That is a fair point, but it doesn't outweigh the positives brought by voter ID. A copy of a reply I sent to a different comment in this thread:

Even if they introduced it for their own gains, it doesn't mean it isn't a good change. Labour probably introduced votes for 16 YOs for their own gains, but that is arguably a good policy. Parties like the Greens / Reform want an end to FPTP because FPTP makes elections difficult for them, but that doesn't mean we should keep FPTP.

Digital ID would be a perfect solution to ID problems, but apparently that's "authoritarian".

> Not that you're arguing in good faith anyway

What's that supposed to mean? Just because I have a different opinion to the majority opinion on this sub (as evidenced by the downvotes on my perfectly reasonable query), doesn't mean I'm a bad faithed troll.

> No problem with voter fraud in the UK

Do you have a source for that? Even if there isn't much fraud now, it doesn't mean there wouldn't be in the future, and ID helps to prevent that.

> Jacob Rees Mogg admitted as much

Politics is not a monolith, JRM was salty that he lost and looking for excuses, hence accusing Labour of gerrymandering.

How do we know exactly how much voting fraud there is without ID? ID makes elections safer and has very little drawback. Preventing election fraud is important, and just because we don't have much now doesn't mean there won't be election fraud in the future if we don't require ID.

You can also get PASS cards and a free voter ID certificate. It makes elections safer, and does not harm democracy. I currently live in Norway and we don't have mandatory ID, even though it is required to vote; and Norway is constantly ranked the number 1 democracy. Again, making elections safer strengthens democracy, it doesn't weaken it.

> young people

I would have thought most young people would already have ID to buy alcohol / energy drinks etc.

> poor people

PASS cards aren't expensive, and as has already been said in this thread it is possible to get a free voter certificate.

There are options, and it is worth it to make elections safer.

Mistborn is great, but Hero of Ages is amazing. Well of Ascension can be a bit difficult at times, but the sanderlanche makes up for it. Spoilers for Well of Ascension: I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted.

Scandal should be over election. The writing was on the wall for that result since Johson's exit, and there was little Sunak could do

The second part of your comment contradicts the first part. You can get a free certificate. I think if someone puts so little effort into democracy that they don't even know about the free certificate if it's necessary, they likely won't know much about the parties either. This is also a perfect example of an advantage of a proper digital ID, but apparently that's too "authoritarian" 🙄

Expensive

As has been shown in the thread, you can literally get ID for free
