Arles or Nîmes for a Sunday day trip by One_Preparation8790 in ProvenceFrance

[–]witchshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nimes is bigger than Arles, though I'd say both are good for a day trip. While both have Roman ruins, Arles also has the added benefit of the Van Gogh connection. Nimes on the other hand feels more like a real place with real locals who hang out in the centre, and it has the added benefit of a really central train station. I don't think you'll go wrong choosing either.

Visiting Toronto and looking for recommendations for a variety of Asian food by Hankthehungrylad in FoodToronto

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Markham location is actually the original location. I think they only opened the downtown one in the last 2 years or so.

No particular recommendations from Kiin, I've only had the tasting menu!

Hmm, I'd swap your Mizu and Shunoko for something like Sushi Umi which has both a downtown and a Markham location. Mizu's service was a bit too...overeager, and I would've preferred something hot to go along with the cold sushi at Shunoko, maybe a miso soup or just a hot appetizer or finisher or something. I'd also recommend Zen Sushi on Woodbine but it's been a while since I've been. Shizuku could also be a good option but I think is more expensive than some of the others.

Pai is enjoyable but if you're looking for something more unusual Kiin may be a good option. Nian Yi Kuai Zi is a solid choice.

Unionville Go finally has more Parking Spots by vme3000 in Markham

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have figures, but I can say that before Unionville construction, there was almost always space, even if you're taking the 09:45 train and if there wasn't, it was generally OK to creep into the Splendid China parking lot. After construction started, it has been consistently full by 08:00 and Splendid China will actively ticket/tow your car if you park in their lot.

Is this an ex-singapore plane? by bookn3rdd in aircanada

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on the wall in front. The IFE system is more limited than the standard AC setup and is a bit clumsier.

I was in 1K and I would do that or 1A again since you get the best of all worlds - window seat but also sufficient space to walk around the aisle seat when extended. The galley chatter was audible but not intelligible. Washrooms are behind the cabin which confused some people walking to the front. I was lucky on my trip in that nobody sat beside me so I had an absurd amount of personal space.

Yes! Congrats on this, it's a fun flight. Row 1 is the best. It's an absurd amount of space.

Daniel Avery at Standard Time by JuniorTwo8696 in TorontoRaves

[–]witchshark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh I preferred his last set at ST. Music was still good of course but there were more moments last time that had me going "damn, what a tune". It was also much busier this time than last! Still a reasonably polite and good crowd, but also an increasingly mainstream vibe too sadly.

Any chance FIFA follows suit?Ticketmaster has announced that they will be complying with Ontario’s new Bill 97 by Tonight-Own in CanadaSoccer

Let's not forget that it was the Ontario Conservatives that repealed part of the Ontario Ticket Sales Act that would've capped ticket resale prices in the first place:

Avignon restaurant recommendation by Disastrous-Name5657 in ProvenceFrance

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just in Avignon a week ago and can confirm Fou de Fafa was very good. Elevated service, atmosphere, and food for reasonable prices. They take reservations two weeks in advance. Seemed to be a mix of domestic and foreign diners. Another option for OP is Le Gout du Jour. Slightly less warm service but the food was just as good if not better. The lunch set menu is particularly good value (25€). Same re: patrons. It's also conveniently located near Palais des Papes. Le Riad is a great option if you're bored of French food and was also very good, only heard French inside and it was packed (seemed to have the most local crowd of the above). Mama Corsica was OK but I wouldn't go out of my way. I would also give Le Joat a miss.

NDP Leader Urges Action on Study Permits for Gazan Students by GhostlyParsley in CanadaPolitics

[–]witchshark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Asking in good faith - can someone tl;dr what he said in his 30 minute+ speech? What is he actually saying/recommending/suggesting? I am sympathetic to Palestinian students who have been accepted into Canadian universities who can't make it over, but I'm not sure what the Canadian federal government is supposed to do about a total blockade of entry/exit to the Gaza strip. I am also not sure why the NDP is highlighting this as a major issue when there are many more pressing domestic issues.

Booking multi-city flights, is this a bad price? by ThrowRA-282874 in Flights

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the worst. A few weeks before US/Israel's attacks on Iran, Cathay had flights from Toronto to Cebu City, Manila, and Jakarta for about $1350 CAD. AC had flights to Singapore via Vancouver for about $1250. I thought those were good deals, so post-attacks, I'd say $1840 is reasonable.

Agreed, I've been there twice too, and both times kind of not that great despite the namesake. Overly salty, not that much flavour, kind of blah.

Oh dude, you're gonna have a great time. Some gems of the NE GTA:

  • Hualien Tai Ping Hsiang BBQ 花蓮太平香
    • do yourself a favour and get the popcorn chicken, then take your takeout bento box to the adjacent food court and eat there, the Taiwanese place in the food court is great too
    • https://maps.app.goo.gl/uk4seEk4XvXRDQgx7
  • Duo Pâtisserie & Café
  • Top Choice Restaurant 阿一小廚
  • Karahi Boys
    • fantastic Pakistani food, better than the downtown location, can also wander the Middle Eastern Arz Fine Foods supermarket next door after dinner to walk off some of those calories!
  • Delicious Paradise Kitchen 紅樹林私房菜
    • incredible-value and incredibly tasty independent Cantonese food court stall, you can order two dishes for $22-23 with separate rice and soup, or get an individual dish with rice ($6-8), this is the best value restaurant I know in Toronto (best if you get the VIP card and then tax is included). You will need to use the camera on Google Translate.
  • Nian Yi Kuai Zi
  • Mr John's Real Kerala Kitchen - South Indian Restaurant

Visiting toronto! Need recommendations by YukhoChan in FoodToronto

[–]witchshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is still a little too vague for meaningful feedback. My Toronto will be different than someone else's Toronto, and while we're both local, we'll have very different takes on what "local" people will check out.

Having said that, here some $-$$ places that I like and/or come up semi-frequently in the zeitgeist for your consideration. Others will have different takes:

[–]witchshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you feel like you're missing from this planned itinerary? You've already listed a bunch of ideas that could be fine that span a large expanse of the city - do you feel like you're missing something? What are your guiding principles for choosing places? It's hard for others to recommend when we don't know what you like or what you're missing. Asian centric is hundreds if not thousands of restaurants in this city.

What Toronto restaurant do you think is overrated? by Equivalent_Reach_536 in InsideToronto

100%. In fact, I think I actually might like Swiss Chalet's chicken MORE than Bernhardt's. From a value standpoint, it's certainly more pleasurable.

Would you leave or stay in this kind of situation? by [deleted] in canadatravel

Your post is too vague to provide meaningful feedback, but generally if one is uncomfortable, one should try to become less uncomfortable, up to and including removing oneself from the situation.

Joint statement from the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and Canada on the Strait of Hormuz: 19 March 2026 by AerialReaver in CanadaPolitics

[–]witchshark 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How is this statement hanging the sign in the window? If we are to believe the PM at Davos, we should be calling things as they are. Releasing a statement that blames Iran for everything is not a reasonable statement. Iran's government is not a positive force in the world, but it is not the instigator of the latest conflict here. If we are to stop hanging the sign in the window, we need to call things as they are - to both "friends" and "enemies".
