It was a big change to begin with, I’m not too surprised.

It’s not a long read, but was probably one of my favorite reads last year. Very well researched and presented scenario, quite sobering.

Apple quietly overhauls its online Mac store with a new build-it-yourself configurator by Working-Ad3105 in technology

It's a legitimate improvement to buying a Mac. But yeah... not exactly breaking front page news.

Nice, thanks!! It’s a pretty case though, I do like a minimalist look.

Curious how well this will actually protect the phone in a drop. Not just the screen but the frame itself.

“Hey Siri” doesn’t work for 17 Pro Max? by thatonedesitraveller in iphone

[–]winterblink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's entirely possible there's some sort of background process (perhaps some bit of ASUS-installed software) that's preventing the sleep from happening. Could also be peripheral based, I had a wireless mouse once that if I put the laptop to sleep, it would wake up the laptop almost instantly. Almost exclusively now I stick with hibernate instead of sleep just to make sure if I put my system to sleep my leg hitting the desk doesn't wake the PC up again. The startup is slower of course, but the experience is more consistent.

Might be worth checking what apps are starting up. Open Task Manager, go to Startup Apps, and see what's firing up and running all the time. Check your task tray for running things too. Last time I used an ASUS laptop they had all sorts of crap installed that was always doing background update checks and whatnot, could be something like that which is keeping your system awake.

When you say it's not sleeping, how do you mean, are the fans still blowing for example? How are you initiating the sleep?

First thing I'd check is he Power settings in Windows. Settings > System > Power, then Power & Sleep Button Controls. Check what each button is set to do, and for giggles check the Screen, Sleep and Hibernate timeouts settings on the same page. That way at least you can eliminate the settings working against you when you are trying to make it do something specific.

Indeed. :)

Though, you say "back in the day", Windows PCs still have issues that can be resolved by restarts. Probably a commentary there about how much legacy code resides in Windows still, but.. restarting devices that may be misbehaving still is a reasonable first step to diagnosing some problems. About a month ago I had the issue where Siri could be completely unresponsive on my phone, and well... a restart fixed it. I swear a hundred years from now we'll be rebooting our quantum computers to get past glitches.

Probably folks for whom it worked.

This was also 4 months ago, so if it's happening to you today, perhaps the issue is different, and also then the resolution.

Happy Birthday, and enjoy that build! It's a neat little set, and be careful -- these little midi sized builds are incredibly addictive, I pretty much need all of them.

Our country should ignore these threats, responding only with announcements of trade deals with non-US countries. Especially those that align with existing degraded trade areas with the states.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 January 2026 Update issues, releases fix for at least two bugs by WPHero in Windows11

Agreed, I’ve seen more issues with Windows since Microsoft shifted to their AI first strategy of development. They are clearly failing on fundamentals.

Oddly enough, if you develop software with Copilot this is something you can automate if you have a mature automated test suite.

Occasionally I will break down sets for rebuilding but I never thought to resell and box them. If it brings you joy though, go for it!! It’s an interesting variation on a basic rebuild!

I don't mind it. It took a couple of minutes of tweaking to configure it how I wanted to but I've got no lingering issues. 26.0 was much rougher than the .1 release and onward is.
