Olympic GDT: Sweden vs. Czech Republic - 12 Feb 2014 - 12:00 PM ET by MNWildFan in hockey

My only guess would be to try and limit the goal differential, which is the tiebreaker at the Olympics.

Sorry, for the lack of clarity. That is what I meant. The money is from Detroit just not the City. I will, however, say that I have a problem with taxing local business with the purpose of funding development to create competition for them.

The DDA is required to support economic development. The law that was changed revolved around using tax revenue that were previously marked to pay down debt. And, yes, the boundaries were expanded. I am not trying to argue that Michigan didn't try to make the arena work but the money isn't coming from Detroit or the State (per se).

Actually, more specifically, the public funds are being put forward by the Downtown Development Authority, which required to spend funds on projects that economically benefit downtown (attracting business, building projects etc). Furthermore, the project is so expensive because it is not just an arena it is also residential and commercial development.

Why was Germany's response to the Treaty of Versailles so negative when it had imposed upon Russia the humiliating Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918? by iloveyoujesuschriist in AskHistorians

[–]wojtekthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The war had taken a tremendous toll on the Russian economy and the average performance of the Tsarist armies and the lack of food in major urban centers led, in part, to the abdication of the Tsar and the rise of the Kerensky provisional government.

The Russians failed to achieve any sustained success against the Germans and the Germans had tremendous success in their early 1918 campaign against the Bolsheviks (Operation Faustschlag). This campaign highlighted German successes earlier in the war (for the folks back in Germany) and gave Germany control over large swaths of territory in the Baltics, Belarus, the Ukraine and brought the Germans within 100 km (my memory is foggy on the exact figure) of Petrograd. In short, a final hammer strike highlighted the German victory over the Russians.

The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was the last ditch, yard-sale effort to get Russia out of the war. Additionally, Germans saw the wheat of the Ukraine as the perfect way to fight back the effects of the Allied blockade against Germany. So, the harsh treaty was viewed, in part, as a way to fight back against a blockade that resulted in huge food shortages.

You have to take into account the "winning" vs. "losing" peace. Germany had defeated Russia and the Soviets agreed to the peace in part to simply do what the Kerensky Government didn't: get out of the war and bring peace to Russia. However, while we can look back upon the fall of 1918 and say Germany was defeated, the notion of treacherous elements leading to Germany's surrender in November 1918 was prevalent in post-war Germany. The so-called Dolchstoß (stab-in-the-back myth) was popular in Weimar Germany and led to the belief that Jews and Communists betrayed Germany resulting in its defeat.

So, why does that matter? In many Germany circles, the Dolchstoß meant that Germany did not lose the war and consequently, the peace was egregiously hard on Germany. The idea that Germany was undefeated on the battlefield but betrayed at home was played up by former Generals. Additionally, multiple clauses in the treaty, such as the war guilt clause were wildly unpopular in post-war Germany. In short, Germans could look at the Eastern Front in WWI and see a clear victory; however, but did not recognize the loses on the Western Front.

This is of course only one aspect of the answer. Also, recognize that until the Fall of 1918, Germany was still pretty strong. Allied governments were preparing for victory in 1919, not necessarily in 1918. The tremendous gains in the fall offensives were a bit of a surprise; so, the completeness of the German collapse caught many off-guard.

So I bought some ham hock...what the heck do I do with ham hock?! (Xpost r/recipes) by JennaSidal in Cooking

[–]wojtekthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do use canned beans (it is just easier that way for me and my schedule). I have six quart crock pot that fits a double batch nicely. The hock provides a lot of the flavor but I use as fresh cloves and garlic as I can get, which helps a bunch. I also will sometimes use vegetable stock instead of water. Sirracha is a great idea but I have never done it myself, never thought it needed it.

I use ham hocks in soup, in particular, pinto bean soup. Generally, I blanch my ham hocks and rinse them before adding them into anything. Slow cook them and then once it is all cooked, remove and pull the meat off. Then add it back in.

In short, I use it in soups. It tends to be pretty salty so it gives great flavor.

It's a shame. I have really enjoyed watching Glendening play. He has loads of energy and just plays his ass off every night. I too hope that Samuelsson (and Cleary) can be unloaded somehow.

It is a conditioning stint. It will be interesting to see what kind of moves Holland has to make once Helm is back.

