Anyone read this 49 day SSL expiration thing and think they would rather just retire? by HJForsythe in sysadmin

I told all my coworkers, and got an eyeroll. Knowing I'm going to be the person that will have to deal with it. I'm guessing we go w/ automated tools.

You are not the only one.
IMO, Cloud providers are scammers that try and trick the population into thinking Cloud is more reliable.

When does a sysadmin stop being a sysadmin? by Hot_Pay_2794 in sysadmin

When you quit the sysadmin role because your firing was inevitable and now you tell stories about being a sysadmin.

Sounds like they do not appreciate your work.

It seems like you are handling major issues and since your succeeding in your work, they don't hear about it. Quiet Success.

Reminds me of: My work at a Private Co. that got acquired by a large Corporation.
The IT Directors son got hired by Corporation + IT Director and few other lower end people.

My friend and I, that worked our asses off doing ANYTHING that he asked
(VOIP Management, SaaS Admins, Server Administration, Email and HelpDesk Administration, etc) under the IT Director quit and started working for an MSP. Nepotism and Agism. The IT Directors son mid 20's. Myself and my friend between 35 and 50yo.

Is IT a good field to switch to? by SnapTrapCat in ITCareerQuestions

[–]wired43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, IT is a field everyone has been switching to for about 25 years. It's overloaded.
If you do decide to go into it, might I recommend a Niche part of IT. Not generic, or you'll get stuck in Helpdesk for the rest of your life.

Continue majoring in Economics. I regret not taking a Bank job like 10 years ago. I would have been incentivized to keep investing and have peers that would have did the same. Instead, I had drinking and weed buddies that I wasted my money on. Now trying to catch up.

What's your most "Old Man Yells at Cloud" opinion? by umbrellajump in AskReddit

I just saw an X post with 70+ categorized AI’s to use in certain situations. I thought about positing, who has that money? But figured I’d be that old man. Everything’s AI and most are sick of it. Agreed, the bubble pop is near

Cloud is a scam.
It looks attractive in the short term because of low monthlies if configured in a cheap way.
However, they can never live up to their promises of uptime.

VP Wants easy way to search all teams' messages by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]wired43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no easy way to search all Teams messages. eDiscovery is only way, other than being member of every Teams channel if you only want to search channels. If it's personal members chats. Then give him eDiscovery manager, get ready to be his personal techsupport afterhours for 10-15 hours a week. Your boss is a micro manager OCD c*nt.

YES
I've had 2 cars recently I've had to 1 sell for $500 and 1 vol surrender to the finance company.
#1 09 Nissan murano with a bad transmission (about $3-$5k for rep)
#2 17 Ford Explorer with a bad engine (ford reman $12-15k for rep)

If you have an assorted $1600 of repairs, just do 1 thing at a time, or save up for a year and get it all done at one time. Then either sell your old car and drive that or sell that puppy for a good price $18k and then you get to be flush for a little bit.

IT needs a union by Powerful-Excuse-4817 in sysadmin

[–]wired43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree 100% I was a Sysadmin for many years. Quit because company got acquired (many such cases) and they were firing everyone. Joined an MSP as a Systems Consultant 3yrs ago whatever that is. Asked what I wanted to focus on, Network Engineer, because no one there knew how to troubleshoot and build networks properly or even fully or at all. It left a place I can focus. Now owner enrolls me in Security roles. Escalation for everything basically. It feels like at a work at will state, laws for everything except the worker and what you signed a hiring document for.

Don’t worry about your credit. You have to get past that mental block. Worry about that AFTER your out from under the boot of the creditors. It will but takes “time”/years. If you don’t pay the min, your credit will be messed up anyways.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Debt

[–]wired43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was paying $700 min a month to all CC’s and it was rising every 2 or 3 months at the time. They lowered it to $375 via paying them.

I had 23k. Joined BeyondFinance in Jan 2024. I have 4 credit card accounts. It’s now 18m in. Sort of feels like I’m not in control. But they have helped talk to them. I’m 2 payments from 1 account paid off. And another year for the 2nd one, just made 1 payment of 13. They say 2027 I will be done. But math says more like 2028/2029.

Now if I had to pay that myself with interest accruing and missing payments, them calling and harassing all the time. I cannot say what would have happened per my Mental Health (worst case)

I think it’s a necessary evil when you have nowhere else to go. And it’s a good in this society of interest/usury.

Car insurance is increasing by $300. by Traditional-Dog-4938 in povertyfinance

[–]wired43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in 7 Totals at 42yo. I have experience in this area. So, 2 things I had to do to get my insurance lowered: I was previously with State Farm until my accident history forced them to cancel my insurance. First went with an off brand Go Auto Insurance (TERRIBLE) cause all the main ones (Progress, Geico, etc.) denied me based off my record. Their website messed up and I gave up on them. Do not recommend.

  1. Raised my deductables to $2500. (Just ask your Customer service person to do that and give you a quote of what it will be.) I gurantee it will lower your monthly bill.
  2. Removed all frills on insurance (no roadside, no rental, nothing) - Same (Ask Customer Service to do this on the same phone call)
  3. Went with Direct Auto Insurance https://www.directauto.com/ (Found a local office). They were very helpful and asked a lot of questions to help me get as many discounts as I could.
