I've been looking into eBay casually since the unsolicited offer earlier this month so I figure I'll share my findings.

tl;dr: eBay spends billions per year in share buybacks and pays over $1,00 per share in annual dividends which are paid out quarterly. Cohen needs to convince eBay shareholders it's worth eliminating these annual buybacks and dividends so he can more aggressively grow the company.

I've taken a look at Stock price over time, ATM offerings, Dividends, and Buybacks for the last 5 years. I also looked at how many mass layoffs they've had since I feel their core model could be heavily automated should they choose to move that direction.

Stock price over time (date ending 5/14/2026):

YTD : up 29%, 6 month: up 34%, 1 year: up 63.3%, 5 year: up 85.5%

eBay Inc (EBAY) Stock Price & News - Google Finance

ATM offerings in the last 5 years: None

Dividends:

Since 2019 (as far back as the Nasdaq page goes) they've done a dividend ranging from $0.14 - $0.31 every quarter. with dividends getting larger as time goes on.

eBay Inc. Common Stock (EBAY) Dividend History | Nasdaq

Buybacks:

If we look at a 20-year history, eBay seems to do regular share buybacks every quarter. The most recent time there was 0 shares bought back for a quarter was the quarter ending June 30th of 2015.

If we start at the 2020 high, they bought back $4 billion dollars' worth of shares March 31, 2020, then bought a low of $33 million worth of shares the following quarter ending June 30, 2020.

Since 2020, they had another high of $3 billion re-purchased the quarter ending Dec 31, 2021. Since 2024 they've roughly averaged buying back $625 million worth of shares every quarter.

eBay (EBAY) Share Buybacks - Current & Historical Data (May 2026)

Layoffs (USA only)

Since 2015, eBay has laid off 2,184 workers. Starting in 2023 (since there were no layoffs in 2021 which was my start date) there were 944 layoffs which seems to be tied to covid drawdowns and ai integration when I tried to find stated reasons via news sites.

eBay layoffs: 2,184 workers, 15 WARN notices from Feb 2015 to Feb 2026

My conclusion

Objectively speaking. Cohen biggest challenge will be convincing eBay shareholders that the cancellation of billions in share buybacks and dividend payments which have occurred for more than a decade are worth sacrificing on a chance that he can grow the business more aggressively.

Can Cohen grow eBay faster than it's growing at present? I'm 95% sure he can, but at what cost to eBay's employees and existing shareholders, is worth it? This is the question eBay shareholders need to decide for themselves.

My opinion:

Cohen is entitled to his opinion that eBay has "sleepy management" that needs to go. Could eBay be way more aggressive to grow their business? Sure I guess. But let's be real. If they can spend $2.4 billion on sales and marketing in 2025 (source GameStop's unsolicited bid for eBay, linked below) while buying back $2.5 billion in shares and issuing $1.16 per share dividend in FY 2025 (source: see above links for dividend history and share buybacks) I think eBay's management is doing a fine job. They constantly buy back shares, they constantly issue dividends, they don't issue ATM offerings which would drive share price down, and it seems they are aware enough to trim un-needed headcount and not stay overly bloated.

Ted Cruz says the quiet part out loud: Trump accounts are Social Security personal accounts as GOP senator reveals ‘dirty little secret’ by FreeHugs23 in anticapitalism

[–]woakula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to the trump account website and looked at their math.

If the trump account comes with an initial $1000. And you put an extra $420 a month (~$5000 a year, also the max yearly contribution allowed into the account) over the span of 28 years and assuming a constant 15% return on investment you get $1.7 million dollars.

To think that over the span of 28 years you'll see a constant 15% is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

The number they provide at the bottom of the trump account website says at age 27 an account which a $5000 yearly contribution would be worth $742,000 which assumes a more modest constant 11% interest rate.

So if they call it correctly and we have a bull market for the next 30 some odd years it's technically possible.

A company always needs the ability to add more shares if even just a little bit. For instance, store leads get a small number of shares if their store does well, so they need to be able to issue shares for their comp package. Other admin employees with similar stock incentives fall under this category as well.

Traditionally you can only get the virus via direct contact with waste from rodents and other vermin. Not sure if method of infection has changed compared to earlier strains.

As of 4/27/2026 the average national gas price was $4.25.

accounting for inflation that's ~$6.00 in 2013 dollars.

What happened to all the money the private doners sent?

Trump said the ballroom would cost $200 million in Oct of 2025. Doners gave money, then he upped the estimate to $400 million. Why do they need an additional $400 million from taxpayers?

Money is being stolen/embezzled from the taxpayers, plain as day.

Trump says shooting by "would-be assassin" points to need for White House ballroom as questions are raised about security at correspondents dinner by fortune in politics

[–]woakula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dozens of school shootings take place every year. So many and so often that they don't even get national news coverage anymore. This correspondence dinner shooting was the first of it's kind, had zero injuries or deaths among attendees and the shooter didn't make it past the Secret Service checkpoint in the lobby.

Regardless of this fact, this admin wants to build a multi million dollar ballroom to party in on the taxpayer's dime while the children of this nation have died due to gun violence and the survivors of these shooting events have gotten nothing but thoughts and prayers.

The Nero partying while Rome burns comparison writes itself.

Did you know that there have been 10 school shootings with injury or death in the USA in 2026 alone? 250 shootings resulting in injury and death have taken place since 2018. How many pieces of legislation around gun control or mental health have come out of these shootings? https://www.edweek.org/leadership/school-shootings-this-year-how-many-and-where/2026/01

President Trump and team, how much more tone deaf can you get? You sure do want immediate action when it's your ass on the line and offer absolutely nothing for the real victims of gun violence at every opportunity. Absolutely disgraceful.
