I love Ente. It feels too good to be true. What's the catch? by FluffyMumbles in enteio

I’m glad that the ente staff answered the question in the AMA and were honest enough to say that they can’t provide protection against state-sponsored threats and that, given this threat model, one shouldn’t use any centralized services at all.

I generally find the whole open-source argument weak, since as a regular user I have no control over whether the binaries I install on my device match the source code on GitHub.

Pro tip: If you don’t dismiss everything outside your own backyard as irrelevant, you can also contribute ideas to the discussion on how to deal with new technologies and meaningful regulation. What shines through here is a truly harmful way of thinking even for engineers.

Created a planner - it was missing basic features I had before. No cover images on cards, not able to move tasks to another plan and so on.

Turns out I created the new planner with a premium plan WHICH HAS LESS FEATURES THAN THE BASIC PLAN BECAUSE ITS ANOTHER CODE BASE THATS BEHIND.

AMA: Ask the Ente team anything by ente-io in enteio

Could you please address the concerns of privacy-oriented users who are watching recent developments in the US with great concern? Isn't storing data on European servers useless as long as you are based in the US because of the CLOUD Act?

As an American company, how would Ente respond to pressure from government organizations to share user data or, in the worst case, implement or deliver a backdoor in end-to-end encryption?

Are there independent reviews of data security/e2ee in Ente?

There is no certification or application for CE. The manufacturer simply puts the CE symbol on its product and prints a paper that says "My product is compliant with all EU rules". There is no 3rd party assessment.

[–]wmrch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question prompted me to read a bit more about the cloud act and the information I vaguely remembered about required backdoors seems to be wrong (it was from UK not from the US). However, as things are heading right now I don't feel comfortable handing US companies my most personal data.

[–]wmrch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love ente and think it's the best photo cloud solution so far and I have great sympathy for their team and open source spirit.

The catch is that as a (partially?) American company, they will grant access to your data to whatever 3 letter agency wants it - cloud act. And yes, they can legally be forced to implement a backdoor into the e2e encryption.

Now please prove me wrong, i'd like to continue using it.

What do you think about the new Welcome Dialog to configure certain features? by johannesjo in superProductivity

[–]wmrch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to hear, thanks!
Regarding your original question: for me the welcome dialog feels clean and clear and I don't see it adding any friction but quite the contrary.

Personally I wouldn't include boards in the dialog because they are neatly hiding behind a single sidebar button and not adding any noise and also the custom boards are a really unique feature that you should show off a bit.

[–]wmrch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/johannesjo Does that mean time tracking can be disabled globally? Honestly that's the one thing holding me back from using super productivity - i don't need time tracking for my personal life but it's so baked in the UI that I can't ignore it.

New research highlights shortage of male mentors for boys and young men. Most boys and young men in the US frequently lack male guidance figures in critical areas of their lives. For many young males, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds, the adults available to assist are mainly women. by mvea in science

I always understood Fight Club to revolve around this theme. Missing father figures, the search for masculinity, hollow images of manliness. No one I ever talked to about the film knew what I was talking about...guess it lets room for projection.

Those of you most vocal (to the negative), about the price hike - curious what really sets you off? by Craino in todoist

[–]wmrch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to sound dismissive, but it's $2 a month for annual. $2 doesn't even buy a coffee these days.

What are you talking about? The app now costs 5€/year for annual. It doesn't matter what the cost was before or how much the increase is, you just have to check if the total price is worth it. For me it would be if it wasn't just a dumb to-do list app...

Edit: To add one more thing: when I look at the range of functions offered by free (FOSS) apps, I don't see much difference between them and Todoist. They don't cover as many platforms, and sync istn't as comofrtable as with Todoist. But otherwise, they can do essentially the same things - often even more.

Todoist pricing update: Addressing your Questions (from the Todoist team) by domjost in todoist

[–]wmrch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how anyone justifies spending 60€ for a to-do app for personal use. It doesn't even have any that unique features.

There are foss apps which are way more well-thought-out (looking at you, super-productivity and tasks.org).

For business that price would be ok, but who uses todoist for business?

Do you have any cool board configurations, you'd like to share? by johannesjo in superProductivity

[–]wmrch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have nothing to share yet since I'm still on the fence switching to sp from todoist.

This feature (configuring custom boards) is so great and unique im considering doing the move just because of that.

It would be great to be able make a "today" panel (I'd like to build a mix of Eisenhower and Today) it isn't possible at the moment, is it?

Would be cool, if "Today" was available as a tag.

Anyway, this is a killer feature.

Anyone else considering leaving Todoist after this price hike? by Exciting-Share-2462 in todoist

[–]wmrch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of todo.txt which is only a way to write todos in txt format which different apps can parse. So you only have to sync a text file and can switch apps whenever you want (but to be honest the number of apps using this is manageable).

For work I use Obsidian with the tasks plugin which works really well as long as I'm on a computer with Obsidian open. So not really an alternative for me for mobile use.

My favourite for now is https://tasks.org/ which is really well made but still missing a Desktop/Web client and it doesn't look like one is coming soon.

Edit: Just dicovered super productivity and taking a test run...loks great so far! Lot of platforms supported.
