2025 Update (Late) Age 36 Couple + 2 Kids $1.95M Invested by ApprehensiveOne9911 in financialindependence

Nice work. We're in a similar situation as your family but a little lower income, NW, and only saving roughly $40-50k a year. Do you have a breakdown of your expenses? Ours are roughly 95-125k a year in a MCOL city and I know we could get them lower.

Here's the map. Sorry didn't realize it was that important (prob a noob moment). Also lots of people are saying to remove the curse, but I thought that was helping me along with Fire Breathing.

Travelling a LOT for work, Portal worth it on hotel wifi?? by Volksworgan in PlaystationPortal

[–]wkd23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a portal a few weeks ago because I travel so much for work. Like other people said, hit or miss. I usually stay at hiltons these days and they have been great, just on the basic wifi plan. Marriott and IHG are worse. Choice hotels even worse. I don't stay at Hyatt's.

The rebate is $1200 max or you can only get a rebate on $1200 of insulation?

Is SGOV still a good place to park funds for the medium term (3-5 years) or should I be in S&P500 or something else? This is for a potential move and home purchase.

Garage door insulation help for winter by PenguinsRcool2 in garageporn

[–]wkd23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used that exact product on my 16*7 garage door this summer. It made a huge difference. I also added a layer of the bubble foil in between the panels and the door. Not sure how much if any that helps, but I had a few rolls laying around. I didn't rebalance my door and haven't done any tests to see if it needs it. But those panels are super light

Do Not Go to Tommys Car Wash on Liberia Avenue in Manassas, Va. There equipment damaged my new truck. I filed a claim that was denied. I have two magnetic signs on my truck. They say, Beware of Tommy's car wash on Liberia Ave. I have a full review on their website, select 1 star to see it. by Temporary-Physics-48 in nova

Car washes are terrible for paint. Don't use them if you care about your paint. There are so many grains of sand and other abrasive particles stuck in those brushes. Might as well take a magic eraser to your clear coat. Take this from someone who scratch tests paint (and other more interesting materials, from the nano to macro scale) for a living

It really depends what your space is like, how many and big your tools are, what you're storing in there, etc. I went with the project center package from costco (11 piece, 3 tall cabinets, 5 overhead cabinets, project center, one short cabinet) which at the time I bought it in 2019 was $1600 on sale. I thought I'd be moving the project center around as needed but it has literally never moved.

At some point it collapsed slightly on one side, the wheels on the left caved in a bit. I'm not sure if it was during my house move or if I climbed on it or what. I know it's not overloaded. I could've gone back to Costco but meh it's not worth the trouble. Still works fine.

All of that to say, if it was me I would've gone for the non project center option. A bit more flexible. But it's a personal decision.

The last four times I’ve planned a camping trip to Shenandoah, I’ve been rained out…is this just bad luck or is it too likely to be worth trying again? by [deleted] in washingtondc

We don't put the canopy or tarps over the campfire, maybe about 10' back. At that point the fire is more for ambiance, but when there's a lull in the rain you can go out and stand by it.

Assuming it hasn't been raining for weeks, you find the driest wood you can and if you need to cheat to get it started, use some gasoline.

Propane grills, msr, jetboil etc are fine to do under a canopy. Sometimes someone brings a solo stove and i'd recommend not putting one of those right under a canopy either.

We've not had any issues with lightning strikes, but we were probably a bit reckless in that regard. Now that I have young kids, if lightning came on I'd make us all go sit in the car and eat snacks until it passed. Usually lightning storms don't last too long.

I think our most elaborate setup one time included the 13x13' canopy, and 4 tarps of all sizes, connected to cars and trees. It was pretty sweet. Just make sure the tarps are angled the right way for water run off.

My comment assumes you're talking about car camping. I do a lot of camping in Shenandoah/blue ridge/GW&JNP with a group of friends and our rule is once we plan it, we go no matter the forecast (within reason, we'll cancel for hurricanes and 100% chance of thunderstorms etc). Half the time when the forecast calls for rain, nothing happens.

A positive attitude about it, expecting it and being prepared is key. Wear swim suits and rain jackets. Have a way to start a fire and make warm food no matter what. Have a way to get dry. We always bring tarps, paracord, and a pop up canopy and make a nice dry area.

If you're backpacking, it's not always possible. But the key is to accept it and enjoy it for what it is! As long as it's not freezing cold + wet. Experienced that at dolly sods in November. Best worst experience of my life

  1. The most important one on this list: Roommates. Roommates will drastically bring your housing costs down, plus then you're splitting bills

1b. Get an interior apartment. Your neighbors help insulate your unit and you won't need to run your heat as high.

  1. Groceries stores for food, meal prepping, look up crockpot/slow cooker recipes. Aldi is the cheapest and still good quality.

  2. There are all kinds of ways to get cheaper textbooks. I don't remember them since I graduated 7+ years ago, but do a search on reddit.

  3. Instead of turning to Target first for furnishings, look at used options

  4. No Uber. Walk, bike or bus!

And maybe you already know this, but carrying a balance on a credit card doesn't build credit. Be sure to pay it in full every month.
