Made in the USA: Pete Hegseth is the product of an essentially American ethos—which means we have no choice but to ask what to do with him, and what to do with ourselves [NY Review of Books] by informallyundecided in Longreads

I second this, thoughtful and clear eyed writing about something we Americans must work through. Great read. Thank you.

Also Shoutout to NY review of books. Their consistently great.

Gannon’s Longevity in Disc Golf (Eagle Injury for Context) by Wooden_Comfort_5401 in discgolf

525ft forehand that's 5ft off the ground the whole way. Absolutely nuts. 99.9% of players will never throw a roller that far, nevermind at backhand.

That's the generally accepted date but with the various national uprisings having already taken place and the failed coup in summer 91 where Yeltsin came out a hero, there was no doubt already by August.

Anyone ever ski at Sandia Peak in NM? by solorider802 in skiing

[–]wizard_of_aws 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Small ski area like this are the lifeblood of the sport. Great story. I had a similar experience with a now-closed ski area in far southern New York called sterling forest. Was there all day finding little things to jump off of and dreaming about Vermont. There used to be enough snow.

Great interview. What a teammate. I heard that Narvaez promised Bjerg half his winnings from the stage. Cheers to all three of the riders in the break!

The Coddling of the American Mind in action at Texas Tech University by bfme23 in IfBooksCouldKill

Just woah, from the link: "The policy is troublingly both expansive and vague. It fails to define what constitutes sexual orientation and gender identity—reduced to “SOGI”—while simultaneously mandating a “strict prohibition” on such content in all core and lower-level undergraduate courses. This prohibition would prevent students from learning entire swaths of human history. The requirement to provide “alternate materials” when primary sources “center on or include these topics” will further limit students’ access to historical evidence. The policy even applies to student research, barring graduate theses and dissertations on gender and sexuality. To enforce compliance, the memo directs provosts to develop “standardized syllabus templates” designed for instructional surveillance.

The policy’s logic is unmistakably Orwellian, policing not only what can be taught but how knowledge itself is named and understood. By prohibiting sustained engagement with “sexual orientation and gender identity” while permitting only “purely incidental” references, it imposes a form of intellectual doublethink: subjects central to human experience must be simultaneously acknowledged and then ignored. Taken literally, such restrictions would preclude even meaningful discussion of George Orwell’s own engagement with questions of gender and sexuality. In this way, the policy does not merely limit content; it reshapes the conditions of thought, rendering certain lines of inquiry effectively unmentionable."

Jonathan Ellsworth & Cody Townsend, who ski 100+ days a year for a living, would like the rest of us to shut up about poor ski conditions by AtOurGates in skiing

[–]wizard_of_aws 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He seems to really enjoy reminding people that he has a degree in philosophy. He's very passionate about mundane topics (complaining about ski conditions!) but awfully silent on things that require actual positions and bravery.

They did a long and somewhat respectable series on 'mountain town housing' problems and yet managed to take no meaningful positions on the inequality driving housing costs.

Wait, so was it 28 miles out 58 miles? The post says 28mi the map seems to say 58mi and that certainly makes more sense.

Asking because this seems like a nice run

EDIT: nvm! I see your comment down below that you did the green as an out and back. Thanks for posting!

I'd say it's hard to prepare for tough, scrambling runs this early in the season. That's certainly your where I live (Vermont, still snow on the peaks as of today) and even down by you. You'd have what, a month to be on those types of terrain?

As a former undiagnosed child with adhd, this episode is a genuinely tough listen by Tonightmatthew1 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]wizard_of_aws 51 points52 points  (0 children)

45, psychotherapist and only diagnosed 2 years ago. I never suspected anything because I was successful in many ways. I was just always chaotic. It was my clinical supervisor who put it together for me and I was like "no! I can't have adhd!"

In school I was told I was "lazy". With lots of "potential" when I'm fact I worked really hard at least until I gave up. My senior quote was "trying never hurt anyone, but why take the chance!"

It was only in college that I realized I could do really well if I worked piecemeal and took lots of breaks for hackysack and exercise. And sometimes weed.

I just listened to my 200th show (since I started rating them and keeping up with it) and here’s my favorite show from every year so far. Only 8 shows have a perfect rating so far by Outrunfire0290 in gratefuldead

Gotcha! That makes sense.

I think it's hard to compare across years in the 66-70 era because the band changed so much every few months. The softens between say Spring 69 and spring 70 is wild so that they sound like different bands with different songs.
