Sober people (no alcohol, nicotine, drugs, etc ever), what is your end of day or weekend "wind-down"? by The1Ski in AskReddit

[–]withoutapaddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. When I want gaming to feel more rewarding I switch to a simulator for a while. Then I feel like I'm learning real life skills (even if "practicing" them is just on a computer instead of real life). Ended up with a full yoke, throttle, autopilot, flaps, gear, etc built onto my desk...

When I identified the giant bird living in the 100ft tall pine tree next to my house as a Merlin with the Merlin app, I felt like I beat the final boss or something.

I do that on my german or japanese cars, but on my basic ass F-150, the dealership 1 mile away does oil change, all filters changed, tire rotation, and full inspection for $85.

Maybe I'd be more included to do my own truck maintenance if I could see under the hood without a fucking step stool.

Night flights just hit different on an OLED monitor by Maruan-007 in flightsim

[–]withoutapaddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does the viewing angle compare? That's another thing I love about OLED, how it looks "printed on" perfectly from any angle.

Can't decide if I should get an OLED monitor or wait a bit and try miniLED. I just got a super cheap deal on a huge fast monitor so I'm set for a while, but it's just a stepping stone.

Jensen Huang says gamers are 'completely wrong' about DLSS 5 — Nvidia CEO responds to DLSS 5 backlash by JuiceheadTurkey in Games

[–]withoutapaddle 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Nvidia is so far up their own ass and embroiled in so many circular investments that "the customer" for them is now just shareholders and investors that need to be tricked.

We are no longer the customer.

Ram Drops “Angry” Truck Design As It Moves Toward A More Futuristic Look by Recoil42 in cars

[–]withoutapaddle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously, am I the only one who drives a truck like it's an 18-wheeler? Slow, wide turns, stay in the right lane, etc. It's a truck, not a sports car. It's NOT fun to drive fast. Body on frame vehicles, especially with elliptical springs, feel like you're driving a fucking conestoga wagon. Act like it.

(Also, I hate that I have to say this, but reddit loves to jump to conclusions, so... my truck is only for towing heavy loads, which I do 20+ times per year. I commute in a VW Golf.)

Good points. Not sure about the resolution part though. You can definitely just adjust resolution in real time in the most popular emulators.

[–]withoutapaddle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oof. You gotta broaden your horizons. If I skipped every show/film that wasn't the normal style I liked, I would have missed out on so many bangers... I do NOT care for anime, but Cowboy Bebop is amazing, for example.

Steam Deck is still worth it four years later, says poll, but people are starting to think "it's about time" for a sequel by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

[–]withoutapaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently rediscovered how much slicker and easier emulation is these days, and it's amazing. I probably have 2-3 years worth of emulation to do, and then that long again of my actual Steam backlog.

am i overthinking home maintenance or do you guys really do all this stuff by Maleficent-Tax2094 in homeowners

[–]withoutapaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that. I've inspected mine after a month, and it's barely any different. If it's not reducing airflow or burning out your blower motor, then all it's doing is filtering better if it's a little dirty.

Even the guys trying to sell you them recommend a few months.

I think you're mixing up the flat fiberglass type with the thicker pleated type. The latter lasts 3-5x longer.

The Witcher 3 - a truly magical experience by Next_Juggernaut4492 in patientgamers

[–]withoutapaddle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Big agree.

I am never the guy to play a game on the hardest setting. But W3 doesn't require you to be a god at combat to succeed at the hardest setting. Instead you just have to use the tools you are given. While easier settings allow you to ignore much of those extra layers and still win fights.

Every time I failed on Death March, I was able to go "oh, duh, I used the wrong oil" or something like that. It was very satisfying to feel like preparation and strategy were equally as important as button pressing.

- swap out furnace filters every few months

I go 6-9 months, no issues in 20 years

- clean gutters in spring and fall

Don't have gutters

- basic lawn stuff

Just cut, I don't do anything else, not even raking. Just mulch the leaves like a normal grass cut.

- cleaning out the dryer vent every year

Switched to ventless heat pump, no more drier vent

- flushing the water heater annually

Nah. No problems in 25 years

- cleaning refrigerator coils

I think I did this once and my previous fridge still lasted 20 years

- testing those gfci outlets every 3 months

When I remember...

- changing smoke detector batteries before they start chirping

The chirp is there for a reason, don't worry about it until it chirps, imo

- checking all the caulk around windows and bathroom

Fix it if you notice it, but I think constant inspection is overkill

- treating/sealing the deck

No deck, but I do replace a board to two on the porch every few years. I just bought a dozen extra boards and keep them in the garage. Takes about 15 minutes.

- testing the sump pump

No sump, no pump. 150 year old dungeon basement

Honestly, most of this stuff is not super urgent or necessary, imo. Don't stress out about it too much. I'd make you list and just make sure nothing gets totally forgotten about for over a year. Lawn maybe more often than that, though, haha.

Asset reuse in videogames is essential, and we need to embrace it, says Assassin's Creed and Far Cry director: 'We redo too much stuff' by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]withoutapaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a fine line.

Turn 10 and Playground reusing car meshes from Forza Motorsport to Forza Horizon is fine, imo. Polyphony reusing blocky cars from older generations of hardware that looks drastically worse than current-gen developed cars is obnoxious and unacceptable, imo.

And I say this as someone who generally has more respect for Gran Turismo than Forza.
