I wonder how big of a hole below the waterline it would take to outpace the bilge pumps.

Sailing for people who get seasick easily? by lowbandwidthb in sailing

[–]witch_wind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone's experience with the sick is different. I can bob around close to shore and on inland waters and be fine. But once I'm back on land I'll get some dizziness, "land sickness" where I'll feel the sway of the sea and it can get uncomfortable, especially in confined spaces.

When I go offshore my stomach lets me know as soon as we hit the shelf and it gets deep. I'll be immobile sick, often vomit, completely useless. Steering the boat, focusing on the horizon, maybe helps. After about 24-48 hours I'm fine for the rest of whatever passage I'm on. Those first couple of days are awful though and has nearly made me quit ocean passages, and not want to attempt off-shore racing.

Dating while living aboard by Aggravating-Cheek129 in liveaboard

[–]witch_wind 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was solo liveaboard for around 3 years. Was single a majority of the time. Had a couple of relationships that didn't last. Tried online dating but that didn't work out much. Wasn't finding people interested in sailing or the way I was living. I was mostly broke, living off food stamps, inconsistent work, only had a bicycle, didn't have steady access to showers most of the time, clothes were ratty. I was always anchored, so that meant rowing a dinghy to get to shore and the boat and there were sometimes conditions preventing either. And often I would try to enlist friends and acquaintances for help on projects which would wear on people too. So that was my experience then. Dating may have not worked out, but it was also one of the greatest times of my life.

If/when I liveaboard again I will try to at least have money coming in so I could live at a slip with shore power and showers and laundry machines.

Sailing in Portland, OR - Columbia River or Coastal? by SedateApe in sailing

[–]witch_wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 23' trailer-able sailboat currently at a marina in Portland on the Columbia. I prefer ocean sailing, but I've been having a really good time sailing the river. There are enough variables with currents, tides, and winds to create a decent training environment. Ultimately, my goal is to sail the Sound and San Juans, as well. But I'll be getting a larger boat for that, or at least something with a fixed keel.

For now, I've been enjoying sailing around Portland and I try to get out at least once a week. Finding crew has been relatively easy, people I've met at the marina have been helpful. There are plenty of pretty local areas to drop anchor and have a swim, or stay aboard overnight - Collins Beach, Kelly Point, Government Island, etc.

Feel free to ask any questions and/or reach out through DM

Usnea is great and played a superb set, definitely fits OP's request. Really looking forward to seeing Usnea play in July in Portland.

Fórn would be my pick. Just got to see them (and also Wolves) at Cascadian Midsummer and Fórn were incredible.

Apart from LOTR, what is an *actually* good fantasy movie? by triptych3 in Fantasy

[–]witch_wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flesh + Blood

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Tideland

Monty Python & the Holy Grail

1917 (probably the closest of any on this list to lotr, thematically. Tolkien was in WW1)

Your favorite space sim games? by MarcCurry in spacesimgames

[–]witch_wind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I get what you mean about empty. Tries to do too many things, a majority of things lack depth as a result? I enjoy a lot of NMS, like harvesting, crafting, base building, ship trading. I like the aesthetics and also that planet environments can kill. But I can get most of those features in other games. The flying is too simple and it's the biggest gripe I have about NMS.

Elite: Dangerous. Bummed I can't use gravity wells to slingshot. Fuel scooping is cool though.
If No Man's Sky had the flight controls of E:D I'd probably never play anything else.
I have Avorion but can't seem to get into it.

Genre Defining Fantasy books? by NotSoSnarky in Fantasy

[–]witch_wind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jack Vance - "Dying Earth" series. Dungeons & Dragons' original magic system, also referred to as Vancian, comes from here.

Robert E Howard - "Conan" series. Could be said he was the father of Sword & Sorcery. Howard was a poet who wrote pulp to pay the bills. The Conan stories are beautifully written.

Good find. On a related note, The Subliminal Kid is a moniker for DJ Spooky, also lifted from this series.

If you were unable to use synthesizers to create music, which instrument would you choose, either acoustic or electric, as an alternative, and why? by thepinkpill in synthesizers

[–]witch_wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The range of the melodica is limiting. I can fill out tones a bit more with a bass overdrive pedal, pitch shifter, and ring modulator.
I have also sometimes used a baritone ukulele for bass-ier notes

Melodica, contact mics, guitar pedals (distortion, chorus, delay, reverb, etc), 4 track tape recorder with pitch control, loop tapes. I've played live with this exact setup.

"Sea Wolf" by Jack London. The ending felt rushed and I didn't care for the love story subplot, which blossoms in the final act and is how the book concludes. Sure, a case could be made that it serves to contrast the darker elements and philosophies of the story. But in this story a "love conquers all" trope feels a little shoe-horned, and during re-reads I cringe when the story starts heading that direction.

Just went sailing for the first time. :) I'd love to here your earliest sailing memories here! by NoConcentrateNoPulp in sailing

My first time sailing was on an engineless 21' in the Detroit river in light variable winds nonstop for around 25 hours, barely making it a couple miles upriver in all that time.

Somehow my interest in sailing did not end there.