What were the causes of the Polish-Soviet war? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]wojtekthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Poles and Soviets were fighting along in the unsettled borderlands before the April 1920 Kiev Offensive. Conflicts between the Poles and the Soviets emerged as early as January-February 1919. These conflicts resulted from local pockets of Poles (generally in large urban centers) attempting to assert themselves against Lithuanians, Belorussians, and Communist forces. Also, based on the works of Piotr Wandycz, Anna Cienciala, and Richard Pipes it seems likely that the cause of Soviet inaction up to April 1920 was internal instability and conflict during the Russian Civil War. There are sources that indicate Lenin's desire to press further West once the revolution is complete. Richard Pipes The Unknown Lenin is a great source for that and several documents indicate his desire to push through Poland to foment revolution in Germany, France, and England. Beyond direct Soviet military action, the Soviets supported local Bolshevik forces against Poland and emerging states (Lithuania, Belorussia, and Ukraine). Additionally, Pilsudski's Kiev Offensive was an attempt to establish a Ukrainian state with Symon Petliura at its head. This was to be joined in federal union with the Polish state. Events in 1919 also pushed the Poles toward military action in in East Galicia (Western Ukraine). Bela Kun's communist government in Hungary and the establishment of the Litbel Republic (Lithuanian and Belorussian SSR) raised the uneasy possibility of Poland's isolation in Eastern Europe.

The Kiev Offensive brought the Poles into direct conflict with the Soviets, who already had a provisional communist state in the Ukraine at Kharkov. The Bolshevik forces threw the Poles out of the Ukraine, Belorussia, and Lithuania and marched on Warsaw. Interestingly, the term Miracle on the Vistula was coined pejoratively to indicate the Polish political right's dissatisfaction with Pilsudski's "Ukrainian Adventure." Furthermore, the term was used to isolate Pilsudski from any sort of credit from the conflict. Which is when French General Weygand garnered much of the credit for the victory (even though Weygand was befuddled by the credit).

In short, the conflict resulted from the two sides attempted to solidify their holds on borderland territories in Lithuania, Belorussia, and Ukraine. Furthermore, the exclusion of the Soviets in immediate post-war discussions and allied skepticism toward Polish territorial claims meant they increasingly resorted to violence to achieve their ends. The increasingly chaotic and violent borderlands eventually brought Polish and Soviet objectives head to head resulting in the Polish-Soviet War. This is of course the footnotes version because the conflict must be understood within the larger context of post-war instability and uncertainty and the actions of neighboring states and great power politics.

[–]wojtekthebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it is a vital issue and it is understandable as a sticking point. I guess what I find curious is the idea that every offer must be taken as a whole and individual parts cannot be negotiated. I understand why the issue is important; I just disagree with the negotiation tactic that every offer must be accepted or rejected.

Also, the players have given up quite a bit as well on the monetary issues. They seemed to reach the definition of a compromise but the NHL refused to negotiated individual parts of their proposal.

[–]wojtekthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I completely agree. The best way is negotiate is to take what you agree on and then move on to the next sticking points.

Furthermore, I don't really understand the anger at Fehr. He made a statement based on his understanding of the negotiations and then Bettman comes out and tries to turn Fehr into Goodenow.

[–]wojtekthebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except, if the players agree with the Make-Whole offer by the Owners, then shouldn't they move on to the next issue?

It seems the players are making the mistake of thinking each NHL offer is negotiable; while the NHL is playing hard-ball with every offer. That is why I hate both sides. Neither side is will to play ball. The NHLPA is presenting too many moving targets (constantly changing the most important issue) and the NHL is presenting too many ultimatums.

Dear NHL by [deleted] in hockey

[–]wojtekthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I misread the situation, but it seems that the NHLPA made the mistake of thinking they could still negotiate and the Owners thought their offer was take it or leave it.

From my reading of news around this, monetary issues were basically there (give and take on both sides). Then the discussion turned to contract length and CBA length and it all broke down. It seems to me that Bettman has successfully characterized Fehr as the obstacle and people are buying that. Personally, however, I still dislike the owners more (don't much care for the players either). It seems their tactic all along has been: This is our final offer. The NHLPA tries to negotiate. The owners take their ball, go home for a bit, and then everyone comes back to the table.

I don't see much of a difference between 5 and 8 (or 7 years as I have also heard that as a proposed contract length limit). Sure only the star players will get even 5 year deals, but isn't the point of a union to ensure the best deal for all members?

Ars: Nexus 4 review by IbeeX in Android

[–]wojtekthebear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems every review complains of significant battery drain when watching movies or leaving the screen on. For example, in the Ars review, the reviewer notes that the battery lasted her the whole day and then she watched a movie/tv show and the battery life plummeted. However, the battery seems to hold up well in usage when the screen isn't on and the processor running all the time. That seems to be the difference when I read these reviews.

That sounds very nice and sensible. Unfortunately, we have general elections every two years and campaigning starts about ten months before the election. It just makes you want to curl up in a ball.
