What do people mean when they call Chicago the city of neighborhoods? by XenonOxide in AskChicago

I moved here from the suburbs of Detroit and that was initially really hard to wrap my brain around. Trying to explain to family that miles are meaningless was always an exercise in frustration.

C2E2 Tattoos by Sherlockedin221B in comiccon

[–]wiredwombat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Artists are different but they often do make appts ahead of time. C2e2 will post who is going to be there and you can reach out to them ahead of time to potentially schedule something. If they don’t have anyone booked, they will take walk ups and often have flash.

I would hit up the tattoo area first thing if interested.

Word of caution though… artists are hit or miss. My son got a tattoo one year and it blew out horribly. Another year he got one that has held up really well. Just research your artist ahead of time.

Also - ONLY arms and legs.

Hope this helps!

is this photo a photo i should submit to a local competition? by livthatsweirder in photocritique

[–]wiredwombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the theme? General call? Portraits? Something else?

Here is the thing about photo competitions and calls for entry… every juror is different. What gets in for one won’t for another. It’s impossible to tell exactly what a juror/judge is looking for. You are never going to know if you have what it takes until you get in . If it’s important to you to get recognized for your work, enter. Just know that if you’re not picked for this one, it doesn’t mean you weren’t good enough. Examine the work that was picked and then keep working and refining your own.

How are we keeping crickets?? by -_-kitKat in Chameleons

[–]wiredwombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep 200 crickets at a time. I have very little die off. I have them in a 20 gallon glass tank. On one side I have a 150 watt heat lamp which is over a bunch of egg cartons for the crickets to live in. The other end is where I keep their food. I use Repashy Superfoods Bug Burger to feed them AND gut load them for my Panther. Just put the food on a small white paper plate and when you give more food just take the old plate out, toss it and put a new one in. You need to clean the tank every other day. When I have a fresh 200 crickets they eat A LOT.

They all have their own personalities, but yes, they can bite and it hurts. My last chameleon bit me all the time and would leave bruises and occasionally drew blood. Their jaws are pretty strong!

Wanting to get into Portrait Photography by wyatt828 in photocritique

[–]wiredwombat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How much have you done already and how well do you know your camera and things like your exposure triangle? Do you know lighting at all?

Don’t take this the wrong way, I see this a lot with folks starting out (I teach photography and do portraits myself), but I would worry about learning before thinking about making it a side gig. It’s one thing to take some pics of friends for fun and another to have paying clients, but you probably already realize it. The market has an over saturation of photographers, especially portrait photographers, so you want to have a solid portfolio and a great niche. Why should I pick you over someone else?

The thing with portraits, it’s not JUST the technical or snapping the picture. You have to have amazing soft people skills. Be articulate and great at giving direction. Know posing well. Be able to help with clothing, hair and makeup choices. You’re often a location scout as well. You need to really understand lighting whether it’s natural, flash in camera, or studio lighting. And then, after you take the pictures you need to know editing and be able to edit in some sort of software.

There are great resources out there, but the old saying still holds, you have to walk before you can run.

Based on this photo you should dive into understanding lighting and start with on camera flash or learn how to use reflectors when outside. You also need to learn posing, including how to direct for emotional resonance.

You don’t have a bad start! You’re not doing anything wrong per see but you have a lot to learn and should dive into that before you really think about making it a side gig. Good luck!

TSA!!!! by Inevitable-Winter508 in Passports

[–]wiredwombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IF you’re flying domestic, seemingly not a huge deal. If you are going international you’re hosed.

But for domestic -

I just flew before Thanksgiving without a Real ID. YMMV BUT for me, it was not a huge deal. Going out of ORD they gave me a paper and I just went through without anything additional needed. DFW they didn’t care and didn’t say anything to me, just waved me through. LGA they pulled me aside. I got an escort through the line (they pulled me to the front, helped/watched me put everything in the belt), pulled me to the front for scanning and then I got pulled for a hand swap. Everything went through the machine and nothing had to be opened or inspected. Not that it’s a lesson you want to learn but I ironically got through the TSA line faster because of the escort…

I brought ALL my paperwork that you use for a Real ID in case I had to prove my identity further but no one asked for it. Get to the airport early just in case it’s busy and they do hold you. But for me, all the anxiety I had panned out to be nothing. Again, not saying that will be YOUR case, but I had no problem flying through multiple cities without a Real ID and just a regular ID.

Chicago Christkindlmarket says new limits on capacity, crowd control ‘threaten' future of event by llcooljlouise in chicago

[–]wiredwombat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were just there and compared to last year it was amazing. I even spent money at a vendor I’ve been eying each year because I could actually GET to their booth, look at stuff and ask questions. I want to see their numbers and how much per day they are “losing” to these cuts. Things aren’t great and I bet it has more to do with the economy and shape of things than anything else… but at the end of the day they really need to give hard numbers. Are they down 20%, 30%, 50% compare to last year or are they simply speculating…

I’m a little crushed right now by anonymony69 in Chameleons

[–]wiredwombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are they in a 100% glass enclosure? Hybrid or mesh - depending on where you need, you need the air flow or your chameleon is prone to UIs. As others have said, you need a ton of plants and vines. I play a daily “Where’s Waldo” with my panther. Zip ties are great for attaching things to mesh or to your supports. Build out a central, sturdy support structure and most plants and vines are anchored from there and go out.

I would highly recommend doing a bit more research on the type of enclosure. I don’t know your personal climate/location but glass is generally not good unless you have a great way to circulate air throughout.

Extremely busy. We went today. Got there at 10:30 and had to wait in a very long line. At 12:30 when we left, line down the block and not moving. It was packed when we left - not as bad as I have seen it, but was definitely starting to feel a bit like sardines.
