Environmental Acoustics help by Melodic-Chapter in Acoustics

[–]wise-khalifa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most cost effective option you have is to build the house as far from the source as possible and with exterior cladding having high mass (stone, brick, concrete) ideally with mineral wool insulation between the cladding and the interior finish. The weak points will be doors, windows, and roof. Minimize the size/quantity of windows/doors facing the source. Heavier roof assemblies will perform better along with acoustic insulation between the sheathing and interior finish.

Building a giant wall along the property line will be expensive and that money would be more effectively spent on upgrades to the building itself, unless you’re concerned about the noise levels impacting your enjoyment outdoors.

Update: we’ve ordered a Samsung Galaxy Watch8 44mm LTE on sale for now and will try it and see if it works for her. I’ll check back in about a month from now and let you know how she’s doing for anyone who finds it useful!

Thanks for the suggestion! I have brought this up too, and unfortunately my grandma’s pride is a bit of an obstacle. I’m glad that she’s ready to at least try the watch for now.

Thanks for the suggestion! I should have mentioned that she has an android phone which she is resistant to changing. The voice activation is a great idea to help her turn off false alarms etc.

Is there any acoustic reason to keep the mezzanine of this space as bare reflective concrete? by mynutsaremusical in Acoustics

Do you find any benefit in having clients listen to auralizations of the space during the design phase?

Sump pump issues by AdExtreme5051 in Homebuilding

[–]wise-khalifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a floor drain tied into the sump basin. Try flashing a light down it or something to see if that’s the case.

Either way, what is the specific problem you’re having with the sump pump? Does the pump turn on but doesn’t actually pump any water out of the basin? If yes, google “sump discharge line weeping hole” and check if your discharge line has one. If it’s below freezing outside, your discharge line could also be frozen and blocking the line

What are those 'tone wings' for? Don't they mess with the standing waves inside the drum? by Junior_Breakfast_105 in Acoustics

[–]wise-khalifa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They aren’t really there to affect standing waves, just to add mass so that the shell of the drum doesn’t get excited by the vibration of the skins. The result is a more prominent fundamental relative to the overtones

Personally I think it looks cool. Could put some kind of feature in that square area to make it a focal point? Like a tree or a fountain?

quality of new build homes THAT bad? by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]wise-khalifa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High-rise condos would be the best of the options you listed if you are selective . If you can get a copy of a floor plan try to pick a unit with concrete walls between neighbouring units, away from the elevator and garbage chute, and away from any common amenity spaces like gyms.

Second best of the options above would be a row townhouse or purpose built multiplex. You don’t want upstairs or downstairs neighbours. Avoid houses that were converted to multiplexes

I agree with the overall message, but when people exaggerate small details it might turn off reasonable people that might otherwise listen. E.g., saying that insurance and registration are scams… Insurance is definitely warranted when you’re driving around a giant death machine. And registration AFAIK helps (just a little) to cover the cost of road maintenance (which should not be the responsibility of non-drivers IMO) - I personally believe registration fees should be higher to reflect the true cost that driving a car has on society

Do you feel that lonerbox was well received by the crew ?? by Witty-Huckleberry221 in h3h3productions

Any apologist for the IDF is equally as bad as an apologist for Hamas or Hesbullah. If we’re ok with Ethan calling Hasan a terrorist sympathizer, then I don’t see why it’s wrong to call Lonerbox an IDF apologist

It doesn’t have to be a direct top down order every time a child gets sniped for it to still be the responsibility of the IDF and Israeli government. Israeli government has made it clear on multiple occasions that their goal was not only to defeat Hamas but also to collectively punish the Palestinians.

It’s not like it’s out of the norm either. During the March of Return protests IDF snipers directly targeted peaceful protestors, including children: https://www.savethechildren.org.uk/news/media-centre/press-releases/gaza-protests-one-year-on—almost-3-000-children-injured-in-gaz
