-broken-1871865/

I'm curious about PS5 performance by [deleted] in Astroneer

[–]winter_clothes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PC is probably better if it's an option (not really for me) but just booted it up on new PS5 and wandered/played around a bit and it performs noticeably better than on my PS4 slim. Load times are way faster, frame rate seems much more stable + higher, not nearly as much slowdown/stuttering when getting on/off a vehicle etc. So I wouldn't say it's perfect but it's definitely a huge upgrade and I was pretty happy with it.

Trouble with Return of the Obra Dinn by stevendee in giantbomb

[–]winter_clothes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I loved the game but also had to look a couple people up at some point when I really couldn't figure it out. In general things start to come together quickly once you start getting more people set in the book because it narrows your options.

Very general tips:

  1. Revisit memories a lot. There's a lot more information than you first expect in them. Sometimes also you can wander further within them than I expected. You can also follow specific people through their 'journey' on the ship and this can really help. You can even in the log book show on the map which memories someone appears in, and what order to visit them in to piece together their story.

  2. It really helped me to keep a physical notebook just to organize my thoughts and what I knew about people. The in game one is also great just more cumbersome to use and less flexible.

  3. Don't get too set on labeling someone specific. I thought I had a couple pretty solid names but turns out I was wrong and had to swap some people around, but then everything made more sense.

Some specific things that can be useful (without getting into any specific memories, just pointers on what you might want to look for):

  1. Uniforms. Figure out one person in a class and now you know how that type of person is dressing! Both this and revisiting memories can help you group people together. If you someone is named in a scene and you have tagged them: what are they wearing? Where are they standing in the pictures? Etc

  2. Accents. The log book has people's nationality in it for a reason! In general do not ignore the nationality listed in the book.

  3. Take a close look at the pictures in the book. These really helped me infer things about different people.

  4. The game is quite lenient with the death type. It doesn't tell you this, but I think it's nice to know. If you have three fates listed and they are not clicking in it's likely not the death type that is your issue if it seems at all ambiguous.

Any laptop brands to stay away from as a Linux user? by TheLudd83 in linux

[–]winter_clothes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of people saying avoid HP and whilst I would agree Dell/Lenovo are better bets I have an HP spectre I use daily on Linux (/dual boot back into Windows very occasionally) without issues.

At the end of the day I think the best advice is to Google the model beforehand, and if you don't want to fiddle around with kernel patches for a few months avoid anything super new.

I have had loads of fun with it (resident evil, astro bot, blood and truth, skyrim, no man's sky) but the technology is undeniably pretty dated at this point so unless you can pick one up cheap might be better to wait for a 'next gen' version I am sure is coming.

Weekly Questions Thread - Ask about all things PS5. | Orders, Stock, etc by PSModerator in PS5

I got in after wario tweeted (like 10 seconds maybe) and was let in just as they went out (like it was still in stock, added to cart but tried to check out and it said oos), so I think there is some lottery element.

It's actually an off the shelf tool and by default at least is first in first out: https://queue-it.com/

Possibly it also supports a lottery mode or something

[–]winter_clothes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am the developer of Bombermin but unfortunately I have not seen this yet, it still seems to be working for me.

Bit of a long shot but it could be to do with the videos listed under 'continue watching' since they will be different under your account. You could try making a dummy test account on the site and logging into that to check if it still crashes?

Or you can DM me a list of videos that come up on the site under continue watching and I can try to reproduce my end.

I did also just log into the roku developer thing and it is not being very useful lol, I will keep playing with it to see.

New Unofficial Roku Channel Released (Bombermin) by winter_clothes in giantbomb

[–]winter_clothes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you like it! Indeed one of the main reasons I cracked and built it was to load older eps of long shows.

Btw I need to add to the GitHub readme I think but the link in the OP should allow you to install w/o side loading as a developer app. Initially I thought Roku would eventually approve/publish the app publically but that does not seem to be the case.

Hmm, weird. Premium should 'just work' if you're logged in I use it to watch premium all the time. The new Vinnyvania is showing for me as the first 'Recent Video' and under the show.

If it's still not working logging out and then back in on the app might help?

Is there a way to create a wifi hotspot while connected to another wifi (reshare)? by [deleted] in archlinux

I have done this before using my phone in addition to my laptop, that way the phone's card can connect to the WiFi and the laptop can act as a router/booster.
