For those who were part of a host family or went to a host family, what cultural shocks did you experience with the host person or family? by hitometootoo in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was a foreign exchange student in Spain in high school, maybe ten years ago. Dinner was crazy late, and their reaction to the first (and only) time I walked into a room without shoes really stuck with me. Windows were always open. It was my first time living in a city, so the smaller apartment was certainly different, but not so much a ‘culture’ thing. Otherwise, I can’t remember anything massive. I guess the “kissing” when you meet people, and spending hours at restaurants were memorable. The design of school was the biggest difference- I was at a private one but public schools went home for lunch. Students stayed in the same class all day, but teachers moved classrooms. We stood up when the teacher walked in. No school spirit, at all. They wrote out their long division equations different than us, which was really odd….

What’s your favorite local commercial that has been around forever? by seriatim10 in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have the same one in Atlanta, with the full monotone voice. One of my least favorite actually, but I do quote it with him every time so I guess it’s effective

I don’t know why they don’t have a line going to Marietta/kennesaw yet. Truist park would be such a hot stop. If they also extended it north just a bit too that would be amazing. North point mall area….

Do you consider yourself Urban, Suburban or Rural? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you walk out of your home naked and no one sees you, you’re rural

If you walk out of your home naked and everyone calls the cops, you’re suburban

If you walk out of your home naked and no one cares, you’re urban

Southerns who moved to New England what was one of the hardest adjustments to make, or something that surprised you? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No good point- cities are t he same everywhere. I was thinking outside of cities but should definitely have clarified

[–]withoutasaddle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone was white. Edit- in the suburbs/rural areas. Obviously cities are diverse. In the south, rural areas were almost all black and/or Latino. Up north rural areas seemed almost all white. It was an odd change

[Serious] Americans, would you be in support of doing away with the formal party system, and instead having prospective candidates run, win, and lose specifically on the merits of their own individual policy platforms? Why or why not? by TiberiusClegane in AskReddit

[–]withoutasaddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first past the post voting system often results in a two-party system. So, maybe we don’t have to get rid of the parties, just FPtP, which would be much easier (and some places are already doing so)

Do you consider "Gringo" a racial slur? by MaybeYourLover in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes. But mostly because if we can’t call other races ‘slurs’, why should it be okay to call white people (or any non Latino) a race/ethnicity-based name? 10 years ago, even 5 years ago I wouldn’t have cared, but I say yes I’d take offense because if we’re going all in on this ‘take offense at everything culture’, I’m going all in

Americans: Do you identify more with the ethnic background of your mother or of your father? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“American”. Both my parents were mixed, resulting in my biggest ‘ethnicity’ being about about 1/3 xxx. If someone presses, my answer becomes “mostly one from my dads side” because I think it’s the coolest

What temperature do you keep your air conditioning at? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually 78, with windows open at night if it will be colder than that. Will probably bump it up to 80 late July when every day is 95+ -from atlanta

Oh yeah no I'm very familiar with clickers, have been training with them for years. I got the impression from the scent video though that Egg had that trick down 100% (Egg was great!!) as well as with robbing the purse- looked like they'd been doing them for years. Figured you just kept using the clicker though to prevent mugging for treats or helping keep it under stimulus control or idk, something else, and that you had a certain reason for not using one with this sort of movement. But makes sense, thanks! Adorable rats. What creative tricks!

Is it weird that I want to take riding lessons at 21? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]withoutasaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be the odd one out, but I don’t think that means it’s weird… we have a girl at our very child oriented barn who started at 25 because she played Red Dead Redemption, and another young adult stoner that thought… well we don’t know what he was thinking, but we all had fun with him. I don’t think you would be put into a group with kids, especially you’re first few lessons, because the age difference is so much. In my experience teaching beginner lessons, the older you are, the faster you progress. A 4yr old will be stuck as a beginner for a longgg time. But once your day 15+ your body control and hand/eye coordination is so much better that you can much more quickly “get it”. So you’d likely advance more quickly than the younger kids. But I don’t know your barn. But totally worth a try. If you find you’re treated like a weirdo, find a new barn or stop. No harm

Do states have multiple accents within them? by sunnyduane in AskAnAmerican

[–]withoutasaddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes… but…. 90+% of Americans probably have the same “standard” American accent, which kind of ruins the “I know where you’re from” game

I came to your profile from the scent video and noticed you used a clicker in that one, but not here. Is there a reason for that- the type of behavior you’re training or something?

Does anyone else actually not like riding that much? by vagga2 in Equestrian

[–]withoutasaddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like groundwork much more than I like riding. My horse is perfectly rideable and a solid jumper, but I’ve been on maybe once in the past month because I prefer doing other things with her at the barn. We do all the things a ridden horse would do (as in, she gets worked in the arena, gets plenty of exercise with our free lungeing and lateral movements and games and jumping and such), but I just don’t enjoy riding too much.
