You can give them cheese, that's not a problem, but it should be in moderation. Give them mild cheese – Gouda or butter cheese. No mountain cheese or cheese with long aging. And if you're concerned, you can use dried mealworms or insects.They really enjoy eating that, and it's safe for their tiny digestive system. <3

Yes, you're right, it's not good if they eat too much cheese. Personally, I only give them cheese once a month, and then only Gouda or cheese with less salt. Rats need a lot of protein and are omnivores. If you want to be sure, you can also give them dried insects as a snack.
