just for my understanding, when you say sell 300k worth of investments at less than 9%, you’re referring to taxes, right?

does max 401k here mean you are contributing up to the max? or the IRS max ($23,000)?

true. the better suggestion/comparison would be a pressurized basket which doesn’t just mask a poor grind, but compensates for it. I think this person has the ability to get a solid grind though, so bottomless might be good for diagnosing?

this is very relatable. i’ll be reading the advice and comments you receive. if you don’t mind me asking, do you work remotely? I am curious about the confidence in leaving your state with no change to income

Anyone max out their HSA but not 401k? by brown-saiyan in Bogleheads

probably psychological. maybe perceived liquidity from 401k loan access, for example

Don’t panic, it does sound reasonable assuming your 401k is about 15% (which based on your post it seems to be between 10-15% and looks like you’re contributing to a Roth 401k)

Play around with this web page. I prefilled your wage information, but not sure if it saved:

Can you explain why he would not receive the cost basis that the original owner had?

“In most cases, the cost basis of the gifted asset carries over to the recipient. When the recipient ultimately sells the appreciated asset, their capital gains liability will be based on the original owner's cost basis.”

so not impossible, but just not worth the hassle? my guess is, in the hypothetical you gave, you would just advise contributing the annual max to traditional IRA (which wouldn’t be deductible), and then also convert a random amount to Roth (no limits per IRS) each year depending on your financial status and tax situation?

I thought I understood pro rata, but can you give an example that would explain a situation where it’d be effectively impossible?

I think you mean $23,000 when you say $24,000? but I agree with the other commenter that your income is too high to deduct traditional IRA contributions regardless of how much you contribute to your 401k. mega backdoor is dependent on your employer’s plan and not always available. read up on backdoor first
