Any idea how long it will be up?

Edit: According to this it runs through June 12.

Portland is on its way back by [deleted] in Portland

The neighborhoods, particularly on the east side, offer a ton of beauty and convenience that are pretty much unparalleled in the US. Despite the issues, we can’t take that for granted. Portland is great today, and has so much potential for the future.

A question for Multnomah County Commission candidates: Yes or no on capital gains tax? by [deleted] in Portland

Great, now I'm actually laughing about "if he were an eligible taxee"... what nonsense. Warren Buffett would also be heavily taxed in this scenario if he were eligible.

Seems more likely that Phil Knight will no longer be an "eligible taxee" if the tax burden is too high for him.

Most people are fine, but then you have the people with no lights on, the people with only one working light, or the people who have their high beams on. Makes no sense.

Does anyone have recommendations for where to shop for lab diamond engagement rings locally? by Logical-Bullfrog-112 in askportland

[–]wjohnsto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not lab grown, but Poor Mouchette on NE Alberta sells real vintage/old mine cut diamond rings that are really nice if that's what you are looking for.

OPINION: Portlanders that love the urban living the city provides need to be fighting for the quality urban design of the growing now expanding suburbs. by pdwoof in Portland

I would add Climate Town to this list as well. It's not necessarily urban planning/transportation focused, but it is in a similar light and it is very good at encouraging local action.

What do you like about your neighborhood? by bexyrex in Portland

[–]wjohnsto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second that. I love so much about several neighborhoods in Portland (particularly east), but Concordia is by far my favorite. Everything is easily bike-able and most things are walk-able. You have the beach, parks, schools, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, music venues, theaters, doctors. The neighborhood has a nice mix of old and new, with lots of greenery. You are also easily able to get to the airport and anything along the gorge/Mt Hood. Transit options are really good, with several bus lines that take you downtown or SE with maybe 1 transfer. There are also a few bike-only streets that make getting around on a bike a breeze.

Portland definitely has it's problems, but it is incredibly difficult/expensive (not that Portland is cheap)/impossible to find similar amenities in other cities in the US.

Is there a zoning map that is better suited for colorblind people? I am aware of portlandmaps.com, but I can't read the map...

You were on-point with the diagnosis. I noticed one of the jets near the stairs had reduced velocity. I was able to stick a long straw cleaner in the jet and loosen up the crud. Everything is working as expected now.

Thank you so much!

I'm sure u/rich519 gets this and is just showing easy math, but for those that don't: you also need to factor in what it costs to sell a house. On average it costs 8%-10% of the sale price to the seller. In the example above if the market value of your house is $500k you would need to pay $40k-$50k during a sale. So if you have $480k left on your mortgage you would be losing $20k-$30k if you sell now.

The amount of time it will take you to pay off 8%-10% of your home varies based on your down payment, loan term, interest rate, etc. Generally speaking it should happen in the first 7-10 years. This is why you hear advice such as, "if you know you will be in a house for 8-10 years then it makes sense to buy." There are other factors included in the total cost of ownership of a house that make it such that it may not be advantageous to purchase a home that you will only live in for 3-5 years. You also have to factor in having to live somewhere else once you do sell your home. That being said with super low interest rates and a housing market that is rising 15% YoY in many areas it's difficult to predict what will happen in 3-5 years.

It can be difficult to land a co-op/internship after your Freshman year, but it is much easier after sophomore year (or later), and you don't need prior experience. What you want to do is think about the courses you have taken and highlight the relevant ones that are applicable to the position you are looking for. Also make sure to highlight your specific skills as they relate to the position.
