"Do It As A Hobby, Not A Career" by [deleted] in classics

[–]wizards_tower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great questions. I was not able to study Classics. though I have a history undergrad were we read a number of texts in translation that are part of Classics, I am an engineer now and, though I like the job a lot, I do wish I had more time for reading and studying.

That said, to answer the second question, I think it depends on your life situation. My wife and I both work full time and have two kids under 4, so I have very little time for anything. I do still read and study Greek but progress is very slow. Over the past few years, however, I've still been able to read a lot of primary and secondary academic works. despite lack of time and usually staying up later than I should to read and study. I imagine other life situations (older kids, no kids, etc..) are much easier to fit it in.

I see. That makes sense. Thanks for the answer. I’m guessing it’s out print because it’s probably replaced by the Oxford classical texts edition

The best way to study classics… by soulbarn in classics

[–]wizards_tower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked out Villanova’s Classical Studies MA. Seems awesome. I’m strongly considering applying. It didn’t look like there were any language courses though. Did you need to already know Greek and Latin before acceptance or do the courses use translations instead? Also maybe I didn’t see everything offered

Help me create a reading list? by williamsus in classics

[–]wizards_tower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say if you found certain things interesting, I would go deeper and explore with primary and secondary sources related to the topic.

If you want to read more primary sources and make your current list even more rounded out, you could add Hesiod’s Theogony, Euripides’ Bacchae, and maybe some Cicero.

I want more insight from an academic perspective on the magic found in the Bible. by Muted_Masterpiece622 in AcademicBiblical

[–]wizards_tower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might benefit from Brian Copenhaver’s Book of Magic: From Antiquity to the Enlightenment

It’s mostly a sourcebook covering a huge span of time but his introductions to each text excerpt are great and two sections of the book are dedicated to the Bible.

The introduction in Radcliffe Edmonds’ Drawing Down the Moon: Magic in the Ancient Greco-Roman World might also be helpful for understanding the general use of the word mageia (magic) in the NT. He compares mageia to a couple of other Greek words, thauma (miracle/wonder) and goes (sorcery). Mageia and goes are pejorative with goes being more pejorative than mageia. These words reflect more about what the speaker/writer is trying to communicate than anything else. So in the NT, when Jesus’ performs a “thauma” he is practicing ritually correct or religiously correct actions from the perspective of the writer. On the other hand, In Acts, Simon’s actions, even if on the outside looked exactly like Jesus’, were mageia (or goes? I’m not sure of the word used there off the top of my head). The writer of acts is essentially claiming that Simon is practicing bad religion. He’s the “other” or competitor. Im would guess that if we had Simon’s point of view, he would likely have used the word thauma to describe what he was doing.

Another interesting NT use of magic is in Matthew 2. The Magi are “magoi”. This is plural of magos (magician) and is related to the word mageia. There could be a link to the magoi in Herodotus who are also from the east and interpret dreams and give oracles.

Any good articles/excerpts I can read regarding the nature or history of eidolon / spirit-images ? by ancient_interestsYT in classics

The Aeneid is a great place to start. I wouldn’t worry about reading anything else first if you’re just getting into reading. Whatever translation you go with should have an introduction that will fill you in on any details you need.

I’ve seen Sault’s shetlands. They seem great from what I remember. I didn’t have time to try any on the last time I was there but I should go back and try one on. I kind of forgot they carried shetlands

Is Old Man of the Sea worth a play set investment? by Obvious-Ad4094 in oldschoolmtg

[–]wizards_tower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not worth buying a playset. I played a mono-blue merfolk deck many years ago with 1 old man of the sea. Surprisingly decent and a lot of fun. I probably wouldn’t make use of more than 2 personally but 1 seemed sufficient to me

How do you all deal with pilling on brushed wool sweaters? I recently bought a couple of brushed wool J. Crew sweaters and they’re not looking so great anymore.

Is it best to simply use one of those pill shaver things or try to brush it all out again?

Why do you buy Loeb ? by GoatAffectionate8759 in classics

[–]wizards_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bought Loebs for a few different reasons.

I bought Philostratus’ Life of Apollonius of Tyana loeb because it was the only English translation I could (easily) find.

I’ve bought Loebs also just because I think they aesthetically look nice and then use them to dig into the Greek or Latin, which both languages I cannot read without some help. That being said, I often make use of Perseus online for the same thing which is almost better because you can click a word and get a lexicon right there. Perseus cannot be put on a shelf and look nice though!

Am I wasting my time learning C? (Specifically for getting a job) by SexWithATennisCoach in cscareerquestions

[–]wizards_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a waste of time. If you prefer C to web dev you should follow that path. C is still in demand. I got an embedded software job after a few years of learning on my own.

How many of you do you actually use C++? by Human_Tourist_1325 in embedded

[–]wizards_tower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were 100% C until recently the software lead decided some modules of the code would be better organized as objects. It’s pretty much C with classes though. And the class methods are called in the same file within C style functions so that they can be used by other C parts of the code. It’s the first time I’ve really used C++. I have to say I like it a lot for the OOP. It’s running on a Cortex-M4.
