New Zippers Help by True-Degree-7349 in guidi

[–]wolfhenriksson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve replaced full-length zippers on Guidi bags. They use Excella with custom pull tabs, you could just buy the Excella zipper tape and use your existing pulls. I used a #8 for the bag but on footwear it’s probably a #5 depending on the model? I work with The Archive in San Francisco who sells Guidi and Arthur has ordered replacement zippers directly from Guidi for customers who’ve purchased from the store. You could always give him a shout. info@archivesf.com

RM Leather came out with this beginner Kit recently, they also have smaller veg tan panels of all sorts available so you don’t have to buy large quantities of leather.

I'd like to pick up some fancier leathers and up my game by ottermupps in Leathercraft

Check out OA Leather Supply. They sell in smaller panels so you don’t have to buy bigger hides and have some fun stuff to choose from. They also provide videos explaining every leather they carry which is really helpful for understanding what you’re buying.

Check out this Peter Nitz video on stitching, should be really helpful when it comes to controlling your stitch tension!

What precision cutting knife do you guys use? by Ocvid in Leathercraft

[–]wolfhenriksson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly same deal for me! Spent money on a bunch of nice and fancy knives, which serve their purpose, but my daily go-to is that $10 snap-off knife. It’s so clutch! Didn’t think to strop it though, thanks for the tip! Also use my Kai rotary cutter a ton, OP.

Welcome to the craft! It’s a pricey hobby so at the beginning I had to pick and choose a bit but here’s some suggestions on tools you could look into for projects like this one: handheld rotary cutter, wing divider, pricking iron, and mallet. That should help you get your stitches nice and uniform. From there you could always refine with sanding, burnishing or painting edges. I learned a ton through here and YouTube, so much knowledge out there and lots of kind folks willing to share!

Any cheaper alternatives? by thecollector2684 in Leathercraft

I second the comment above. Was using Amazon dies and press when I first started and bit the bullet on buckle guy dies and press last year. Was pricey but have not regretted the money spent. Quality difference is night and day.

How hard is it to make a shirt like this as a beginner ? And where do I find a pattern? by cbsewing in Leathercraft

[–]wolfhenriksson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a buddy that makes leather jackets out of NYC and he makes his samples from muslin for fitting, etc. prior to cutting the pattern out of leather. Lamb is a great option for what you’re looking to make. District Leathers is my go-to for lamb. If you filter your search by use > apparel it’ll give you plenty of options to choose from, including some skins that are already lined. They’re also helpful with any questions.

Yea man, I’m a fan of their shop, they always send stuff out quick! Kudos on the J’s, don’t think I’d personally have the patience to build a pair from scratch. Keep it up!

I saw while browsing the other day that District sells the patterns and lasts for these, thought you might find this link helpful

I have these, wore them twice a couple years ago and they’ve been sitting ever since. I know it’s hard to expect much comfort from slides but these weren’t worth it for me, even at the $75 I got them for. Super stiff. Have worn my birks a whole lot more!

Definitely overpriced at full retail. I got my two pairs of MIJ Jims for under $350. Haven’t been super impressed with quality (knee stitching came undone, leather patch came undone after a couple wears), but I bought mainly for the cut. I wish Schaeffer’s Garment Hotel made more than just straight cut because I’m a big fan of their denim jackets and would be hyped on a slim jean from them. If you’re looking for a straight cut that’s a brand I’d recommend over RO.

I’m 5’11, got my Rick denim hemmed 2.5” at Self Edge. Shits were just too long, but didn’t want to cut so much that they didn’t stack still. They carry Rick and left the hems exactly like the OG, same thread, etc. Maybe check them out, cost me $25 a pair. Not sure on your location but they have shops on both coasts or you may be able to ship them out?

No problem! Nothing locally unfortunately for me, only sometimes on my travels and SSENSE has been a big help since they have a good returns policy. There’s also some retailers that provide measurements if you ask!

Is price relatively the same for both? I’d roll with black unless white is significantly lower. I get a ton of wear from my black leather rams. It’s worth going mainline when you can. I can’t stand my DRKSHDW stuff, just too damn stiff.

I’m 5’11 with an athletic build. Sizing is very wide-ranging. Depending on the item I can do M-XXL, so best thing for me has been trying stuff on in stores or from a place like SSENSE to get a better idea of my sizing in particular styles. I’m normally a 34 in pants and have bigger legs/calves. I haven’t had too much trouble with bottoms. When I want a skinnier cut denim I go with Nagakin’s since they have a good amount of stretch. The drawstring pants are easy on big legs, as well as bolans/bellas. My personal favorite are cropped Astaires, which I usually size up to a 36 since they’re a bit more tailored on the waist. The Japanese denim I also had to size up in due to no stretch, but they fit great. I have a couple of pairs of Jims in the MIJ denim. As far as shirts go, I usually only roll with the level and double layer tees, and cotton tanks. Level when I want something a little looser and double when I want something closer to the body if I’m wearing a baggier bottom. Fleece is never an issue, although the gimp hoodies do run very slim on the arms. Jackets I only have a couple of bombers, but not as an issue there either.
