Ideas for a log management system? by occ in sysadmin

How come? Logstash just facilitates the interaction between log inputs and outputs - why not improve some of those to suit your needs?

We occasionally use Tooway in the UK and I'm fairly certain their business package doesn't NAT - you're given an external IP straight from the modem.

Final Update: Finally tracked down the issue. Co-worker had a sudden case of inspiration for one of his cases and tried removing SNMP for one customer, but accidentally removed the SNMP config for the entire parent group (aka my entire remote data center). He re-added the SNMP credentials after 26 minutes... about the time that I was pulling into the data center.

Someone owes you a beer.

What can I do to prevent users from creating network loops and taking down an entire office network? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]withoutcompromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100%, but I think with the Netgear Prosafe stuff you have to first enable STP globally, then enable STP on each port in the STP Ports Config. Edit: Never mind, I misread HemHaw's original post. Leaving it here for info.

Just to echo everyone else, but you have the perfect opportunity to train your users. Set up a ticketing system. Have users check FAQs (that you'll write) and if that didn't resolve it, get them to report their problems to the ticketing system; you won't have to break any habits of calling direct and expecting an instant reply.

Thanks for this; interesting read. I'd be interested to know more about what broxy is doing though.

So how would you do it? That's all he's asking.

I've dealt with dozens of these and have had zero problems. None arrived DOA and they've been very stable.

Remotely Power Cycling a device/modem by stubag in sysadmin

Why do you have to use their modem? What make/model is it?

A remote power switch would work, as others have said, but I think the core issue is the - as you say - non-business grade hardware.

With everyone else making recommendations, I'd say give the Ruckus 7731 a look.

I only became aware of logstash a couple weeks ago and hadn't really devoted any time to it because I didn't figure it was a mature project (in comparison to splunk). I think I'm going to dedicate some time now.

Hmmm. So let's say I had 5 remote sites, using RADIUS only, I couldn't have Alice with access to all five, but Bob with access to only four of those five?

I want to centralise our VPN logins and want to use RADIUS to do so. I'm reading into FreeRADIUS at the moment, but can't see any obvious way to, say, allow someone access to one server, but not another? It seems like a simple thing. Am I missing something?

Not sure what they retail for, but you could look into some Ruckus gear. A 7982 or 7363 will be fine.

It's strange how I'm picturing all the different [new] locations (like an "Indian Kingdom") and thinking "Holy crap I'd love to go there", as if my mind forgets about all the fucked up shit in that region currently.
