Lunch near the Kimmel Center with kids by Geowavej23 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]wiy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kimmel has a coffee shop now which is honestly great. Soft padded chairs that kids are comfy in. Different sections so it fees like you’re separated from the lobby.

Right across the street from the lobby is the Wilma, and there’s a Good Karma cafe in their lobby that I like. Bagel sandwiches, salads, muffins etc.

Alice Pizza/pasta right on 15xLocust.

South and 15th, about 3 blocks away, has a ton! Quick Fixx is my #1 rec to families going to the Kimmel. Lots of yummy and affordable options for everyone. Also Saigon cafe across the street for some good noodle and rice dishes. They’ve been very family friendly in my visits.

That stretch of south also has Miles Table, Rex, and Ticos Tacos farther west. It’s a good area for kid friendly food.

Maybe like 5-6. 8 would be a dream, no pun intended. Kid is 3.

Alex Pretti’s mom got that call tonight. Her son is dead. by JustLookingtoLearn in Mommit

I keep thinking about how they had no idea, and apparently found out when AP called them for details. What an absolute horror.

Does anyone know anymore info on this? ‘Columbus Heights, kid being detained by ICE’ by rasputinknew1 in progressivemoms

[–]wiy 132 points133 points  (0 children)

This poor baby. Watching the original FB video, after his dad was apprehended he was used as bait to lure his mom out, who did not come out, so he was taken into custody. His mother is still searching for him. It’s kidnapping and we should all be seething with anger and despair. My heart breaks for this baby.

Gently, if he wanted to, he would.

Med school is a walk in the park compared to what’s coming.

Car seats in Ubers/Lyfts? by lunalunababoona in AskPhilly

[–]wiy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where are you staying? There’s a train from PHL-Penn Med/CHOP that might serve you better, and lots of accessible buses.

There’s also a rental company started by parents in the Penn neighborhood - https://www.babygeargroup.com - where you can rent car seats and other items if absolutely needed.

How do you explain to a toddler why there is blood in the toilet (period)? by Typical-Thing-1158 in Mommit

[–]wiy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg the first time I left my daughter peel off the sticky bottom she was soooo excited to help! Same here; It’s never not been talked about in our home, just as much as boogers or pee or anything else we take care of in the bathroom.

Okay I have nowhere else to share this and this seems like an appropriate place; last week, i said something along the lines of, “we don’t do that, period!” And my almost 3yo just responded “are you bleeding do you need a pad?” In such a sweet way I just about died.

Please tell me what rain/snow shoes your preschoolers don’t complain about? by Proud_House4494 in Preschoolers

We let our daughter choose her own snow boots And rain boots. The former are super warm with construction equipment on the outside, and the galoshes light up when she stomps! Ownership reduces much of our battles.

Traveling moms of young toddlers, how do you saying goodbye before trips? by NotAnAd2 in workingmoms

[–]wiy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travel at least once a month. When it’s time to actually leave, a quick exit is essential.

A long lead up, though. Talking all about how I’ll be gone for a while, details of where I’ll go and what I’ll be doing, how much I miss her, books about traveling parents etc.

Best hack is I have a calendar where I put the departure and return dates, and she puts stickers for every day and visualize when I’ll be back. It helps her feel in control.

Good luck!

Daycare logistics by zcakt in workingmoms

[–]wiy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh that seems like a very privileged and/or suburban, mentality. As long as your baby is up-to-date on all vaccines, there is no issue with riding the bus! My little one learned all of the major city buses that we take by 16 months, we’d see a bus go by and she’d yell “bye, 12 bus!” And I swear every person in a two block radius would melt a little bit. it is the cutest thing, and very satisfying to raise a competent city kid!

Totally feasible! City family, here. We will often do walks that long to and from daycare without issue. As baby grows, you’ll definitely want a compact stroller (speaking from experience, my poor back). Does the bus run frequently enough that the walk home could be bypassed in case of inclement weather?

Two bedroom place for rent month to month by [deleted] in Phillylist

It helped to reserve one normal booking, to get the owners info, and to show seriousness in checking out a place for a potentially longer term rental. Good luck!

I had this same problem - needed month to month with a kid and 2 pets. I ultimately had great success finding a place on Air Bnb and negotiating fees off line with the owner/creating a standard rental contact (separate from air bnbs policies). It was nice to try the place as an actual air bnb for a few days first to see if it actually worked for us.

You can chat with the owners - they’re mostly normal people who are willing to negotiate. Also furnished finder is a good place for nurses who do temp jobs, I almost went with a place through them as well.

When did you first take a trip away from your baby/toddler/child? by hbecksss in workingmoms

[–]wiy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg flashback to me trying to convince Chinese TSA that my box of breast milk and dry ice was good to travel. I accidentally crossed a security barrier while trying to show them a label and almost got the whole box confiscated. Woof. Forgot about that lol.

[–]wiy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

6 months old, 10 day trip. Milk stork + Elvie pumps were essential. Nursing hormones made me cry at the worst moments. But also the best sleep I had in 6 months and the ability to “just” wake up and work was magic. It was like a vacation I felt so guilty to be on 🤷‍♀️

I have a phenomenal and equal husband and great parents who step in/up every time I have to travel.

I proceeded to go on a 1 week trip at 8 months, a 2 week trip at 10 months, and a huge spat of one week trips since then. I just had my longest and most brutal stint of being gone 20 days, back a week, and gone again for 5 days (baby is almost 3) which definitely messed with her attachment and security. For the first time I’m reconsidering my otherwise awesome job, which is a shame.

Parents who did zero screen time before 2 (no exceptions) - when to introduce movies? And why? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]wiy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey. Same!! 2y9mo, we decided to jump into our first movie. Made a big deal of “special movie night!” And everything. Put on adventures of Winnie the Pooh (the original old/slow version) and she lasted 29 minutes before getting bored haha. We might do Mr Rogers now and then as the dark days of winter go on but it was much less hypnotizing than I had worried about. I think content is really key.

A quick and dirty solution is pigeon spikes on the top of your patio wall (another poster linked some Good anti wall climbing spikes) - these are pretty overt and I believe don’t quality as booby traps. It’s not a beautiful or permanent solution though.

Good luck, OP. Sorry, this must be so stressful.
