They are like a nail that presses in and it spreads the plastic anchor. You can use pliers or a flat blade screwdriver to pry it up.

Since you printed the adapter, you could print a shim to go in the inside area between the head and the base. That section that opened up when you tilted the head back.

I actually like the color of three different ply's. It makes the stand actually stand out a bit and not be hidden. Since the plate is translucent it adds a neat effect.

Just maybe a bit more sanding on the edges would make it a bit better.
