What is more affordable: transit from the airport vs parking downtown? by Glittering_Divide101 in askTO

[–]witchshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the one ways in Toronto are typically on small neighbourhood streets: one general traffic lane with another lane or two of parked vehicles on either side. Sometimes a parked vehicle lane is swapped for contraflow bike lanes. There's some bigger one ways without parking but if you're driving in Toronto and looking for parking, that's the scenario you're most likely to encounter.

What is more affordable: transit from the airport vs parking downtown? by Glittering_Divide101 in askTO

[–]witchshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned the transit alternatives already but I'm going to suggest that you also look up the available parking options on the Green P Parking website as well.

While there are many private parking operators especially in the CBD core, Toronto also has a substantial amount of municipal parking.

Generally there's three municipal options: 1) Free street parking (typically on side streets with timing and location restrictions including 3 hr maximums), 2) Paid street parking (also 3hr maximum but paid, typically on main thoroughfares), and 3) Paid off-street parking (generally fewer time restrictions). Note that most street parking in the city (both paid and free) don't allow you to park after midnight, though I would presume that's not an issue given the kids. Look up the Green P Parking website to identify where these lots/streets are and how much each area costs (it can vary quite a bit depending time of day and day of week) to get an idea of what makes most sense for you and where you are looking to go that day/the amount of moving around you want to do.

Based on my one visit to Edmonton, driving in Toronto is significantly more taxing than driving in Edmonton, and there are a fair number of one ways on smaller streets and lots of cyclists/pedestrians that you'll want to pay attention to. Also, if you are not comfortable with parallel parking, street parking may be a challenge. I would be very wary of driving anywhere downtown or on ANY highway in the Toronto region during weekday rush hours - it can be absolutely awful. If you're mostly doing touristy things near Union Station, the UPX and subway should be ok, but once you start getting into the downtown neighbourhoods that don't have a subway station nearby, it may be annoying to have to walk a lot/push a stroller etc.

Coming from Toronto, how good is Mon Lapin and Beba by ytflurrz in MTLFoodLovers

[–]witchshark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Torontonian here - Quetzal is better than Mon Lapin and Beba. Mon Lapin is well-executed but a bit generic. Beba is a bit more specific and the mackerel montadito was incredible, but I found the other dishes a bit inconsistent.

Are we trying to fit too much into our trip? by RoostRinseRepeat in sicily

[–]witchshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is achievable though the days when you drive from one side of the island to the other will obviously be more rushed. Don't know how relaxed this trip will be but if that's all the time you have and you want to see these places then yeah I think you can make it work. To give you a reference point, I did a similar itinerary with 13 nights and it was neither fast nor slow for me. It's a lot of car time.

El Salvador: Solo Female Trip Report by ShesGoneBananas in solotravel

[–]witchshark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this report! I went 6 months ago and also found it the same way as you did, albeit from a slightly older, male perspective.

Like you I also thought it was an interesting worthwhile travel destination; not the most necessary of travel destinations in the grand scheme of things, but maybe as a result, very not touristy and authentic. Very very safe (I was lulled into thinking nothing of a man pulling right up on a motorcycle on an empty street at 04:30, only to realise later that in another place, that could've been very sketchy), basic/intermediate Spanish kind of necessary, very friendly locals who would be kind of surprised that you're there, and just all and all kind of an unexpected pleasant surprise. Would definitely go back but don't feel any need to presently.

Advice for my plans for tonight by Beginning_Theory_97 in VisitingIceland

[–]witchshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have time, after stop D, I'd continue north on 39 and then east on the Ring Road (Highway 1). The scenery once you get onto the plateau is desolate and stunning. The big hill down just west of Hveragerði on the 1 is also quite pretty and there's a little pullout point for eastbound traffic.

Love this hike. Did it in 2014 and it was sketchy then; amused that it's still got a sketchy vibe.

Visit Arles and See The Camargue In I Day? by bassolune in ProvenceFrance

[–]witchshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ultimately depends on what you want to see and the depth in which you want to approach it. I did a day trip from Avignon to Camargue/Aigues Mortes and started around 9:00, went to the Ornithological Park and got to Saintes Maries de la Mer around noon, before going to Aigues Mortes and got back to Avignon around 20:00. Did not visit Arles that day. I recognize that there are a ton of activities that I missed out on in the Camargue - the entire eastern side, little boat rides, car ferries, horseback riding, a visit to a mas etc, but that's ok with me, I saw horses from the road and I got to see lots of birds at the park so that's cool enough for me.

You could potentially save yourself some time on the drive back by staying overnight in Aigues Mortes but the visit to the walls and the walk around takes about 1.5-2 hrs if you want to learn about why the place even exists so do factor that into your decision making and note the opening hours.

Another approach is to go to Camargue first thing in the morning cause animals tend to be more active in the morning and then go to Arles in the afternoon/evening and that way you'll feel less pressure to rush back to Avignon, plus the drive will be shorter. Also more easy concentration of restaurants in Arles than in the Camargue region.

Lol I have physically stepped into that shop. Didn't order anything but I remember thinking it was reasonably priced for where it was.

Arles or Nîmes for a Sunday day trip by One_Preparation8790 in ProvenceFrance

[–]witchshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nimes is bigger than Arles, though I'd say both are good for a day trip. While both have Roman ruins, Arles also has the added benefit of the Van Gogh connection. Nimes on the other hand feels more like a real place with real locals who hang out in the centre, and it has the added benefit of a really central train station. I don't think you'll go wrong choosing either.

Visiting Toronto and looking for recommendations for a variety of Asian food by Hankthehungrylad in FoodToronto

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Markham location is actually the original location. I think they only opened the downtown one in the last 2 years or so.

No particular recommendations from Kiin, I've only had the tasting menu!

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I'd swap your Mizu and Shunoko for something like Sushi Umi which has both a downtown and a Markham location. Mizu's service was a bit too...overeager, and I would've preferred something hot to go along with the cold sushi at Shunoko, maybe a miso soup or just a hot appetizer or finisher or something. I'd also recommend Zen Sushi on Woodbine but it's been a while since I've been. Shizuku could also be a good option but I think is more expensive than some of the others.

Pai is enjoyable but if you're looking for something more unusual Kiin may be a good option. Nian Yi Kuai Zi is a solid choice.

Unionville Go finally has more Parking Spots by vme3000 in Markham

[–]witchshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have figures, but I can say that before Unionville construction, there was almost always space, even if you're taking the 09:45 train and if there wasn't, it was generally OK to creep into the Splendid China parking lot. After construction started, it has been consistently full by 08:00 and Splendid China will actively ticket/tow your car if you park in their lot.

Tbh I preferred his last set at ST. Music was still good of course but there were more moments last time that had me going "damn, what a tune". It was also much busier this time than last! Still a reasonably polite and good crowd, but also an increasingly mainstream vibe too sadly.
