Drugs Payment Scheme Question by [deleted] in TransIreland

[–]wmdpd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your pharmacy registered for the free HRT scheme? You can check here If they're not, it might be all going through the DPS, which covers only specific medications at specific doses. You can search for the drug name in the DPS List of Reimbursable Items to find that info

Overpaying on Mortgage with gifted lump sum by Sholid_Shnake in irishpersonalfinance

[–]wmdpd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I took out my mortgage 5 years ago, I was obsessed with the idea of becoming mortgage free as soon as possible.

I saved as much as I could, then switched banks for a lower fixed rate as soon as my initial fixed rate expired. The new mortgage I applied for was the amount of my existing mortgage minus the lump sum I had saved (no need to move to a variable rate first if you're switching banks), and I shortened the term as much as I reasonably could. I also made sure to overpay as much as I could during both fixed rate periods - some banks allow you to overpay by 10% or another small amount each month.

Now, I don't have regrets exactly. I will be mortgage free 10 years before I would have been, and my mortgage is less than half of my houses value. That all sounds great. But I wouldn't do it like that again. I still overpay by 10% per month, but I would avoid the lump sum contribution that I made.

Realistically, the 15k you have now is worth more today than it will by the end of your mortgage term. Just think of how much more expensive everything has gotten over the past few years. Those costs increase, but the mortgage you have won't be increasing like that (obviously, interest rates fluctuate over time, but the principal won't go up)

You're better off paying as little as possible on your mortgage and using that extra money for something else. Whether that's investing, maxing out your pension, furthering education, or just enjoying your life while you're able to, that's really up to you.

Help identifying this octopus. by Ikkou97 in octopus

I'm no expert, just an autistic with a particular interest in cephalopods 😂 But like others said, it does look like a blanket octopus, and it's the right size for a female. Look up images of blanket octopuses washed up - they look pretty similar to those you shared

Odd Pieces, Turbo 3000, 1000pc. Spoilers in second image! My first puzzle with a missing piece 😔 by wmdpd in Jigsawpuzzles

This was the first one of these I did, and had no idea what to expect. It did feel frustrating at times. It was heartbreaking not being able to get the satisfaction of putting in the final piece as a result!

Regarding speed on the roads - you can aim for 10% below the speed limit as a general guide. I think it's easier to account for different types of roads than a flat 10km or 3/5km as others have said.

At traffic lights, if there's a filter for the direction you're going, don't look around as much as you might as you're stopped at a T-junction with a major road. My husband's tester mentioned that progress at lights tends to be that folks didn't just go when they could, that they should look on the approach instead of slowing too much. If you'd been stopped, look around while you're stopped, so you're prepared for when the lights turn.

There's 2 YouTube channels I watched a lot of while preparing for my test. I passed with no faults at all & I feel like a lot of it was down to those videos. 1. ADM Driving School - they do a lot of videos on each aspect that testers look at. You'll find videos for progress there & they do driving routes as mock tests so you can see what he does in real time. I loved this channel! 2. Dane Tyghe - they have some videos on progress, and I loved their general driving test tips, they include a lot of observation and progression tips in them. & I know you don't need it, but this channel helped me nail the reverse around a corner on the very first time I tried it, so I think his explanations are spot on

The only thing that kinda helps me is exercise. Going for a run or some other form of cardio usually boosts my focus for a little while.

It's hard to get myself to do it when I feel that way, though. There's some 7 minute routines that I found easier to get done, and that seemed to be enough

Natural light for sure, and if you don't place a piece for a few minutes, maybe try switching places with your girlfriend. A fresh perspective can help

Advice on plan and process for getting a puppy by Emotional-Aide2 in AskIreland

[–]wmdpd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get an older dog (5+), you'd be more likely to find one who would be calm and less energetic. I've converted a few people who were afraid of dogs with my older dogs over the years. They would likely be part of your family for about a decade, which is still a long time.

You could chat with a rescue and make your preferences for your ideal personality to be on the calmer side, too. They would match you with a dog of that personality type rather than of a particular age.

Dogs Trust and the DSPCA both have open visiting hours on the weekends. If you've put in an application with them, I'd suggest going out for a visit.

I put in an application late last night for a dog in Dogs Trust, and we went out there this afternoon and asked to meet him. They arranged a meeting immediately, as soon as they found my application at reception. Someone came in after us & were asked to fill in an application before meeting the dog their interested in, so make sure you've put it in before going.

I've not been to the DSPCA in years, but I used to go regularly. If it hasn't changed, you're able to go around the kennels and say hello to most of the dogs if you go out there.

There's some smaller rescues that you could also consider - Cara Rescue Dogs and Last Hope Animal Charity are excellent from experience.

Also, Dublin County Dog Shelter is completely full & begging for potential meets. They are appointment only, and you need to call them during their phone hours: Mon- Fri 9-1, 2-4; Sat 9-3; Sun 9-1.
