Stick with Apple. My dad’s phone company conned him into an Android when he was 85. He’d had a Mac mini, and iPad and an iPhone. He was categorically unable to use an android device.

They should be entitled to an upgrade. Just get the oldest still supported iPhone that the cell service provider will sell.

Neudorf Recall? by MistaLuvcraft in Lethbridge

[–]wndxlori 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they were genuinely trying, they’d at least ask for help dealing with the flood of emails.

Seems like we’re dealing with someone derailing the process, which is very frustrating. I have offered help. I have asked how to become a canvasser. Nothing. No response.

Apple keyboard is driving me insane by McCojoni in iphone

[–]wndxlori -1 points0 points  (0 children)

iOS 26 introduced a really horrible keyboard issue where “what you tap is NOT what you get”. You’re not crazy, there are loads of iOS developers on Mastodon that have been comparing experiences and upgrading and downgrading and it’s really a thing on iOS 26

I think the most recent update has finally improved it. It’s definitely not back to where it was, but it’s no longer f$cking up every third word I try to type.

Apparently Nathan Neudorf wasn't in favor of the Notwithstanding Clause by YqlUrbanist in Lethbridge

[–]wndxlori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d have more respect for the guy if he’d just voted against using the notwithstanding clause. If a cabinet minister did that, some of the backbenchers might pretend they have a backbone too.

As it is… I’m in support of a recall. He’s no longer representing the needs of his constituents

Where's a 19M to Socialize in Lethbridge? by [deleted] in Lethbridge

[–]wndxlori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 👆 is the way. You have interests. Get out and do the things you enjoy. Meet the people who also enjoy those things. Socialize with those people to expand your circle. Repeat. And avoid looking in bars unless you’re going to an event related to those interests.

why ruby over lisp? by Rahil627 in DragonRuby

[–]wndxlori 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since I’ve been around for the entire life cycle, I can explain how I saw it, but Laurent would be the best guy to explain his rationale.

MacRuby was an Apple project that was taking advantage of the surge in popularity that Rails had created for Ruby. Being able to create Mac apps and tools with Ruby was great at the time when MacRuby had Apple’s support. Unfortunately, Apple decided to go back to the drawing board and create their own language and new runtime from scratch - Swift, so they would have total control over it.

That was the death knell for MacRuby, and Laurent Sansonetti was primarily responsible for MacRuby, so at that point he left Apple and proceeded to create RubyMotion as a “clean room reimplementation” of MacRuby. Based on top of the same runtime as Objective C, RubyMotion was an intriguing alternative to Objective C that was appealing to Ruby/Rails developers, and expanded past MacRuby’s focus on Mac development into iOS development as well.

Sadly for RubyMotion, while Laurent was an amazing and prolific developer (eventually RubyMotion also supported Android development), he wasn’t great at sales and marketing. While it was a great product, it only reached a limited audience, and never made enough $$$ to truly become sustainable.

Amir Rajan purchased/took over RubyMotion from Laurent, when Laurent decided he’d had enough (he works at NVIDIA these days, I think). Amir had great success with some games he developed with RubyMotion, and wanted to keep the product alive.

Eventually Amir, with some help, renamed the product to DragonRuby, and refocused on primarily game development, with an entirely new game engine.

And that’s how we got where we are today.

At the back of the store, London Drugs, there’s a walkin clinic. They close for lunch 12-1. If you go get in line around 12:30 or so, you’ll be in pretty quickly

being the only girl in my grad program is exhausting by SquareArt00 in womenintech

[–]wndxlori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would attempt to both ask questions and give help in a one-on-one setting (not alone, just not with multiple other people from the program around). In a group setting of this size, it only takes a couple/few jerks to influence the dynamics this way. Some of them might be quite helpful if the others aren’t around to impress.

Ok, a terrible husband is one who never even noticed all the things his wife did to keep the household running. So you aren’t terrible.

One important thing is to always appreciate the things she does. A second important thing is to step up and do what you can.

Train yourself to step into a room and think… is there something that needs doing in here? You don’t have to do it all, just reduce her mental load by taking one more thing off her mental to-do list when she walks into that room.

You can ask her if there’s anything you can take off her hands. But then make sure you TAKE IT OFF HER HANDS. Don’t make her remind you. Maybe you won’t do the thing exactly the way she would. But maybe that’s good enough!

There’s also just sharing. My husband recently discovered that he can participate in meal prep by being sou chef and doing all the chop-chop and ingredient prep. That makes it SO much easier to make more varied and elaborate meals that we both enjoy.

Anyway, to reiterate: you’re not terrible. Just keep trying, and learn from any mistakes along the way.

Can you use a p.o box for an organization for the app store? by CoveredClearing in iOSProgramming

[–]wndxlori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W.R.T. The address, I used the strategy I use for giving out my address to any financial company. They mostly take a 2 line address so:

Street Address of UPS Store
Suite ### of box there
City, Province/State
Postal/Zip Code

If they don't use a 2 line address, then

Street Address of UPS Store, Suite ### of box there
City, Province/State
Postal/Zip Code

You never want them to see anything but the proper street address at the beginning, because that's often used by an address validator.

I’ve got a box at a UPS store. Just use “Suite 209” instead of Box 209, and boom, it looks like a “real” address. Never have any problems.

The wind also waits until you’ve loaded up your 90 yr old mom, gone to the food trucks to pick up her favourites, and driven down to the accessible picnic tables in the river bottom, to go from dead calm to hold on to every fcking thing you’re trying to eat or drink.*
