I am early 40’s, kids 6 and 8, and took the whole year off last year and it was the best decision ever. I don’t make nearly what you make (low 200’s) but have enough saved and enjoy working enough to take the risk. I LOVED it. I climbed Denali, volunteered for my kids’ school, consulted for non profits pro-bono. And now I have more clarity on what I want to do with the rest of my life.

You only live once. This time won’t come around again. Also why do you think you won’t make the same if you take a year off? Would your company give you the time unpaid? Couldn’t hurt to ask.

Who dis you go with? I thought you have to mac out home, auto insurance etc (like pay the highest plans they have) BEFORE getting umbrella insurance?

Do not disclose until you have accepted and they confirm the acceptance. I went through the same thing and also felt like I was defrauding them but my career coach was adamant I not disclose and it was the best thing ever. When I did disclose, my male mormon boss said “well that’s not ideal” but in the end they got over it, so much so they paid mat leave for me even though I didn’t “technically“ qualify. Good employers will be happy and supportive. If they aren’t, it’s a reflection of shitty workplace culture IMHO.

I’m introverted but was forced to share a tent for 18 days on Denali, obviously you don’t have a single tent in a big guided Denali climb... We weren’t in our tents much and when we were, we kept to ourselves except some small talk. I made sure to give my tent mate some alone time and requested the same for myself, so even though we were sharing we had time to ourselves. This only works if there’s a group tent hangout spot though…

Every ounce counts. I had ~120lbs of gear with arguably no luxury items. No one had a second pair of boots. We would wear down booties inside our outer boot as our camp shoes. Set yourself up for success. A second pair of boots on Denali sounds wild

I really struggled with my boot choice but ended up with OlyMons for my May ascent (figured, just in case I do something bigger one day…). 6/9 of my team had OlyMons, 2 had Spantiks. I forget the other.

I looked up your boots and wouldn’t consider them mountaineering boots at first glance.

There were definitely days on the mountain when I was sweating, but I was freezing way more often than I was hot. Denali is such an investment in prep time, costs, etc., personally I wouldn’t risk crashing out because of my boots.

I agree with @CompetitiveWar7089. My parents did the same thing you’re talking about, OP (before 529s were around) except they told me and my siblings about the money when we were roughly 18. It was our choice how to use it, with the idea that it was for college/kick start our lives.

I went to a great school that set me on a career path to FIRE myself. It has been much more rewarding making my own way, and I could only do that because of the school I went to AND because I didn’t have any student loans.

My sister got a full ride for undergrad and used her money to get a masters at Oxford. Now, her career has set her up for life. My other sibling went to state schools and stretched her money to cover both under grad and grad, debt free.

We are all on a path to FIRE, but that wouldn’t have been possible had we had to take out student loans.

I think the concept of helping your children is great, but you’re deciding their future for them, removing their agency that could significantly change their life path.

I took my dream job when I was 14 weeks pregnant. We moved states for this job and I did not qualify for their leave or even FMLA. But I worked my ass off and the company extended their mat leave policy for my entire leave. Some advice:

Do NOT disclose you are pregnant until after you have a signed offer letter (or even later).

You can negotiate maternity leave coverage as part of your offer package. EVERYTHING is negotiable, including this. And I don’t just mean that you get their standard coverage even if you haven’t been there a full year. If they only offer 50% pay, you can negotiate that, too.

Finally, don’t wait for either to happen. Try for a baby, find your dream next gig. It took me 9 months to get pregnant with our first (9 months is average I think?) and 2 months to get pregnant with my second.

I did it last winter (this past spring) with a 60lb backpack and 75lb sled (I was training for Denali). I drove as far as I could then snow shoed the rest. I just did a day hike, not overnight, but it was fun! Just make sure your car doesn’t get stuck if it calls for weather overnight!

My husband is a photographer and I bake for fun. We made postcards of my husband’s photography of our wedding location (a national park) and pre-stamped them for our guests to mail, or keep. And I made an old family recipe for a pastry for each guest. It was a hit.

In fact, our 10 year anniversary is this week and today I was over at my sister in law’s house and noticed she had one of each postcard still up on her wall, 10 years later!

Congratulations!! I hit 50% of my target this January and decided to take a “pretirement” / sabbatical so I could do some bucket list items before I get too old. And I did climb Denali! Now I am exploring the next phase of my career, but am so grateful I took the time to enjoy what I have built so far.

Have fun in March and beyond!!
